The old timers aren't praised too much at all (with exception of maybe Elvis). Bobby Darin was not the first singer to perform this song but he was definitely the best. I know 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui' was about Hitler when he CAME to power. Brecht wrote the 'Threepenny Opera' as a sort of wake up call to Hitlers apparent rise and seeking to rise to power and acceptability in a similar way as Mack the Knife did. Brecht was an absolute anti fascist and saw his writings as part of the struggle against that - in fact he was number 2 on Hitlers death list.
