Ugga wigga wigwam! Great Broadway dancers! And how they moved from side to side, isn't easy to do! Thank you J.M. Barrie, and especially thanks to Mary Martin and the great Cyril Ritchard for his portrayal of Mr. Darling and of Captain Hook. I am glad to have been alive when this was first shown on tv.
Well I'm an Oklahoman and both sides of my family are Cherokee, but damn people need to stop taking offense to this. This was made 50 years ago before political correctness even existed. When I was a child and I saw this, I didn't think twice about this. All I thought was that they were the good Indians helping Peter Pan fight the mean pirates. This is directed towards children for that reason. If you can't watch without the use of your inner-child, then Peter Pan is not for you.
I have to say, this version definitely seems more directed towards children. It's got the cuteness factor, matched with funny words and dances. The Cathy Rigby version is definitely directed towards an older audience because they know people love the show and grew up watching it, however if a kid watched the Cathy indian scene they would probably just be like "Oh...cool" and probably remember it less bc it was so complicated.
I pefer the Cathy Rigby version of this scene. The Indians aren't dumb people who keep bumping into each other shouting Ugga Wugga meatball. The Indains were hunting the boys and dancing and fighting. They were organized and threatning. When I was little I was afraid as the Indains, as it should be. Cuz the boys are runnin from the Indians, but with them acting like this...I don't see what there concern was
hahahahahahahahaha sooo thats wer Masterson got the idea for tiger lily's dance =) hahaha (sorry thinking out loud) this dance or more the idea of the dance was borrowed for Chaffey High School's production of Peter Pan back in 2009 as well as 2005 if im not mistaken... as always chaffey's was amazing =) at least we hav something to be proud of other than our campus
This film is a large part of my childhood, I watched it all the time, I wanted Neverland to be real, I wanted Peter Pan to be real, and we could fly to Neverland, and never grow up and just play all the time, seemed like a good idea and a lot of fun at the time.
rofl. I always thought this part was seriously effed up even at five years old. I am Navajo and though I loved this movie, I thought this part was absolute bullshit because I knew we never acted like that at home.
k wen yure a 5 or 6 yr old yu dont NOTICE that tiger lily is blonde ok?!?! thus is so kods kno who she is!!! wen yu watch thus yu shud b thinkin of the fun memories!!!! LUV THIS DANCE
I can't believe some of you are looking for reality in this production! Peter Pan is played by a woman, the kids are taken care of by a dog, they fly to a far away land of dancing animals. Then they meet Captain Hook, who makes Elton John look downright conservative. He is chased by an alligator with a clock in his stomach. And you are confused about a blonde Indian in all this? Besides, Sonya Lee--who played Tiger Lily --was a dynamite dancer and really cute. Color videotape from 1960!
lol i liked the cathy rigby production of this indian scene... the indians costumes are better and so is the choreogaphy... The indians here are jus cute tho lol.
Wow. Totally forgot that Tiger Lilly was blonde, which is probably the worst part of this. But the fact that I don't remember makes it seem less important.
Fun fact: the girl who played Tiger Lily had a small part in Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita. In the party scene at the end, she's the blonde girl who dances out of the room. She was always my favorite character in this version of Peter Pan, it's so funny to see her in something else!
@deadzonefan13 I was going to mention the same thing! I had to watch La Dolce Vita for an Italian history class and I knew I recognized her. The scene she's in is certainly interesting! Excellent film.
@MegaMoviemaker13 I wouldn't say that it's racist. Since Neverland is a euphimism for the imagination, then they're basically what most young boys would imagine an Indian to be. It's a caricature, not to be taken seriously.
Anyone stop to think that maybe, she was just the best person for this role? And, think, that it's a FAIRYTALE made for, children. I think she's just adorable!
This is a total send up of Indians- note Tiger Lily is the only blond one. It's all a fantasy in a kid's imagination.
Sorry, but anyone who thinks this choreography is advanced, knows nothing of the history of the movie or the Broadway musical. This was at the end of the era of great choreography, not the beginning.

