  • If I was that smart, I wouldn't be wasting time studying prime numbers. I'd be inventing stuff with new ideas.

  • the bruce lee of mathematics

  • What a sissy little girl. Picky indecisive little sissy. He has a vagina. it is scientifically proven that women are far more complicated than men are.

  • This guy has a 220 IQ.

  • Well , I hope that someone will MAKE CAPTIONS for this video , or I WILL...(in two languages if you want)

Because that's kind of annoying to listen when you're not a natural english speaker... ^_^

Also , this should be UCLA official channel , A PRESTIGIOUS INSTITUTE according to what "they say" about it...

  • "mumble mumble, mispronounce mispronounce, suck lips" He ought to learn how to present.

  • Why so many comments criticizing his public speaking skills? Who gives a shit? I care about the math he's talking about, not him, and so does he. It's his math genius that matters, not how he appears to a crowd. Does it make you guys feel better to find flaws in a brilliant person?

  • I like maths's but bloody hell it's boring.

  • @qwertypluss Proving Goldbach itself would not be of such significance to mathematics. It may aid in proving a few very similar theorems. The real reason everyone would be so excited if someone proved Goldbach would be because it's been an open problem for so long and everyone's tried it, it's most likely a solution will involve completely new mathematical techniques (as opposed to someone applying known techniques but perhaps in a clever way, as for most research in mathematics).

  • @qwertypluss It's the new techniques developed that really excite mathematicians. Once we have a new set of tools in our toolbox, we can start tackling many other problems. For example, Andrew Wiles proved Fermat's Last theorem about 15 years ago and became very famous for it. However, we really have had little use for Fermat's theorem. However, we have used his techniques to make progress on other important problems, such as the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.

  • "conjecture that every odd number bigger than 7 should be the sum of three primes"

    "what is big?"

    "10^1346"

"so theres a gap that people are still trying to fill"

i spat my drink all over my laptop when you said that, thank you so much!

  • I am extremely jealous of this man. I want his brains.

  • @qwertypluss lol don't be jealous, he's doing amazing things and he, himself, is an amazing man.

  • @JakeJohnRogers Jealousy in a good way through i.e I want to be like him

  • @qwertypluss However jealousy is usually thought of us bad, like you want to have his abilities and leave him without it. I just thought you meant something else, maybe envy would be a more mellifluous and pleasant word. :)

  • @qwertypluss Because it would be insulting to say he is only one brain. Lol xD

  • woww... Tao you are amazing :)

  • He is a mathematical genius, but he is not verbally fluent. He stammers and his voice quivers.

  • @scottvska he's just nervous

  • @scottvska i think his brain is too fast for his mouth

  • @scottvska - You are a 1st class idiot,.........his voice quivers, what???

  • @scottvska I think you'll find that many very intelligent people are socially awkward in this way.

  • @scottvska He isn't a professional public speaker, he's a mathematician and a genius. I wouldn't call him socially awkward like the other person who replied to you did, but what I would call him is not frequently speaking to the public or to large audiences. You could probably talk to him just fine if it was you and him, it would be like talking to a friend. Almost everyone will react differently when being watched by a crowd.

  • Asian........

  • @lauratwilight1 And what :/

  • Thumbs up if you looked at the length of the video and said ''fuck this shit!!'' and turned it off and went onto pornhub or sumtin

  • @leethemadmanshannon maybe someone looking for 30sec rodeo clips :)

  • Windows? honestly prof. Tao, I ever think that you was more a Slackware guy.

  • laaaaaaaawl introduction taken RIGHT from wikipedia, how ironic after all the universities tell us never to cite wikipedia...

  • @FIFAMAN07C3 The wikipedia entry post-dates this lecture, hence, it's the other way round. Whoever wrote the wikipedia entry took it from this.

  • @FIFAMAN07C3 how do you know he didn't write the bulk of the wiki on Tao?

  • @Baustrophedonic I dont. The real question is do I care... no... I just thought it was funny

  • So much respect to this guy, it's exhilirating to know that such a phenomonal mind exists in our lifetime. All the same, I have absolutely no idea what the dude is talking about. But that's part of the pleasure. To listen to a guy speaking eternal and absolute truths, and HE knows, HE sees, that very special and rarified world of beauty which is inaccessible to the rest of us. It's just a pleasure to watch him.

  • if you notice alot of smart people have big heads because their brains are filled with knowledge

  • This fucker needs to learn how to articulate, wow.

  • basic theories...

  • respect to Tao from Armenia. he is a great man.

  • damn...i'm too retard to understand all this...LOL

  • His brain works to quickly for his mouth..

