My xterra does that.. I thought it was odd. From the looks of it I'll be getting rid of this pretty soon. Bought it back in July on the 27th. I've already had to replace the rad, which was out of my own pocket and now I'll have to replace the tranny as well. I have extended warranty on that though. So far I'm out fo $1500 and owe less than 10k.. wtf.
My soon to be ex has this issue with her 3.5 SL Altima. $2000 to fix.....This can be a sales killer for Nissan if they don't offer to fix the issue via Recall or make some kind of arrangement. This is a material/design deficiency.
@ulovegoats I am a master tech for nissan(20yrs) and the flat rate(warranty) job to repair this is 4.6hrs labour time. 2 small tensioner shoes and 2 secondary chains. Its a problem with the edges of the chain(sharp)wear the plastic chain guide. The warranty is covered under the 5yr or 100 000km(60 000mile) so get it in to the dealer today! and say you have a whining noise under the hood! and get the repair
That sucks! My 05 Frontier is approaching 30k and has yet to develop this whine. It seems they will all have this problem eventually. Timing chain tensioners (plastic) wear then it the chain is riding on metal! TSB already out on it but you have to wait for the problem for Nissan to repair it under the powertrain warranty (5 year/60k). Alot of complaints on Nissan/Frontier forums about this...

Nissan says that about 89,000 to 90,000 is where the Xterra/Frontier engines give out in the timing mechanism. It's about $1500 to fix.

some wear out and some never will...
I've seen 300k out of the VG40 and no issues at all.

my ford makes this noise. It's annoying as all hell. Does the sound go away once the motor is warmed up?
