Hey, does anyone know how the hf s10 compares to the new hf m31, and they are both being offered for 800 now. I would think that the hf s10 would still be better, but the new one has a touch screen *dono if i would care though
I just played with mine - and found that I can do the focus shift manually (and VERY easily !!) using the joystick next to the lcd display on the open out flap
I just let the autofocus hunt for it. By that, I mean I will let the camera focus on something at a signifigantly different distance and then center up on the new subject, and the camera will slowly bring it into focus. If you look at the vid of my florida trip, at the 5:55 and 6:35 points there are a couple of other examples that you can kinda see a better idea of what I'm doing.
I'd love to, but my vegas keeps crashing when I try to render 1080. My computer has good specs, it's some sort of software problem. I had almost given up on the hope of being able to render 1080, but I have a few new ideas for render settings to try to see if it will go. Are you guys using vegas to render 1080?
Yep, I've been trying to use Sony AVC in mp4 because people said sony avc was really good, and youtube recommended mp4 format. It's worked great in 720p, just not 1080. I can't try main concept mp4 because my version of vegas (movie studio platinum) doesn't give me hd resolution or custom options for the main concept one. I'm rendering and uploading a few different experiments at the moment. I guess we'll see if any of them pan out. The uncompressed quicktime is looking good so far.
@TheCouchCrusader - Sony Vegas is good but I'd use Adobe After Effects or Premier to edit then render. I'd also render in Quicktime Animation format, then from there convert it into the format you need using Toast or Adobe Media Encoder. I'm looking to buy this camera and have found your videos most useful, thanks! :]
Gab - if you recorded in mx mode -you have to render / burn that footage at - (( 24 )) bit rate 1080 60i if you have recorded in fx mode you have to change bit rate to (( 17 )) then 1080 60i.. FX is mainly for dvd MX is mainly meant for blu-ray dude.. Any technical issues you may have always ask Cannon - 1800 OK CANNO - they are the best and can answer every single question you need answered !
Love the detail this thing catches. When I'm playing with it I end up becoming fascinated by mundane things like cracks in the sidewalk or textures on the trees. Heh.
I agree. I wish they looked as clear on youtube. Even in youtube HD, they don't look nearly as clear as the raw files. Amazing details these little canon cameras can capture.
Scenery changes to a more urban setting around 3:50 if you're tired of the nature stuff. I kinda like the urban shots better, wish I would have done a few more.
how did u shoot at 60i? mine only lets u select frame rates of 50i or PF25....should i be looking somewhere else as i cannot find 60i anywhere in the menus or manual
You have the PAL version (which is the standard in Australia where you're profile says you're from) (As well as Europe and some other reigons) Mine is an NTSC version which is common for North American Televisions. PAL version does 25 and 50 frames, NTSC version does 24, 30, and 60 frames. There's probably a negligable difference between 50 and 60 frames though in all reality. Hope that helps.
Yes, it can produce some VERY sharp stuff. I wish I had some tripod mounted footage to put up. And it also looks a whole lot better on my computer than what youtube converts to and display's at.
Funny, between editing and rendering, I bet I've watched this vid 20 something times and never noticed that was a lube shop. Shows how much attention I pay I guess. I was more focused on the guy on the roof because he kinda reminded me of the rocket in austin powers.
Thanks. I use Sony Vegas, but I'm on a PC. If you're using a Mac, then Final Cut seems to be the software of choice for most people. If you're using serious software like FCP, Vegas, or Premiere, it shouldn't make a difference what camera you use. You might double check that your version of FCP supports AVCHD and the .m2ts file format if you're considering using the HF S100, or pretty much any of the new canon high def's.
what editing software did you use? I'm in the market for a tapeless camera, though I edit on Final Cut Pro and I'm not sure what camera would work the best. Did you use Final Cut? great video by the way!
Krikey, look how vibrant the colors came out! Exceptional quality to say the least. What did you mean by "fast motion still seems a little flickery"? I'm looking to upgrade my camera to capture skaters so a fast AF is a must as well.
Yep, I was very impressed with the colors, especially since it's not a 3-chip. The flicker I noticed is in the fast sweeps mainly in the begenning between seconds 0:10 & 0:20, however, I think I got the export thing figured out because my newest video has a lot of motion in it and no flicker. Part of it may have also been attributable to shooting in 24p instead of 60i (which is better for motion) Check out the new one if you want.
Thanks. I just returned from a vacation to florida yesterday and got a lot of new footage. I've only been able to sort through about a third of the footage so far. I havn't changed any of the colors yet. Hopefully it will be through uploading tomorrow. If you're interested in the HF S100, check it. The stuff I plan to upload next from a show at seaworld is just absolutely killer. I felt a little guilty about the price when I bought this camera, but definately not now. A very amazing camera.
Nice, where did you film it?

Btw, what song did you use for this video?
AlchemyOfSin 2 years ago
I'd look at the HF S200's now, they are the new and improved sibling.
Songs: by Badly Drawn Boy. The first song is "Minor Incident" and the second is "This is that new song"

WOW! I didn't even know that. God I love youtube! : )

GREAT video
How the heck you doing the depth of field/focus shifts ?
The dial on the camera is way too small and needs too much turning for me to get that effect ?

@TheCouchCrusader
What codec are you trying to render in? Because sometimes AVC mp4. screws up. Try a simple Mainconcept MP4. at constant 24mbps.

phatphob6921 2 years ago
Used Sony Vegas 9 to edit, exported as an .mp4 using the "Sony AVC" as the save type. All options put to their highest respective settings.
