I think if he would have pushed he would have ascended. However he remains ssj. I like the trunks from regular dbz he was an ascended saiyan in the cell games. If he trained he would have reached ssj2 without much problem.

In my opinion, I think both Vegeta and Trunks went SSJ2 when they exited the time chamber, because all it is, really, is about twice as strong as SSJ1. And thats what they did when they powered up, they are twice as strong as they were in SSJ. the only reason why they had ''bulky' muscles was because they were not used to the form. Its new to them. Everyone was already SSJ2. Only Gohan mastered it because of his hidden powers.

Not to mention, its explained more than once that SSJ2 is the same as 'ascended saiyan.' When Goku and Vegeta were fighting eachother in the Buu saga, Gohan was explaining how they were both 'ascended' even though they were both SSJ2. And when Goku performed SSJ3 to Buu, he referred to ascended saiyan as SSJ2. So to add to my last comment, this confirms it. People say this was a dub error but its not

If SSJ2 was lets say x4 or x5 that of a SSJ then maybe Ascended would make a little more sense to me, but as of now it doesn't...... Ascended did pretty much make both of them twice as strong so i don't know what to make of anything. If their powers were only multiplied by like 1.4x or 1.5x, their SSJ1 power would already be matching Imperfect Cell's and they wouldn't need to ascend at all, so again nothing makes sense, unless we can get Toriyama to speak
