Does anyone notice that Steve Perry was actually the inspiration for the "running man?" Check out dance @ 1:58 in front of Smith's drums...awesome!!! I can remember when this was on MTV...it was their first live concert...and I watched it. However, I had already seen it as I was at the Carrier Dome in October '81 almost a month before they did this show. At the time, the Syracuse Carrier Dome show was the largest indoor concert in the Northeast...October 9, 1981....about 20,000 fans
They should have called the band by a different name. Without Perry, there is NO Journey...just a cover band with a sound-alike kid from the Philippines. Or, they just disbanded completely. I saw them live three times in the 80's. I wouldn't waste my money on them today at all.
Escape was the soundtrack to my youth.....one of the BEST all time albums ever...."im ok, i'm alright, feeling good out on your own" I LOVE STEVE PERRY
for all you Lady GaGa bashers out there, she is a HUGE rock fan! She just had Brian May of Queen play onstage with her at the VMAs. Her name Lady GaGa came from Queens hit "Radio GaGa" Shes a huge KISS fan and has been seen at they're concerts! Also shes a Beatle fan! She writes all her own shit and is creative in her own right and that is why she will stay. Im a fan of all types of music, Rock being my favorite and the Rockers of yesterday all love her. She will keep coming back and back!
@spender00 Lady gaga is amazing! I'm amazed more people don't see it. they've been asking for a change. we got it with gaga (who will continue to write amazing songs) she reminds me of RATT for some reason :P
@tedisakoolkat They dont see it cuz of the type of music she plays, they should look closer. U watch as the years go by, she will lose all the kiddy fanbase she has now, but will gain more respect as her music matures. If shes a fan of Beatles, Queen, Kiss, M.J, etc, then she will most likely change along with her music. I remember a lot of Beatle fans were pissed cause she visited Yoko Ono, they let her play Johns piano and they had a pic of it on the net, but I think John would welcome her!
@DestinationTruthTV There is something about that man (Steve Perry) that makes him so SEXY AND HOT, he just looks good any way he dresses, especially no shirt, his HAIR no matter what style and HIS VOICE IS SO, WELL NO WORDS TO EXPLAIN.... :)
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Journey's "Escape" album, which rocketed Journey to superstardom on the wings of timeless ballads "Don't Stop Believin'", "Open Arms", "Mother Father", and rockers "Stone in Love", "Escape". Fueled by Steve Perry's effortless, soaring vocals, Neil Schon's burning leads, and Jonathan Cain's beautiful keyboards, with "Escape", Journey's transformation was fully realized and the magic of the music has stood the test of time after all these years!!
talkin about someone oozing with talent and sexaulity steve perry is your man. Not since elvis has their been so much made over a mans good looks and vocals
yoyocheckit8, my oldies - Journey, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy etc, are still selling out the largest arenas in the world. Let's see where LOG is when their 30th anniversary rolls around. They would be doing well to sell out the local House of Blues. BTW, I like some of their songs. I like Godsmack too.
SP in someway made journey like is today!22.01 man this man born on day like me,and im 18 and i go to be a singer like SPi sing all my life and i sing steve almost like him :P
I don't let my girlfriend watch this show . I am scared she will notice Perry's impressive package and make me feel less of a man than I really am . sad but true!
Today(5/28/2011) I bought the Journey Escape vinyl album for 43$ since it was an import of a Japaneese print, sold to me at some record store on the street.Really wanted it since they`re a great band and Greyson Chance had a copy as seen on the YouTube vid of Greyson Chance on the tour bus.I also made an amature YouTube vid tittled "Journey Escape-vinyl album from Japan, video by Alan Piper." Also getting ready to see them here in Denver with Foreigner & Night Ranger this October 2011.Cant wait!!
Journey is Awesome, I seen them live three times. But you are right, only Steve, Steve, and don't forget Neal Schon, RossVallory and of Course the great GREG ROLIE!!!!! To me they ain't Journey no more. You can't replace any of these guys and have the same great music!
This song ROCKS and it also is the song Greyson Chance listens to before he does his shows, I can see why too because it`s so full of energy and the lyric says "They won`t take me, they won`t break me" whitch is great words of encouragement for anyone in life.
i swear to god im a hippie so i lisent to lots of music but ik zero songs from today and i have to say journey is the greatest band ever ik all there songs and im just 15 i practilty have a stand to worship steve perry JOURNEY !
Steve...Freakin'...Perry.....what can one say??? What a voice. It's a shame that a motorcycle accident can ruin a voice like this :( I miss this line up of stars. Thanks for posting this.
@steverid no accident.....hip replacement surgery from hiking in Hawaii....and that did not ruin his voice, he's 62 years old and knows when to move on. He's not like these die hards that just don't know when to stop, and start mentoring others and helping others become all they can be! Bless Steve Perry....#1 always!!!
@NoSteveNoPoint sorry dude.....my bad......I read it somewhere a few years ago & obviously it wasn't correct. In any event, I miss the dude singing. He was awesome!
@Mysterwright. You are so RIGHT! God knows that the work and talent that goes into a band like Journey (Steve Perry) is not the sterotypicala boy band!
See it pisses me off that songs like this were amazing but not all that popular but songs like I'll never say never are fucking every where and Justin beiber makes a movie of his tour and it's huge you want to see a show buy this DVD journey live in Houston
@Yallusernamestaken The key thing that cokehead suits don't get about bands like Journey is that they had been playing since the early 70's before becoming incredibly huge in the early 80's. They made it through the ranks of being signed past 3 records. They were immortal long before this album. Jerks try and pass off Bieber like he's been here as long and it doesn't wash. He hasn't paid his dues for one and for two its the studios doing all the talking. Kinda like rock star, he's just a singer.
Just a good song performed extremely well. steves the best. thank god no hate on this site. live and let live, whoever you prefer - really you ken, its a short life!
