Did yours run when you got it? When i got mine, it had a snapped connecting rod so i scrapped the engine and put a junk briggs on so i can still use it.
when i got it it was sitting for at least 10 years. i worked on it like crazy until i finally got it to run. had alot of carb problems for a long time. just needed to be cleanout really well, but i couldn't get it apart without destroying the gasket.
Then it started knocking bad, and smoking bad toward the end. then i just couldn't get it to start the one day. Loved the engine though. that tall cast iron 15 hp briggs had some serious torque
Yep, still got the Sears Suburban 15. Engine problems though. Especially carb problems :) It was free though! and we got alot of awesome use out of that thing. can't complain
Yeah that;s just the exact shit I need......I'l take either or both....except shipping a 100 pounds engine across the states would be a bit expensive.....Just pull an ignition system off of one, solid state, put it in a box, and ship it!!! :) how much do you want for it??? I knew bolens used those damn tecumsehs.....
yeah I still need that thing. I ended up pulling the tecumseh out of that sears and throwing in an old briggs 11 horse off a go kart. it didn't work that well. so eventually yeah I still need that thing to get the hh120 going.
is that be the 15 hp sears suburban??? I need a coil for mine. it's a 12 though, a tecumseh hh120. I thinks bolens used that engine a little bit. damn I want to get that thing going but i dont know where to get that goddamn coil.?!!.?.....,,
haha, :) you trying to ask if i have one to sell? I actually have a 12HP tecumseh with spark off of a bolens 1220. and possibly another horribly smokey tecumseh.
right, gotcha. so "browny" isn't a brand name then? its just means when you use one trans before another?
what i'm wondering is if the 5 speed transmission is an over drive transmission. 4 speeds in cars are pretty much always 1 to 1 rpm from the input shaft to the out put shaft, when they are in 4'th. 1-3 are reduction gears. in most or all 5 speeds, 1-3 are reduction, 4'th is 1 to 1 rpm, and 5'th spins the output shaft faster then the input is spinning.
I wrote my response wrong there, sorry about that. what i meant was a kind joking thing, meaning that i didn't know about the browny transmission, i do want too.
Sorry, i write things the way i'd say them, but without hearing my voice it can be misunderstood.
i really am interested in this extra transmission. does it have over-drive? meaning does the output shaft move faster then the input shaft when in 5'th gear? because that would drive the transaxle faster, which would be cool
Looks like wicked fun. My nephew and i were goofing around with tractors in the back yard- he did a wicked high wheelie and managed to somehow come flying across the yard and run into my tractor- he was darn close to breaking my leg......
Dangerous for sure, a demo derby would be painfull. i think the people would break before the tractors. yeah, rolling a craftsman, or any other vertical shaft light riding mower over isn't any big deal, but when you're on a 620+ pound bolens tractor, and it rolls, and its locked posi, it keeps moving and trying to grind you up. so bassically you learn to jump away fast!
I flipped my modded murray over a couple times- on concrete- ( owch), had a heck of a time trying to flop it back down and keep it from falling backwards on me- since i was laying flat on the ground ( this was after i put the twin 18 on it)- i suppose the worst bit was when the gas started pouring out.......
Did you notice the twin 18 in this video? it was kicking some serious ass, one of the most reliable tractors that day. only problem was the belt slipping, and the spark plug wire arcing out when it was completly drenched with water. that and the beast uses too much gas. but i guess thats the price for 18 "so called" HP.
The horizontal twin on the tractor with no hood? I own a few of twin 18's ( verticle shaft) and one horizontal- one 18.5HP i have on my modded murray- things a screemer- you can tell its alot more powerful then the 14HP i had originally on it.
they are cool engines, the twins. they are pretty much the only briggs engines i like. those the the 3.5HP lawnmower type engines. vertical or horizontal. i just dig those. and i'm sure back in the very early days, pre 50's they had alot of cool engines as well. The twins are just cool though. i've had one apart and its very impressive. but when i think about how a bolens 850's wisconsin has 8.25HP brand new, and thats sopposed to be 10HP more... i've got to say it just isn't.
Ive had the best luck from twin cylender motors- altho- 1. They have a hard time starting 2. starter motors are b*tch to change! Specially on my horizontal 18HP briggs- haveta tear the whole tractor nearly apart to get to it. Twins also have alot more power then singles- i can tell on my 94 modifed.
yeah, i normally need an actual Car battery to start mine... but with this one we use another tractor, and a long belt going right to the front engine pully. Yeah, the starters... i just changed that one the other day. about an hour of work almost. atleast this one has no hood or anything in the way. but they really should have made that easier. like the smaller briggs engines. trying to get that bolt under the flywheel is rediculous!
Yea i use a 1/2" open end wrench- the pain is trying to get the threads started putting it back in. On my 86 theres an oil drain tube UNDER the pan under the engine- so in order to lift the motor, you need to drain the oil as well.
Ive thought about looking for some small car batteries ( with around 500 CCA) for my twins- the damn things keep eating batteries.
aww, honda civic batteries are the way to go. perfect size. and plenty of power. its the same exact size that bolens tractors used to come with. i'm using a pretty big ass car battery in my 15 HP 1 Cylinder briggs sears. nice to have the extra cranking power! That oil drain stuff sounds stupid. we romped the twin again today, all day, and the thing kept going strong all day.
man, it was a crazy day today, i don't know how much footage we have, but it was insane.
These tractor videos are so awesome. it would take me weeks to watch them all. Absolutely awesome.
