Right up there with Ronaldinho and Mike Tyson in showing potential of being the best ever at what they are doing but can´t keep it up for long enough.
I wish he could come back but I think it's too late. His prime years are gone, and he was 1 of the couple players who could smash Federer at his best.
What makes this backhand so good is the fact that he drops his wrists and then snaps them through the ball but still driving the racquet forward. It takes a great talent for timing to do this well.
In terms of style and straight up technique Nalbandian and Safin's backhands are the best in the two handed category, you can add Murray to it. Nadal's has improved massively in the last 12 months.
I think that is true but I also believe people are underestimating Nikolay Davydenko's backhand...he was owning Federer at the '07 French open with it.
He's amazing, no doubt, but tennis is a lot more than having picture-perfect strokes (like nalbandian)... He has to contend with some of the greatest players of all time.
he went to the semis at least of all four grand slams which means he is versatile and has talent, but he doesn't give his best which is why he hasn't won a slam. If he did then he would have already won 5 slams probably and be up there with nadal and federer
And if he would have more dedication. He also has to work on his fitness a lot. I mean, he is just not putting enough effort in it to compete with the top consistently. Nalbandian is such a wasted talent.
you have to be pretty dedicated to be a top 15 ranked player. hes ranked 14 currently. maybe he has a few things to change, but at his level of play its hard to get a lot better because the guys are just so good.
that's true, here in argentina all the sport journalists talk about that, but he is training to be in form for came back to the atp tour, in december he will play a mini tournament in argentina with safin, gonzalez and more good tennis players :D
just went to a tennis camp with division 1 players and i swear there was this player who could crush his backhand. I think he might have the strongest backhand ever.
There's actually no comparison between Nalbandian and Agassi when it comes to the backhand. The answer is simple, Nalbandian's is much better IN TERMS OF TECHNIQUE, even considering the fact that Agassi have one of the best in the game. Note that the spectacular aspect of Agassi's game was based on his super timing, but not technique. Nalbandian's backhand can handle all sorts of shots, and that includes neutralizing top spins way above his shoulders.
Federers backhand actually lost him the epic final at wimbledon on sunday. Of course he can hit winners with it, wouldnt be 12 slam winner if he couldnt....nevetheless it wasnt good enough..and i so wanted him to win!
Fed's bh did not cost him the wimby final. if he had a 2hbh he get less reach, can't come to the net as well, can't recover as well for the next shot, etc. it's the fact that he couldn't take advantage of the 12 break chances he had in the 1st set that cost him. people berate his 1hbh with a sense of illusion that if he had a 2hbh, it will be a combo of all that's good with 1hbh and 2hbh, but not realizing having a 2hbh will introduce 2hbh weakneses as well.
I never said that he needed to change to a 2hbh, just increase the reliability of his 1hbh! I was agreeing with bernhardlanger below that federers backhand is weak at times, shown last sunday. Watch the game and you will see how Nadal exploits this all way through the match
i'm still kind of in shock over his loss. roger's ego is getting in the way of his playing against rafa. he doesn't run around his backhand as much, he tries to go backhand to forehand with Nadal in rallies....he lets Nadal serve to his BH ever. single. time. on the ad side. nadal's speed obviously could make anybody nervous and I think that's what's happening with Federer. Come on Roger....let's get it together.

Best two handed-backhand in the world! perfect from head to feet, his head and eyes on ball like Federer, his shoulders transfer, look at his hip how he uses it as he hits the ball. His leading arm is the left one, as it should be, not like many pro that use the right too much. Finally he hits it up front, with both hands away from the body... What else can we ask? Beautiful to see !
Is that so? can gasquet flick it cross court like roger with his wrist? can he slice like roger?,roger can hit winners on his backhand just as much as richard can! you obviously don´t see things with a clinical eye! roger´s backhand is sensational..
what are you talking about?? feds backhand is a liability most of the times. of course he can hit winners, but it's often very shaky and breaks under pressure, especially on clay. his worst shot by far.
you´re comparing it to his forehand I think, but that doesn´t mean his backhand isn´t great, because I have seen him killing it with his backhand many times..as far as him playing under pressure on clay,i.e,you must mean playing rafa..I can´t really say,all I know is roger has all the shots in the book..
He destroyed nadal using his backhands in 2007.
