The amazing Jarno. Those who did not see him race will never know, but this guy had no fear and i believe that he was one of the very best racers of all time. RIP.
Jarno Saarinen was the driver who developed driving style what they use nowadays...and this is true!! He accelerated much earlier than others and braked much later than others... that's why he was great great driver!!!
Great racer! But so was Kim Newcombe -- a privateer on a home-made 500cc Konig bike with an outboard motor as the engine and running 2nd in the 1973 championship when he crashed and died at Silverstone after vainly warning the race organisers to put in some straw bales on the very corner on which he ended up dying. Jarno, Kim, Renzo -- they all died far too soon in 1973.
I remember seeing Saarinen drifting the rear end of his Yamaha around Druids at Brands Hatch, impressive stuff, what a competitor !. A tragic loss of a very talented rider.
The Italian magazine Tuttomoto has photo's of Pasolini's bike ,post accident with the cylinders off. Seizure marks are very clear on the pistons and in the cylinder bores.
I remember Swedish TV stopping the TV for the news of the Monza accident. The racing world, and all of Scandinavia stopped breathing. Jarno... Oh no... I knew Johnny Dodds, he was arrested by Italian police for arguing with the officials to dry the oil on the track. Pasolini, who put the oil there, said nothing, he hid. Ok he died, idiot, but Jarno and the others who crashed? Several never raced again. The FIM banned international racing in Italy for 5 years. Monza should NOT have happened.
It was Pasolini who dropped the oil on the track. He knew this, his bike was covered in oil! He KNEW the track was dangerous, as did all the other riders who took part in that race. But many riders in the next race, the one of the accident, didn't know, if they did they assumed the oil was cleaned up. When asked to help force the Italians to clean up the oil by racers who saw the oil was still there Pasolini ran and hid, refusing to help. I was told this by GP racers who were there!
The oil on the track was from the race preceding this one - the 350 cc race. More specifically, from Walter Villa's Benelli (not sure abt the make of bike).
There is another theory backed by evidence that the crash was caused by Renzo's Aermacchi seizing.
Whatever it was, the oil was definitely not from Renzo's bike.
I am called Jarno Renzo, and I was born on 28th of May 1973, this is true.
Ans yes, I used to drive a Ducati. A black Monster 600. Nothing special. Nothing special, I know. Girls liked it though. But when I put the brakes on too hard on a slippery exit ramp one morning, hit the asfalt and cracked a rib, I didn't feel so heroic.
I love bikes, and power. And artists like Saarinen. Or crazy Mick Doohan, Always will. But power's tricky.
He will always be my total hero..I loved Hailwood, Ago, Sheene, Joey,McGuinness but Jarno will always be in my heart more than any other rider, I was only in my late teens when he died at Monza..the saddest day I ever knew,,the world lost a brilliant man
I was lucky enough to see him race at Mallory Park in the UK. They almost diqualified him because he didn;t go on the warm up lap, the Yamaha was overheating I believe. Only Cal Rayborn could keep up with him at first but he fell off trying on his ancient steel cylinder Harley Davison. He finished so far ahead of everyone else it was a joke. He was brilliant, such a shame he died. Thanks for the memories, great tribute.
Kendo, I too was there to see him walk all over the super bikes, what a rider and one of the very best I have seen but like you say a real shame he died and a huge loss.
He left an impresion and I am honored to have seen him race. Thanks Jarno for so much pleasure. RIP.
such a great man, nice tribute and i can still hear the thunder from yamaha 350 haha. but in august we can also enjoy giacomo too, back in imatra. i just wonder why my parents decided to name me jarno :|
I was watching tv, the GP of Italy, while he died with another italian biker right after the start. At that time it wasn't so many cameras along the circuit, or replay. We have seen all bikers coming back to the boxes. Someone was crying, someone else desperate, and me and my dad (and the tv speaker too) watching didn't know what's happened. After few minutes the tragic news arrived. Glad to see that today security for bikers is so much better.
Back in 73 Jarno was my hero, I was 16. The pictures brought back so many memories especially the ones showing Ago and Barry Sheene behind him. I promised myself when the tragedy happened I would one day pay my respects at his grave. It took me 34 years to do it. But I'm happy to say I finally did it.
really interesting stuff. My Dad was a huge fan, so much so, that i am named after his wife...Soeli. great name love it, was born July 1973, if i was a boy, was to be named Jarno. Sadly my Dad passed away 5 years ago, although he managed to watch the TT races in isle of man before he got too ill. Jar

My sister was borne on May 18th. Just two days before his tragic accident. If she was a boy she would have be named after him. Well, that is than I would a had different name. I was born 3 years later.
Great tribute. Saw him at the Race of the Year at Mallory Park (1972?). The worlds best riders were there on 750s and Jarno was on a 350 Yamaha. He just cleared off, amazing to watch... Greatly missed. Along with Hailwood probably as good as they get!
I was born in 1982, but i have read so many great think about Jarno, great rider but especially great man. I want remember another gret rider who lost life toghether Jarno in the tragical day in Monza: renzo Pasolini. R.I.P greta men.
Great video, never forget Jarno. As a child I have see him at Imola 200 miles and one week before Monza he gave me a signature at the Grand Prix in Hockenheim; I still have it. Now I am the owner from Börje Janssons Yamaha (startnumber 4 at the Monza Grand Prix) which was also involte in that accident in Monza 20.5.73. Searching everything (pictures, video...) from that race. Mabyee somebody can help me. Regards Torsten

He was one of the VERY few riders that I saw in the early 70's that were CLEARLY just that bit quicker and got more from their machines than their competitors. His style and bike set up was influenced to some degree by his roots in ice racing,
also he was one of the first to hang off the bike in those days....certainly one of the fastest riders ever........
je n'arriverais a me faire a toutes ses nouvelles motos pour moi les plus belles machines sont celles de ma jeunesse 60 /70 (idem pour les autos )j'ai toujours mon bol + climax pret a reprendre du bitume
brings back my teenage memories.........i saw him race many times in england,.brands etc,,,against sheene,cecotto,read,......he was great.........he was what legends were all about great stuff!!!!!!!!!
Jarno was unique. He liked his handlebars set very low and his style also came from that. Interestingly, other Finns such as Penti Korhonen and the great Teuvo Lansivuori had a very similar style.
every roadracer comperting today can trace their riding style back to this man. He is the genius that came up with the body off the seat, knee down riding method used today.
Saarinen was the first motorbikerider who I know. I didn't see him driving but I believe he was so popular over the world. It's so irritating when is no videos about his driving.
Jarno was my first racing hero many years ago, the only person to come close to him since is Valentino Rossi. Loved the video, it brought back some great memories.
