I loved this when I was a kid. Ernie was always so silly, which was fantastic, but everyone has their serious moments, and this was one of Ernie's rare ones. Plus, it's a beautiful song when you really think about it. It amazes me when something like this pops into my head, and it just always seems to be on youtube. Thank goodness for that, cause u'd probably never see this stuff again. SStreet is just not the same as when we were kids, and kids today can see this great vintage stuff
@nyc14gauge......... i felt like u spoke on behalf of me...... i listend to this 3 times....and all the while ...kept re-readin ur post.....insightful...to say the least....
I know why adults find this song sad. Its because Ernie is singing about an idyllic place, a place called "home". As kids, we had a place that was safe and sound (hopefully) that we knew we could always go home to. As adults, we have a longing for that place, but in until we make a place of our own where we can feel as safe as when we did as kids, we'll always be on the moon or under the sea, trying to get back home.
This sounds so pathetic but when I was a little kid I used to cry to this song haha. I'm going through a breakup at the moment... I litterally just turned to this song for comfort haha
im a 90's kid and its so sad to see what kids watc htoday. and we wonder why there so "distant" and there disrespctful. THIS STUFF! this stuff we watch matters!! i pitty the kids of the 21st centurie. and im sure damn glad i was born in september 1996 so i could watch this stuff. best stuff ever!
I love this song. Im 30 and I still love to watch Ernie. This reminds me of mornings as a little kid watching sesame street. They have changed the show so much its not the same.
I remembered this song from when I was like 5, looked it up and learned to play it on guitar and sing... whoever clicked dislike must have been distracted by a moonbeam.
me and my 30 year old brother are IN LOVE with this song!! soo cute and peaceful with a good message. They sure don't make kids shows like this anymore!!
Not a far stretch that this is the first English song really, really liked. I liked it as a child, and then sort of lost track of it for 10 or so years, and finally rediscovered it via an old mp3 track hidden away in a campus computer. Suffice to say the memories came flooding back, and i never looked away ever since. I hope i can teach this one song to my children.
This was my daughter's favorite song when she was little, and i still like it very much. It makes me wish for the good times. No oil spill, and global warming was still a myth. Who agrees?
this reminds me of loving shawn colvin and working at sesame street store(scoottsdale) and spending my whole pay check on sesame clothes and toys LOL/
Man... I remembered this tune from like 20 years ago. I could only recall a couple lines of the lyrics, but I was amazed by how well I rememberd the tune.
@Phys1905 aww, what a sweet memory! I hope to have kids someday to I think ill sing them this song. I remember this song from when I was a little girl.
@freaker142 You don't forget things like this, life as an adult becomes cluttered and filled with worries and other BS. But you'll always have sweet memories of your childhood, like this song.
We sing the tune to the 23rd Psalm at the begining of our Shabbat morning meal. It truly adds to that uplifting & spiritual meal.
Mizmur L'David, Hashem Roe lo echsar. Benos desha yerbetzene, al mei menuchos ynalane. Nafshe yshovav, yanchane vmagele tzedek lman shemo. Since Jim Henson's sudden death in 1990, Kermit and Ernie have been performed by Steve Whitmire. No one can sound exactly like Jim, but Withmire's voice is too high pitched. I love Jim's deep voice of Kermit, and his slightly less deep voice of Ernie.
@ameaglejazzdude Life is most literally what we decide to make of it. Those who wish to live longer tend to, those who keep to their dreams are the ones who change the world. If it truly hasn't killed your hopes; I'd suggest looking into Temporal Mechanics.
The Children's Theatre in Minneapolis has a new show, Bert & Ernie, Goodnight!, and this song is so amazingly done! If your in the area, you should see it - very, very nostalgic!
built like a lullaby and maintains the soothing quality while digging into more serious themes of remembering loved ones & one's origins no matter how far your life has taken you. Powerfully accessible to people of any age, gender or culture.
It is a cleaver way to say to someone that you love them. It is in the creative mind of a child but as emotionally sophisticated as an adult might have.
I can't believe this song has been stuck in my head for over 20 years. You guys are right, it does sound kind of sad & haunting. But still one of my most favorite Sesame Street songs ever.
The answer is because it's written in minor chords. When you learn about music you will understand that the minor and major chords can make a person feel something that has nothing to do with the words.
The words are not sad, the combination of chords make you THINK that it is sad, but it isn't.
You're an idiot. I actually do a cover of this tune with my band. C-G-Am-F-G-C (repeat) F-C-F-C-F-C-G-Am-F-G-C [bridge] F-C-G-C (repeat) F-C-G-Am-F-G-C
You're a moron. The chords he posted obviously have nothing to do with the song as it clearly doesn't have enough chords per measure.
His entire point was demonstrating the idea that major chords sound happier than the minor chords that sound sad.
What he posted appears to be an example of one of the most basic structures of chord progression that contains both major and minor relationships in the key of C.
Should have been kind of obvious for a superstar like you.
Oh it was obvious, and I felt like correcting it. Just like I feel like correcting you.
And major and minor chords aren't what drive the emotion of this song. It's the tempo, and the fact that Ernie doesn't want to live on the moon. Increase the tempo and the song changes.
And yes, I am a superstar that has much more talent and understanding of musical themes than you.
Being sad over this song has nothing to due with a chord progression. Unchained Melody uses the same series of chords. Hearing it outside of the movie scene in GHOST isn't as effective as the scene and song combined. When YOU learn that the human soul is quite unexplainable you will realize that the music, words and imagery involved are very persuading to our emotions. Look at the screen: glimpses of a childhood with beautiful music in a time when things were much much better.
My left ear really enjoyed hearing this again.
