Generally a tsunami doesn't slow down before it reaches a coastline, it may look like a normal wave or nothing at all in the middle of the atlantic. When it comes closer to the shore it becomes larger... Sheesh... O.e

@TroubleMaker4625 Technically the Cannary islands are African, but belongs to Spain so they are "European". It is like Madeira Islands, they are in Afirca but they belong to Portugal. Or Falklands islands in South America, but european because they belong to UK.

In this case of Mega-tsunami, America will not suffer so much! America have 8 hours to rescue millions. I think it is enough time to prevent millions of deaths. In the other side, Portugal has less than 2 hours to rescue 7.6 million people living in the coast line (including me)!! And Morocco has less time to rescue so many too... and people living in Caribbean islands don't have any chance! What a catastrophe!!!

I'm a proud American, but our government is not known for it's efficiency and rapidity in response when faced with disaster.

These people have almost nothing but speculation about what might happen to support this whole alarm scenario. There has not been one of these within recorded history; I think they ignore a lot of engineering, mainly about how a landslide like this would couple with an ocean to create really deep ocean Rayleigh waves. They ignore the effect of 4000 miles of 2D scattering and damping. None of them are engineers. That ridiculously small rock-box experiment has been extrapolated out of all meaning.

@puncheex Yes there has been many of these within recorded history. Lituya Bay, Alaska, 1958: Landslide caused by an earthquake made a megatsunami 1,700 feet high, the highest ever recorded.
1963 Italy, wave 820 feet high went over Vajont Dam and destroyed villages below. Also the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption landslide into Spirit Lake made a megatsunami 853 feet high.

@OlderG0ds: Oh, I'm convinced that tsunamis in an enclosed water space can be devastating. The Lituya Bay demonstrated that, but it also demonstrated that once the water entered the deep ocean just outside the bay the waves damped down to less than three feet high. In this case an area the size of the Black Sea might be considered enclosed; the sheer volume of water is not that great.

@LeBrickLames : You think maybe the references above about Lituya Bay was just a coincidence? Of course there was a 500 meter wave inside the bay as a result of a landslide. You can google it and find all sorts of geological conjecture and even models that show what happened. The point is that extending that model to a landslide into the deep ocean, at least as simplified as it is in the BBC SuperTsunami program, is full of scientific & engineering holes.

You're right. I read the megatsunami will "just" be about 60 feet high when it reaches the US east coast - but still, that's more than enough to cause insane amounts of damage and death.
The TV guys always like to overdo fearful predictions, that's part of their job.
