Yeah, i think a monopod would work really well with your style, it is true though that tripods can sometimes restrict your motion but they're definatley totally valid, interesting teacher though, she/he was probably just trying to make sure no begginner locked themselves into that one way of filming. You, however, are obviously not a begginner.
this is a really sublime piece of work, it could have run smoother but im guessing you were using a handheld, even so you captured a profoud beauty in what most simply disregard as disgusting, scary, or simply just not important. Fantastic work!
thank you! i'm really glad you liked it. my film teacher didn't believe in tripods for some reason... i think if i do something like this again im going to film with one of those single-legged tripods that is basically a huge stake you shove into the ground.
