I think religion itself is not the problem, because the messages taught in religions are generally good and helpful to humanity (e.g. eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth - etc); moreover, the same holds true with political systems - they were all created with a sincere attempt to make the world a better place. Money/Greed/Power, however, mix like oil & water with religion & politics - unfortunately, humans have a HARD time managing this problematic trio.

Religion is a mass opinion - sure they can be classed as a whole, but each have their own take on the matter (Hence, extremists) - you can't stop people from having their own opinions.

religion has more than one appeal. one is the sense of belonging which is like love. also what arises from participating in faith-based peaceful culture, forgiveness and help.
opinions should be collaborative, and kind of are. some people are less suceptible to change than others, that doesn't mean you shouldn't argue or rant or try.
it's wrong to think that religion begets her examples of negativity though. religion can be good, just should be more carefully interpretted by the believer.