They used to play this at a rollerskate rink when I was 14. We would start racing like mad when this song came on, passing eachother at incredible speeds...such a great rush.
Wow! never got the opportunity to see this as these lads seldom toured in the uk. just wished id got into some debt and flew to the states! i hope you lucky people over there realise just how fortunate you all were to see this. how i envy you all! Good for you though.
Yeah, why aren't they in the Hall of Fame instead of some of the underperformers they want to feature! @Madman007! Never tire of listening to Perry, be he with Journey or solo. He has a song for my every mood, every aspect of my life. He soothes, excites, motivates-and always with that amazing talent. Put out that new music you keep hinting about Mr. P-the world needs more of it!
I love the composition of this song, and this is a tremendous version. sometimes overlooked and underated because it is a very good song overshaddowed by several GREAT songs on the escape album. think about it- how good is this album? simply stunning.
I love the composition of this song, and this is a tremendous version. sometimes overlooked and underated because it is a very good song overshaddowed by several GREAT songs on the escape album. think about it- how good is this album? simply stunning.
I'm mad at myself I could have went to the frontiers tour and I passed cause I thought Journey was too commercial back then...little did I know I would be doing a Journey tribute 8 years later...lol
Awesome song! It makes me think of the movie Tron, because this was the soundtrack for that movie. and only Perry can pull off the tenure coat, he's just B,A.
You can have all of the cover bands in the world, all the sound-alikes on the planet. But only Journey, the true journey with Steve Perry and Steve Smith, can pull it off. Perfection.
@Guitarbuddies8698 YES!!!! Perfection is right! Steve Perry, Steve Smith are great arent' they :) Nothing tops Steves Voice. Arnel certainly has good pipes, but does not have the Beauty of a Song in Writing, Creating, his stance on stage, all of these things cannot be copied, either you have it or Not. Steve has It and that never goes away. He maybe back soon to perform again for the world. hope so, a fan for ever.
They had a great line up during this time. A world class guitar player and drummer. Neal Schon and Steve Smith are players! I saw this tour in Charlotte in Sept. 1981. Two weeks before I saw this show, I saw Van Halen on their Fair Warning tour. Arena rock in the 80's! You kids of today really missed out!! Haha! Now go listen to Lady GaGa!
@RATSALAD9 I was around 15 at this time and I do remember several reviews here stating their musicianship to be excellent but saying the music as generic, calculated thing for marketing masses. They were also derisively lumped to AOR along Boston, Night Ranger, Styx and Supertramp. Punk and new wave were still relatively fresh here with bands like The Police, Jam etc. Journey wasn't considered to be enough hard rock or having something to say.
I was 14 that year and I never got to see that line-up(or any to date). Back when vinyl was the only format, I had all of their albums, all the way back to the first album(Look Into The Future; 1975)
I was 14 during the Escape Tour. But I never had a chance to see this line-up. This is the best Journey line-up. Every other line-up pales in comparison. Ansley Dunbar is good drummer, but not as good as Steve Smith.
@RATSALAD9 I'm a kid today, and fuck you Lady GaGa couldn't even suck my dick, I wouldn't let her. I listen to Journey, Van Halen, all the good music. We did miss out. Fuck music today.
@t3hPoundcake I agree. Lady GaGa blows dead bears. It's too bad stupid television series like American Idol keep trying to control music and tell kids what they should like. Brain dead bullshit.
You're right, my young friend. Dude Gaga is not even worthy to sniff Perry's jock! You can tell great music because 30 years later, it STILL sounds great!
@t3hPoundcake Lady Gaga listens to both Journey and Van Halen from what I can recall. Not a fan of hers but she's not exactly the worst pop music has to offer, dude. I agree with your sentiment though.
@RATSALAD9 well we have muse, foo fighters and my chemical romance. so its almost like it was back then, but a bit different. I am 22 and I feel so sad that wasn't 22 1980... would have been awesome, that is for sure.
@BangTango , Hey man, don't feel sad that you weren't 22 back in 1980. If you were you would be past 50 now. I am 48 and would love to be 22 again! Those were fun times though. I just wish that we had video capability then that we do now. I mean, look at all of van halens early tours, there is very little footage of those shows. Other bands too. Arena rock back then was so much fun. Hair bands baby!
@RATSALAD9 i dont know about that. today we got Lamb Of God, Unearth, Godsmack, Rob Zombie, etc. maybe its you who's missing out. now go listen to your oldies
Neil Schon never gets enough credit for his guitar work. I am not a huge Journey fan (too many ballads) but this is a great song and it looks like they are at their peak here. Love the shirt there Jon Cain...lol.
Even if you don't like Steve Perry, you can't honestly say he sucks. I mean c'mon. You obviously searched for and watched the video for some reason... jerk.
@StevePerrySucks You SUCK.Anyone that would have a user name like you needs to get a life.Go listen to Arnel, who you think is great and all he is doing is copying STEVES voice.
beanierene I totally agree with you. Arnel is just trying to imitate Steve Perry but he cannot because there is no one with a singing voice like Steve's. He really made Journey what it was. No one can really replace him as lead singer in my opinion.
Journey isn't in the hall of fame yet? Damn man. Off the top of my head, another band that isn't is Chicago, last I heard anyway. Makes you wonder how two bands with so much history and so many hits hasn't been given the award... hmmmmm
Wow ... they just don't write 'em like that anymore. And Steve Smith is hands-down one of the all-time great rock drummers. It's really too bad Perry had later vocal problems. This was an amazing lineup.
Does anyone notice that Steve Perry was actually the inspiration for the "running man?" Check out dance @ 1:58 in front of Smith's drums...awesome!!! I can remember when this was on MTV...it was their first live concert...and I watched it. Awesome song! It makes me think of the movie Tron, because this was the soundtrack for that movie. and only Perry can pull off the tenure coat, he's just B,A.

