He was God incarneted, 'cause in the directors' cut he disappears in the desert after speaking with Bloom and then he resurrects him after he's been killed
I wish they showed more of the Hospitaller fighting. That kill he did in the forest in the beginning was so badass, when he climbed on the horse and hid behind it and then swung his sword and absolutely took out the archer
My favorite Character to, it is awesome to see how David Thewlis also helps heal the soul of Balian through kind counsel. A great dipiction of a priest fulfilling his vocation.
Hospitaller had to be more of a tough guy than a wise guy...In reality they were very feared and brutal force, arguably more than Templars. They made characters and military orders too stereotypical in this movie..
@TRschwarzesonne If you're talking about this video, the video is muted and there's only music playing. If you're talking about the movie, it was a highly biased movie. Based on badly researched material which sided with Islam, and made Christianity look bad.
That Hospitaller is a lie. The idea that everyone in Jerusalem was murdered in the first Crusade was also another lie. The idea that 70,000 Muslims were in the city is another lie, written in the Muslim book, A concise history of Humanity.
@MontChevalier it is fact that the crusaders had no qualms who they were fighting on the siege of Jerusalem of 1099. The city had Jews, Muslims and native Christians trying to hold out the Franks(as the Crusaders were called by the Arabs). Thousands were massacred including women and children and this barbaric fanaticism was to repeated again even closer to home against the Cathar sect in Southern France 100 years later. I'm writing this on Christian perspective by the way!
@blackarawak83 The Christians were exiled to prevent another Antioch incident. Have you even studied the Crusades? Not a single Christian stood with the Muslims. The Muslims in the city had over 2,000 soldiers, and drafted jews aswell, that's another 500. When the Crusaders came, the Muslims poisoned all the wells around the city and harrassed them at every step. Were the men, women and children on the Crusader side also no innocent? You're no Christian, if you're siding with Islam.
Similarly (But much more epic) when the defenders of Constantinople in 1453 decided to fight the Turks than surrender the city.
Greek/Roman/Byzantine Emperor Constantine Dragases Palaiologos, replying to the Turkish Sultan to surrender the city:
"To surrender the city to you is beyond my authority or anyone else's who lives in it, for all of us, after taking the mutual decision, shall die out of free will without sparing our lives"
@alxxz Yes, very cool lines. My favorite too. Thewlis and Irons were great in "Kingdom", but the script and directing were very weak. Too bad, It could have been a classic. There's much potential in Thewlis, hope he gets better roles in the future..
Hospitaller: I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, ...and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What god desires is here [points to head]and here [points to heart].
@Stevens89265 I agree. If you've ever seen the director's cut (which is so much better by the way, adding around 50 minutes of footage) he is even more angel-like.
I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. I've seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness
I'm a Hospitaller as was my ancestor in the 3rd crusade now, I saw this film after being invited to the group and i must say his temprement and character are very comforting if you will. i havent seen the extended version but have heard they played him as a ghost after his death..which i dont get but still. good video. for those interested i was knighted into the order and if curious questions can be answered depending. history repeats itself, and david thewlis is a superb actor.
I proved it for that reason, had help tracing the other half of my family who have the same estates etc they were a big help. Possibly your fascination with the Thewlis/hospitaler character (fascination manifested in almost all comments here) has to do with a supernatural aura around the personage.
E.g. he mysteriously dematerializes in the "burning bush" scene, seems to "resurrect" Balian fatally injured by Lusignan's assassins, utters "gnostic-like" teachings, etc...
Beware, o knights, lest ye be led astray by this fascinating character, perfect virtual vehicle for seeding your unconscious with who knows what.
nah... The fascination with the Hospitaller character is that he speaks the truth instead of all the bull others tell him which is more than I can say for the majority of humanity. Then you denounce him like your beliefs are superior? Pure Ignorance... The bible was written by man, the heart and mind were made by God. Which one is more credible?
is there an argument to say that he is a ghost? i cant remember the scenes with him at the begining, but i dont think any1 ever speaks 2him personally apart from balian? i could be wrong. its true about the virtual vehicle tho, very suttle
Hospitaler and King Baldwin were the most fascinating characters is this movie, very wise men at peace with themselves but the way they died was heartbreaking...
I was kidding, it would be a bit macabre. However, Thewlis's best scene in the movie is the surreal bit where he and Bloom are in the desert with the burning bush.
@IneptTroopr: I would submit that it's not necessary. When we last see him, he knows that he's going off to die; by the time of Hattin, Hospitallers had gained such a reputation for prowess in battle that even if they surrendered, they were put to death, being too dangerous for Saladin's army to allow ransom for. The character knows the coming battle cannot be won, but he must go regardless, so he knows his death waits for him. Seeing his head simply confirms his fate for the audience.
Yes, I totally agree. There's something so irresistible about this character. I just have no idea how Thewlis built his part so amazingly, but such a bravest and wisest fighter really fascinates me.

I am Turk but I liked this Knight hospitaller :)
He is so wise man. He knows the line of destiny !
And He only does his job ( defending his faith and religion )
Even he guess his bad ending , he still continued that he must to do !
respect !

The Hospitaler died in the Battle of Hattin.
He knew that he would die, but thought that they were still fighting for God.
While the intention of the battle was for glory and wealth.
R.I.P. Hospitaler
AqworldsWiki 1 year ago
By far one of the best characters of the film.
And my favourite quote was when he and Balian meet just as the assembled army was marching head on to fight the Muslims.
Balian: You go with the army?
Hospitaler: My order is with the army.
Balian: You go to certain Death.
Hospitaler: All Death is certain. I shall tell your father what I've seen you become.
This kind of abnegation and defiance towards death has always fascinated me greatly!

I watched the movie again, it is a masterpiece, despite its very sly, sneaky propaganda tools.
Others than Balian speak to the hospitaller.
For example, at the dinner table, in the French castle, the host rebukes the hospitaller for not drinking.
