@perfectporter this is a silly comment. spiking is a part of any competitive sport. if you want ultimate to grow and be competitive, spiking is a necessary. Maybe you should stick to your bare feet and your drugs, hippie.
@wrxkid85 Spiking is dumb and not necessary. You should lay off the steroids and concentrate on training and pretending like that you know what it's like to score. Also spiking has nothing to do with growth of Ultimate and competition besides being poor spirit.
@cwagnello I don't need to pretend what it is like to be an elite player because (not tooting my own horn) but I am. I know the amount of blood, sweat, and tears ultimate demands and I've sacrificed a great deal for my teams. So again, lets not get things twisted. Spiking is a part of this sport. And its here to stay. Spiking is warranted. And when its not, yes its bad spirit, and quit stupid. If you don't like it maybe you're the one that is on the receiving end of them.
@wrxkid85 I've been scored on and I've been the one scoring. I've caught scores in tournaments that were trivial and game winning scores for a couple of tournaments. Each time I have never felt the need to spike the disc. The supposition that spiking is warranted to me is still poor spirit regardless of the context. Why don't you just spit in your opponent's face or step on them after you score or call them a little b!tch? It's all the same to me.
@cwagnello We're both high level player, so we can agree that spiking is situational. Not a must do every time you score, right? I feel that bickering and arguing about calls is in more poor spirit than spiking. You can play some physical ultimate, get some spikes laid down, take them like a man, and with no arguing... then at the end of the day everyone can party together. But after arguing and bad calls, no one wants to get along and be friends. And the comradery is what its all about.
@wrxkid85 I can see someone spiking a disc because of the impact of the score and being pumped up on adrenaline. In that situation it's reasonable but I guess that the frequency and the way some college teams and Open teams use it, spiking the disc has turned into something that happens after scoring and to me it lessens the impact of spiking. I agree there are other forms of bad spirit and I see spiking as one of those forms if it's done gratuitously (but where is that line).
@cwagnello Yeah dude. Thats what I was getting at. Impact plays, momentum changers. Those game changing plays or huge scores. Spike that shit! There is a lot of gratuity in ultimate. Some is good, some is bad. To me the line is pretty cut and dry, but a lot of others can not draw the distinction so easily. Thats the problem.
