Any rocket with malfuctioning stearing vanes locked in a hard left or right position would make it go like this until it ran out of fuel.
A crop duster with the same problem could do the same over dozen of miles but on a horizional plane. It was lucky there was no real winds aloft that night. Would have spoiled the pretty affect in the sky.