  • @Khaos969 I was thinking that on the last video I saw lol

  • @Khaos969

and your mouth talks TOO fast for your brain (cause you could read and correct your error while you didn't , and 18 morons liked that !!! )

    I'm sorry...I had to... XD

  • @liadon666 im not sure u got my post... but im definately sure I dont understand yours.

  • FULLSCREEN PDF = "CTRL + L" :-)

  • i don't doubt hes genius , but i doubt i could understand his lectures in UCLA

  • Terence Tau is a ROCK STAR !!!!

  • omfg 5 stars for 1 h video

  • cutee

  • Does he breathe?? would be better if he slows down a bit

  • Zzzzzzzzzzzz Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Whoa, haven't snooze that well since I was 3 years old.

  • @raggabass shaaaduaaapp

  • ok, im in 8th grade advanced algebra classes. and this just hurts my brain by just looking at the symbols =_=

  • he's talking so fast

  • It seems that he clearly knows what he wants to say, but he does it so that it results in "Speaking a lot and telling very little.". He should've optimized his speech, but it was interesting, so maybe I'm being an ass who criticizes other people's grammar all the time without worrying about my own problems. <<- That's what I mean! I could've just wrote "..., but maybe it's just my imagination".

  • at 43:30 how could the primes possibly "conspire" in the case of a 1/2pi rotation? Every point visited is a different one in this case.

  • You may be right, but we cannot know for sure because the primes extend forever.

  • As Tao said "the primes are on a dense set" of the unit circle, therefore they cannot "conspire"

  • Yes Yes Yes , we all are dumber than Tao.,, Go Tao!!! Haters included.

  • Tao = The Way

  • Professor Tao :D

  • now, want makes him so good in math?

His brain of course, but HOW! :)

  • i know: (that additive prime structure is statistical in nature.. and multiplicative lends itself to proofs (clever insights) etc.)

that's why i have always felt the goldbach is statistical in nature. aka the amount of partitions of a # grows so quickly with N that the probability that one of them isn't dually prime gets so small so fast that all that has to hold are the first 100 or so before the chances of any futures not holding vanish faster than the chance over a large time can accumulate.

  • He seems to be very smart. I like him.

  • But he couldn't possibly be Bruce Lee! Bruce Lee was human...

  • Wow, I didn't know he fucked roosters. But I guess he's Bruce fucking Lee so he can do whatever he wants.

  • hell ya

  • i like this guy.. he's got a nice vibe to him..

  • i lol'd.

  • He looks like Bruce Lee! He would be master in MARTIAL MATH!!! LOL

  • he math talks real fast; i can't understand what the hell he's talking about. But then i'm not a math major

  • I've often felt that prime distributions are fractal; so, after finally found something about Terence Tao's work(I've been trying to read up on the mathematical activity of the twentieth century where there hasn't really been an E.T. Bell to sum everything up including the philosophy and history of everything; so, i'be been reading lots of fields medalists and the solvers of Hilbert's problems), I feel like my hunch is stronger now(the primes are more about dynamcal systems than not).

  • he speaks math = fast 'n short. I can't understand . if I could I'd solve his problems ..

  • that sucks man. who would have thought the only thing separating you from solving high level math problems was the english language.

  • i was joking but if economics equation includes words and they talk rather usual, math uses minimalistic - symbols -approach. much like fortran vs cobol . and ofc non-understanding shows in the formulation of the question itself, right ?

  • obviously, ass (and i too was joking). and don't throw around low-level programming as if that means anything.

  • tommy1729 proved RH

  • he'd be awesome at blackjack!

  • doesn't acrobat reader let you show something full screen?

  • genius, respect..

  • Tao is a Mozart of matehematics. A fantastic genius!!

  • Why do people say Mozart Mozart? There are peopole who made beautiful music all the time.

  • Are you familiar with his work or just parotting what you heard?

  • I looked up nilsequences and couldnt find anything. what is the basic definition?

  • It's "You ARE a worthless failure".

    Fail much?

  • well everything ypou think and dream don't work. The difference between a mathematician and a normal man is that Mathematicians only think of things that work most of the time.

  • Hey GLP44,

First of all, I was hoping my sarcasm would be clearer.... I can see it wasn't. Secondly, I don't understand your comment in the sense that we now know there ARE infinite arithmetic progressions in the primes - thoughts and dreams are the same - Tao just wasn't (yet) able to teach us how to construct them.

  • sorry I wasn't familiar with what you said, I don't know any thing about prime numbers, I thought you said your dream got shattered. and that happens. There are people like Euler and this guy who have a number of theories and there are ones who have just one. and there are ones who got none. Mathematics can be a real heart breaker.
