The Stranglers have many faces, and each one of them has it's appeal, to me. Personally, I love the classic songs from their first era, but, as singer and performer, I prefer Paul rather than Chris. It's just another concept. Anyway, they're one of my "top 5" bands of all times.
just wish cornwell would get back with the stranglers put their differences from the past aside. they need to come back with force. music today is dying.
It's an OK song. They should have stopped calling themselves the Stranglers when Paul Roberts replaced Hugh. I probably would have listened to more of the post Hugh stuff then without constantly making mental comparisons between the two.
back to the drawing board boys ,no grit, not edgy enough cant they write something interesting like black gold and how its suposed to be running out of, or revamp some old folk song weve never heard of,or how females get more pissed up and violent or anything but this
@LuminousGuy this is the stranglers sound, just a different singer. Hugh would of sang this, no problem. I think you forget that the Stranglers are not just a great punk/rock band but also a great pop band. Nuff said.
I love the stranglers and know them. Paul very well he is a nice bloke but again agree with comments regarding him being the Stranglers singer. He was never a Stranglers singer but to be fair to him some songs which he wrote were very good live but poorly produced on the album etc Heaven she walks. People calling Paul a sissy is unfair. I wish Paul the best of luck in the future :)
paul roberts was the decline of the stranglers? glad hes gone, baz gives it a raw stranglers sound, like in the early days, but a bit more polished, was at glasgow concert this year, brilliant just like the old days at the apollo, magic s1v
this is a great song, great tune, great vocals and a cool guitar riff, some of the comments on this are so wide of the mark - do they have cloth ears???
Sounds ok as a stand alone song, but disappoints as a Stranglers song, however the good news is the new album is a return to Force and sounds like you would expect
Surely not their strongest period, but the weakest stranglers are much more better than such crap like My Chemical Blabla or however these New Wave boybands call themselves.
This is a fantastic song, and I completely agree with an earlier post about how amazing it is the song came out in 1997...If it was 1984, it would of been a success...It damn well should of been...
This is awful, went to see the stranglers play, everytime they played a classic there was a cheer and everyone rushed to the stage to listen, as soon as they played anything post-hugh everyone went to the bar. Says it all really.
Suite XVI bores me. It's an incredibly frustrating album as there's some tracks on it (such as unbroken and Summat) that start of well musically and then just fall apart at the chorus. At least in my opinion. Plus a lot of the songs sound very similar to things they've done much better before.
Still...if nothing else Greenfield is really on form on it. Suppose he's making up for lost time after being sidelined for most of the MK2 era...apparently.
Perhaps Roberts is a good singer, but he´s definetly not in the stranglers. They do sound like a different band, where is the good old stranglers gone???
leave paul alone people, he is only doin a job he likes! iits not his fault hugh went!!!
give the guy a break, he is brill seen him lives loads of times, and met him in person nice guy, also met hugh they r both nice men who just want to get on with live.
Oh and i love this song, cos my bestfriend died of cancer and now she walks in heaven!
I can't agree with garry1. Without cornwell it's not Stranglers any more. Roberts it's just "correct" performer, nothing more. He lacks something that cornwell has, specific way of singing, this "something" that makes him different that any other vocalist. For me - when he left the group - the story of the stranglers has over.
Same for me...they might still have the same name but it's the band itself that hold the real appeal. The original four of Cornwell, Burnel, Black and Greenfield were such a bizarre mix...yet they created musical perfection.
Nothing could even come close to topping how good they were...particularly as the guy who left was the main songwriter/singer.
Awful. As a Stranglers fan all my life I can say with happiness that Roberts and Ellis have gone. With Baz they are back on track. Long live Jet Black
brilliant stuff, roberts is a far better vocalist than cornwell ever was, with a better stage presence too...and john ellis was dynamite on guitar...written in red and about time are easily as good as black and white and the raven, and anyway, ANY line up involving JJ, jet and dave will truly deserve to be called the stranglers!
Replacement singers rarely work. Sorry, but on this Paul Roberts sounds like Noel Burke, who tragically replaced Ian McCulloch in Echo and the Bunnymen in the early 1990's. Having said that, things came together for the Stranglers with Norfolk Coast, and they were brilliant live at that time. And then Paul Roberts walked. Eh?
It is a sad fact thou that i have NEVER seen this video with out the "vh1" logo....like most of the mark II songs and singles For example.. the video for golden boy or heaven and hell. These has never been a collection , which i think is a shame.
love this song and video, stranglers are brill, even more brill live, no 1 can beat them playin live! paul roberts is lush lol but then again so is JJB and Hugh cornwell mmmmmm very nice
I've always hated everything I've heard the Stranglers do with Paul Roberts, but I've never seen this video before, and if I don't think of it as The Stranglers, I quite like it!
I like it.

And, by the way, Writen In Red and About Time are their two best works. My personal opinion...

"offerUcannot", you are right, Paul has a good voice but not for the stranglers.
BottomBoosh, again I agree: Baz has a better voice for this band... By the way, to me there are TWO bands:
"The Stranglers IV" , and "The Stranglers" which counts from the moment Hugh left the band in 1990.
Now, with Baz they are sounding good again, but it is just not the same level.
