You're exactly right Michelle. Maureen is dead because Ed followed his father's example of alcoholism and affairs. If he could have stayed true to Maureen or even been able to honor her request to give her some space when she begged him to Maureen would still be there. This is one of those times when Ross' ruthlessness shows. He grows a lot as a character, but anyone would make a mistake to think he'd turned into Mr. Rogers. The shark of the lawyer he was when he was introduced is still there.
