yeah, dancers are athletes. Both of my daughters have class at least two hours a day 6 days a week. It takes work to make something look beautiful and effortless.
Just breath taking, impressive and the most dynamic 'kitri' ever.I personally think she is the best 'kitri' ever. She also bring her 'Latin' temprement into her role.
Hello, reader. If you had started reading this, don't stop or else. If you don't post this, a boy with no head and legs will show up in ur room at midnight kill you. Everyone will forget you. start posting. the time will start as soon as you finish reading this. yes I do hate these comme
Sylvie (and this video) have forever ruined any other Don Quixote/Kitri for me. I just watched, in person, excerpts performed by National Ballet of Cuba, a world-class troupe, and I thought, "Well, that girl's no Sylvie."
In my opinion, she and her movements look masculine rather than feminine... she has that 'masculine energy' oozing out of her in each of her movements, just look at how muscular her body is! I'm sure it is the result of her years of training. but this is just an opinion, not a judgment against her.
@charizianne I think what you're talking about is more her method of attack than her actual body. She doesn't really dance 'timid' or 'dainty', she charges in there and does it in a really assertive, fearless, almost athletic manner. If your idea of feminine dancing is very hesitant and coy then yeah she's gonna seem masculine to you. To me she just seems strong and just absolutely badass.
In my opinion, she and her movements look masculine rather than feminine... but this is just an opinion, not a judgment against her. she has that 'masculine energy' oozing out of her in each of her movements
I wish that everyone in the world who ever had a question about whether or not ballet really required "hard work" could see this documentary.
Sylvie reminds us that dancers are forever moving: If it's not on stage, it's rehearsal; it's class; it's body conditioning; it's swimming; it's physio; it's fittings; it's sewing...
The ballet dancer devotes every single second and every single body part to their craft.
I sometimes wonder if there's a harder working body on earth!
sylvie beats all ballerinas, just with her honesty, personality and her passion.......... she's soooo real when she dances.......she takes me right to her, i feel like I'm actually there hahahaha lol, I know i'm crazy ;)
Je n'ai jamais vu une artiste aussi aérienne puisant autant d'énergie dans le sol, un corps aussi impétueux exprimant autant de féminité. Je suis bluffé.
She is was and always will be the most tasteful ballerina of her time, absolutely sensitive to the audience in how she reaches her extensions and using her feet.....mademoiselle Guillem you are simply the best
She is one of the most perfect dancers ever. Born with the IDEAL body for ballet, and with an enormous talent she has mastered the female ballet world
Her dance its her life, thats all, its every think in a very short moment of time, i am a dancer i and i know it, its life in only one second, maybe less. I love her very much because of that.
What is also WONDERFUL about this clip is that we see the work of TWO GREAT FRENCH ARTISTS, Thesmar and Guillem. Apparently, Thesmar was Guillem's idol every since Guillem's "petit rat" period. Thesmar has the charisma, persona, and strength to coach someone as "difficult" as Guillem [difficult" = Mademoiselle NON! =)]
Guillem has to be without a doubt my favorite dancer. She brings life into every role she dances. I wonder what type of shoes she wears....................haha
I don't really think its about lines, I think what makes Guillem so different is her will power to just keep pushing the limit. She exorts such power and passion into everything she does and it takes so much energy to do it. Guillem also has long limbs and practically perfect extention and turnout and her feet just add to it too.
I agree with Kdub10009 - its all a matter of personal taste. Personally I prefer Guillem to Zakharova, only because I feel that Zakharova's arms sometimes look doube jointed or disjointed in her ports de bras - especially in swan lake. But againe everyone's opinion is different. I have a preference for French ballerinas and I do believe Guillem is prima ballerina assoluta - she pioneered the legs zipping past the ear - she is the one who started al the controversy and I love her for it!
Of course there is no 'right' or 'wrong' when it comes to declaring the 'best ballerina ever', as it's entirely a matter of personal taste, but in my opinion it's too soon to declare Zakharova the best of all time; her career is too young still.
you're comparing Zakharova to Guillem? Did you know that Zakharova copied Guillem's 6 o'clock? She even said it in an interview at one point. That's where Zakharova got her so-called distorted "lines," which she couldn't refine to the extent that Guillem did.
