When I first saw this episode on the Old School DVD sets (I was born in 1980 so my era was around 81-89) it appeared to me that they used Big Bird here before they completely fleshed him out. In fact the Sesame Street Muppets' appearances in the first episode reminded me of when the Simpsons started out on Tracey Ullman, how primitive they looked at first.

The thing about the original Big Bird was that he wasn't really intended to be a 6 year-old, he was meant to be more of the doofus you see in this clip.