One of my all time Journey faves. The whole band is simply amazing. Steve Smith is a fvcking monster!
ejstrayer 1 year ago
You can have all of the cover bands in the world, all the sound-alikes on the planet. But only Journey, the true journey with Steve Perry and Steve Smith, can pull it off. Perfection.
Guitarbuddies8698 1 year ago 28
@Guitarbuddies8698 I agree 100% there is no Journey without those two!
crushfan76 1 year ago

RATSALAD9 1 year ago 59
@RATSALAD9 I was around 15 at this time and I do remember several reviews here stating their musicianship to be excellent but saying the music as generic, calculated thing for marketing masses. They were also derisively lumped to AOR along Boston, Night Ranger, Styx and Supertramp. Punk and new wave were still relatively fresh here with bands like The Police, Jam etc. Journey wasn't considered to be enough hard rock or having something to say.
konked 1 year ago
I was 14 that year and I never got to see that line-up(or any to date). Back when vinyl was the only format, I had all of their albums, all the way back to the first album(Look Into The Future; 1975)
Chris05161967 1 year ago
I was 14 during the Escape Tour. But I never had a chance to see this line-up. This is the best Journey line-up. Every other line-up pales in comparison. Ansley Dunbar is good drummer, but not as good as Steve Smith.

@RATSALAD9 Yup I saw this tour too! Incredible!

@RATSALAD9 I'm a kid today, and fuck you Lady GaGa couldn't even suck my dick, I wouldn't let her. I listen to Journey, Van Halen, all the good music. We did miss out. Fuck music today.

thundermattz 6 months ago
@t3hPoundcake I agree. Lady GaGa blows dead bears. It's too bad stupid television series like American Idol keep trying to control music and tell kids what they should like. Brain dead bullshit.

@t3hPoundcake TRUE i hate pop music this stuf rocks
TheRailFanBoy780 5 months ago
You're right, my young friend. Dude Gaga is not even worthy to sniff Perry's jock! You can tell great music because 30 years later, it STILL sounds great!
DemocracyDoctor1 4 months ago 5
@t3hPoundcake you didn't miss out. It's still alive. As long as you're loving it, it will never die.
seanlheeger 3 months ago
@t3hPoundcake Lady Gaga listens to both Journey and Van Halen from what I can recall. Not a fan of hers but she's not exactly the worst pop music has to offer, dude. I agree with your sentiment though.

@RATSALAD9 well we have muse, foo fighters and my chemical romance. so its almost like it was back then, but a bit different. I am 22 and I feel so sad that wasn't 22 1980... would have been awesome, that is for sure.
BangTango 9 months ago
@BangTango , Hey man, don't feel sad that you weren't 22 back in 1980. If you were you would be past 50 now. I am 48 and would love to be 22 again! Those were fun times though. I just wish that we had video capability then that we do now. I mean, look at all of van halens early tours, there is very little footage of those shows. Other bands too. Arena rock back then was so much fun. Hair bands baby!
RATSALAD9 8 months ago
@RATSALAD9 i dont know about that. today we got Lamb Of God, Unearth, Godsmack, Rob Zombie, etc. maybe its you who's missing out. now go listen to your oldies

Neil Schon never gets enough credit for his guitar work. I am not a huge Journey fan (too many ballads) but this is a great song and it looks like they are at their peak here. Love the shirt there Jon Cain...lol.

@StevePerrySucks You SUCK.Anyone that would have a user name like you needs to get a life.Go listen to Arnel, who you think is great and all he is doing is copying STEVES voice.
beanierene 1 year ago 4
beanierene I totally agree with you.
