I agree with Santino, this song is more spectacular than Mellon Coll & the Infinite Sadness. Someone posted that the chief instrument is a mellotron, which has a really brawny sound.
I think Bob Dylan used a mellotron on Knocking on Heaven's Door--the movie soundtrack version from Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. I wonder did it inspire "The Infinite Sadness"? It seems to me there are similarities, but it's no ripoff.
Personally I think this would've been a much more killer intro to the mellon collie album than the one thats on there, I mean it's alright but this is much more spectacular in my opinion.
@pablorubiolugo My favorite 1990s albums are Smashing Pumpkins's, Melancholy And The Infinite Sadness, Smashing Pumpkins's, Siamese Dream, R.E.M. Automatic For The People, R.E.M. Document, Radiohead's, Okay Computer, and Red Hot Chili Peppers,'s Californication. Best albums of the 2000s Smashing Pumpkins's, Machina: The Machines Of God, Poets Of The Fall's, Signs Of Life, Cage The Elephant's, Cage The Elephant, and Smashing Pumpkins's, EP American Gothic
Dieses Lied erschien (nur)auf der 3-LP Sonderversion von Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness als letzter Track!!!Smashing Pumpkins are the best band (for)ever!!!!
@Bringourdoomsday666 Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the first track on the Smashing Pumpkins third album, also called "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" it's up on Youtube and on iTunes.
@DRUMMERLORD95 Actually, it is. Not the CD version, but the vinyl edition. And I think this sounds more like a demo, indicating why it wouldn't really have been placed on the album. Also, space constraints might have held them back.
@VelvetPunk4life space constraints? lol the album is like 28 songs long or something ridiculous like that. i dont think 3 more minutes woulda broke the bank. but you probably are right, it does sound like a demo
@demonpeak Hmm...thinking about it again, you're right. Space mighta not been the reason. CD's can hold approx. 80 mins of music/sound on a disc. It might have felt out of place to Billy Corgan. Who knows? You'd have to ask the guy or anyone who worked on the album to really know.
I used to play this chord progression on my guitar a lot but never knew where it came from, now I do. Thank you for making me remember a heartfelt instrumental : )
I made a mistake with my comparison of Knockin on heaven's door with Infinite Sadness. The comparison should have veen with the "Final Theme" of Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid.
The two have some similarity, in the cadence and melody and drums, I think.
I really like this song. I was just listening to Bob Dylan's " Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid:" version of Knocking on Heaven's Door.
I had never noticed, but there are some similar sounds in the two songs. This is not a ripoff of Dylan at all, but has anyone else noticed the echoes from "Knockin" which crop up in "infinite Sadness".
It's not real noticeable, and likely only audible in the soundtrack album or Dylan's original album, not at all live performance,
Yep, this song utilizes the amazing Mellotron! This is the same thing you hear on Spaceboy... It's basically a piano that plays loops of tape, so you can play it like an orchestra, but it has a very unique sound. I love this song so much! Long live the Mighty SP!
This from the Mashed Potatoes box set disc 5. It is fucking amazing download it, I urgue you! They are the greatest band of all time, love you all xxx and keep the pumpkins alive!
@cgnetwork1 This is the only song included on MP that I've seen on the site; I know that this and at least one other track are available on the "Rarities and B-Sides" collection on iTunes.
One of the guys who received the original set posted 18 of the songs online, and they've been circulating ever since, but the audio's supposed to be low-quality.
oh ya? every album? then you'd know it's also on the vinyl of MCIS. sweet lyphe brah so heady. nice of you to put it up on youtube too since you have it. dooooooooooooosh.
:D Yay! thanks 4 posting this song-it's awesome. Ah-sorry if i asked u this question before, but what's the font U used at the very beginning? It's the exact same thing as that on Melon Collie's cover.
Because Infinite Sadness is actually an outtake for Siamese Dream. It is on the record though of Mellon Collie. It might be because of time restraints, I honestly wouldn't know!

@Watch4 Where could I get a copy of Mashed Potatoes?
cgnetwork1 1 year ago
@cgnetwork1 You can't; it was personally given by Billy to the rest of the band and very few other people.
Supposedly, somebody stole D'Arcy's set back in the '90s, and a couple of the discs haven't been recovered yet.