I cannot believe i stumbled on this, this brings back some of the craziest memories and nostalgia i have ever felt, especially this scene, i had completely forgotten about this, seeing that girl at the very start of this clip brought it all back.
I remember watching this when I was a kid and the Indian/Native American number was ALWAYS one of my favorite scenes. Looking back now, the choreography for this number was quite impressive, considering it was the early 1960s. I've seen the new version, and, although that choreography is more advanced and "adult" (in the sense that it's more impressive), this show was meant to be shown primarily to children. I think both the actors and choreographers kept it on an innocemt level deliberately.
I wonder what happened to the times where everyone remembered the Indians as a bunch of unholy savages who killed children in front of their parents and ate peoples hearts as a sign of bravery? I mean we brutally screwed them over also, but ours was a formal screwing with documents we made to wrongfully justify ourselves and not a chop off your head and feed it to your family type of screw over.
tiger lily is made to stand out from the other indians because she's the princess...but it still seems a little wrong that she is blonde hair fair skin. thats not how she is suppost to look.
@OurGangFan i know that. i'm just saying....that tigerlily isnt suppost to look like that. in preformances peter pan is mostly played by girls because of their vocal skills and acting ones. im just saying its wrong to depict tiger lily like that.
Half my family is native american and my great grandfather was an indian chief so I always thought true ones were tan. Besides I don't think it matters what color native americans are, thats irrelevant. Look at pocohontas, that has tan skinned indians and all the other kids films. No kid would think they're white unless they ONLY watched this and its the culture of the native american that matters the most, not their skin color. I'm white as a ghost and I'm half native american.
Screw political correctness. This is Peter Pan. You are supposed to let yourself be a kid when you watch or read Peter Pan. Stop growing up for the remainder of this film. If you already are an adult then ungrow yourself until this is over.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against this show, as I highly enjoyed Peter Pan as a kid, but now that I look at this as a high schooler, I see how children can easily misinterpret Indians as these "strange dancing" people, with a negative connotation. The only reason children playing cowboys and indians view indians this way is because of the entertainment they're exposed to, which tend to portray indians this way. Without such connotations, new generations would not begin with such views.
Now I'm good at critiquing acting, music, and other theatrical attributes, but I've never been all that good at dance critique. But I can tell you right now that this dance was done superiorly. The moves were unique, the rhythm was perfect, they were greatly in unison and on cue, and they did a great job of sticking to the theme
@ aleigha0707 I used to want to be her when I was little too...It's funny how when we're kids and we see an attractive dominant female on tv, we are like..."I'm her." I heard my Lil cousin do it and I cracked up...lol
I used to want to BE Tiger Lily so bad. The headband my mom would mske for me out of construction paper and a feather from our feather duster wasn't quite as cool as her's, but still awesome none the less. And I used to do her dance in front of the TV.
I miss dancing to my favorite songs on TV. This also reminds me of watching Rainbow Bright and singing on my "Star Stage" (a little microphone attached to a few pedals that would play music and stuff) to her rendition of "Twinkle Twinkle":)
I love this. I quite like just playing these videos and listening to them while I work. The background noise helps me concentrate. Thanks for uploading these!
J.M. Barrie says that Neverland is basically a collection of the fantasies of many children. So these aren't even "real" indians, they're a kid's fantasy of them.
Y'know, even though it is very unlikely that an Indian have blonde hair and fair skin (I'm only guessing), I think this Tiger Lilly is my absolute favorite. She puts a LOT of character into her character.
oh come on people, your being rediculous if you think this is racist. it's just a movie and it was the 60s! i was born in 84 and have seen this so many times i know it by heart and used to dance this particular bit with kids in my preschool, yes thats how many of us knew it! it was very popular even then and i dont think it represents real native americans. sheesh
It might seem racists (and yes, it probably is) But think of it within the mindset of a young child. This is what kids think of when they imagine Native Americans. I know that's what I always thought when we played Cowboys and Indians as a kid. It's just now that we're adults we're more concerned about being "politically correct" and not offending anyone or making social faux paux. And you have to admit that this is a really fun number. (Even if Tiger Lily is a bit caucasian).
Do they still have these "Indians" in recent productions? I mean, really, ugga wugga meatball. Why not black kids with overalls and watermelons?

Alright, let me pose a question.
Whose job is it to teach kids the difference between fantasy and reality?
It's not the job of television.
If you are leaving it up to your television and your movies to teach your kids about life, you have officially failed as a parent. It's YOUR job!
In the end, it is the job of the parents to teach the kids about life. Not the teachers, not the government, and definitely not the media.

Ah, the political incorrectness of childhood~ xDD

the indian coreography reminds me a little of nijinsky's coreography from the rite of spring

Y'know, even though it is very unlikely that an Indian have blonde hair and fair skin (I'm only guessing), I think this Tiger Lilly is my absolute favorite. She puts a LOT of character into her character.

oh come on people, your being rediculous if you think this is racist. it's just a movie and it was the 60s! i was born in 84 and have seen this so many times i know it by heart and used to dance this particular bit with kids in my preschool, yes thats how many of us knew it! it was very popular even then and i dont think it represents real native americans. sheesh
joule1115 2 years ago 3
@joule1115 So because you like it and because it's from the 60s it can't possibly be racist? Good argument.
Daenyris 2 years ago
It might seem racists (and yes, it probably is) But think of it within the mindset of a young child. This is what kids think of when they imagine Native Americans. I know that's what I always thought when we played Cowboys and Indians as a kid. It's just now that we're adults we're more concerned about being "politically correct" and not offending anyone or making social faux paux. And you have to admit that this is a really fun number. (Even if Tiger Lily is a bit caucasian).