I'm just curious; I'm not trying to be impertinent or anything but can I ask what you mean when you say, "couldn't refine to the extent that Guillem did"? xD
guillem wasnt famous just because of her 6 oclock position. nadezda pavlova in the 70s even did it before her at the bolshoi. what distinguished her 6 oclock was that if u look at her "means" to get her leg that high up, there is a certain Guillemesque quality that no other ballerina possesses.
(continued) now i am just talking purely about extensions/ecartes. but the way her ecartes went up to her ears were tremendously different from the way zakharova and even worse, somova, just concentrated on the "ends." thats the way i see their differences in "refinement."
so ur saying zakharova copied her 6oclock by being born super flexible and living up tp the standard that is upheld today-and her lines are gorgeous not distorted, both guillem and zakharova were born with amazing bodies! people dont "copy" 6 oclocks!
theres no question that zakharovas is more distorted and guillems is the the more authentic 6 oclock that has her own supreme quality to it. youre interpreting "copy" too literally. theres no question that guillems 6 oclock was a major inspiration for zakharova, neither she or somova can do it as well as guillem!!! and zakharova did say in that interview that guillem was a major interpretation, too bad u never came across it. im sure u never will.
I don't want to argue either; however, I really cannot compare Sylvie Guillem's god-like qualities to any other dancer, let alone the very inexperienced Zakharova.
Yes Zakharova is very talented, but the passion that Sylvie has is just something that I feel cannot be topped. Sylvie also has so much experience which i feel in her dancing has almost a wisdom like quality.
This is my opinion, and dancers cannot really be compared just in general because it depends on your taste and preference.
THat's Ghislaine Thesmar coaching her -- she's not marking. HTe bits of looking hits way and htat are mime stuff, huh? (Where's that Basilio? he's so annoying) But there's nobody to play off; but she's dancing full out, looks to me.
I had the privilege to watch her closely in my student years. Whether it was marking, barre before the show, or even coming in religously to observe and 'feel' her role/music being performed in the matinee, she seemed to immerse herself completely, yet be acutely aware of everything around her, never missing a beat. She is different from everybody, because she is always in the moment...a skill which most actors wished they had. She is a great artist.
Aurelie has a different body its sort of impossible to compare them both because their bodies are so different. aurelie however has a cleaner quality that comes with having a body that you mold thru hard work , rather then improve on what was born on the tip of perfection
her feet are phenomenal-and she works them so well. She is also so clean in her pelvis! NEVER tucks or tilts-always in that perfect neutral zone. She is also surprisingly co-ordinated for someone with such beautiful long limbs!!
But I think my favorite thing about her is her feet.... mmmmm *druel* haha
I couldnt say because I have not seen many french dancers. But what I do notice is that, as someone has already said...the element of drama is often times not there. And all people want to do is showcase perfect technique. Which is something to show off of course, but it only stands out if you perform as she does in this clip. haha. I look forward to seeing more French ballerinas in the near future.
I love these clips of her.She truly is amazing. Often times american daners overlook those of other countries, especially in France and Russia. There is a quality in how they are taught and in how they perform that is undeniably different. BUT this woman I think is beyond her years in the dance world. Never have I seen ballet look this easy!
This is inspiring! She seems to enjoy herself so much--and it is one heck of a counterexample against the charge that she is a soulless dancer. She puts in as much passion and energy as anyone else would put in a stage performance.
I couldn't agree with you more. I was so fortunate to get to see her live 3 years ago in Marguerite and Armand at Lincoln Center. Sylvie brought a level of drama compelling me to tears - something very, very few dancers, especially the current generation of dancers, can do to me.
Thank you for this! I love to see dancers in rehearsal. So much more interesting to see dancers sweat, grimace and make mistakes than to see the soft focus and pretty images that have made people think ballet is easy! It takes practice (even Sylvie takes a barre) to make something look effortless!
yeah, dancers are athletes. Both of my daughters have class at least two hours a day 6 days a week. It takes work to make something look beautiful and effortless.

Thank you for this! I love to see dancers in rehearsal. So much more interesting to see dancers sweat, grimace and make mistakes than to see the soft focus and pretty images that have made people think ballet is easy! It takes practice (even Sylvie takes a barre) to make something look effortless!
