Actually, the 50mm f/1.4 isn't just a SLIGHT upgrade. You get the ultrasonic motor which is much faster, more accurate and virtually silent. You get sharper glass with a larger aperture as well. The overall construction is also much better on the 1.4 being more durable and made of better quality materials. You get a proper focus ring instead of that plastic piece at the front of the element which causes your fingers to be in the way most of the time. You get a metal mount vs plastic on the 1.8
