Do you have a thousand odd names for the works of bach? Modern composers are nowhere near as prolific as the classical composers... so they have time to consider names etc. In terms of modern notation, bach wrote a note every few seconds, 24/7 for the years of his life. Non-stop. That kind of output means that names are optional, and also kind of pointless....
Sorry, guys. Bach originally wrote this to be played on Clavier, which is a very quiet and portable instrument. Harpsichord would have been used as well, but Bach would have used the clavier while composing (if he used it at all!) these inventions. Regardless of what instrument you play this on, it should be at a steady tempo (slow or fast), for this is sort of pieces for students.
i don't think it really matters what instrument you play it on. no matter what you play it on you can't hurt the music of bach. but the original instrument is the harpsichord.
@chemicalreaper Could you explain that further maybe, you write it to keep the mind sharp or you mean write it for the fingers to exercise independently? I am very interested in this type of music, I love to play it on the digital piano I have using the harpsichord sound. And yeah the counterpoint is that it's the same melodic content in both hands? In what way are they good for you as composer to write?, I see them as good for me as a pianoplayer, great finger-exercise and challenge for brain.
@chemicalreaper Well, some composers need some practice at the piano, and for them, the writing of inventions is good counterpoint practice but also builds keyboard chops....
My opinion is that you are able to play the notes, but it isn't music yet.... no articulation or any interpretation is hearable. (I play the harpsichord by myself)
somehow i get the feeling that that's about as much time as bach spent sitting at his desk and writing down the notes on the paper for that invention.
It's not just Bachs ability to invent as he plays that is spellbinding, it's his amazing and infinite ability to modulate, of which he had the modulation of a Skylark!
@8118995 Is just another way to listen the same interpretations. Most of the inventions here are in Piano and i am not disagree with that. Just want that you guys, listened with the original instrument. I guess.
aieeeee, i'm having so much trouble with the opening of this song [invention no. 1] in terms of coordinating my hands. The rest of the song flows fairly easy for me but the first few measures are a pain.
Thanks. I listend to a lot of "experts" play this on piano-forte. The harpsichord IS the correct instrument. It has the right sound for the pieces. Thanks for posting.
this make smarts you music

I LOVE the use of multiple voices in these inventions, they produce an effect that makes the inventions quite unique and pleasant to hear.

@jevres342 it's BWV ... it means Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis , so it's a catalogue of bach's works
Stivsh 5 months ago
One reason I like this is cause it's not tuned to Baroque pitch and hence sounds more to the 'correct' pitch; just in my opinion I guess...(:

why are these called inventions? and also why are classic pieces usually named in numbers and not actually having a name? =/

Try using a metronome at like, 40. Do it over and over again. Worked for me.

What a lot of tapping from the action of the keys!
Should n't you rather feel the moment that the quill plucks the strings?
1401JSC 2 years ago
heavy hands...but still..a good performance. CHEERS! Don't let the tapping bother you.

Are all his inventions based around like a single theme? cause they all sound somewhat similar to me. Like a similar theme.
