  • what kind of whistle is that?

  • @Rdgrail original 5 chime

  • what did this explosion change???

  • @imagreatbigman new FRA guidelines to locomotive boilers

  • Ya can't just fire up the engine everyday, and expect it to do it's job. These engines needed extreme care back in the day, the care needed now has risen because of the engines, as they begin to become more antique. Such a fabulous engine, what a way to go. This engine was owned by Steamtown originally, right?

  • @indie1361 Yes, then Gettysburg bought it.

  • @indie1361 yes and then it was traded for their current canadian national locomotive.

  • Oh wow, that air compressor just sounds murdered.

  • @LNERMallard ws there even a fireman or was the engineer doing double duty?

  • Both my dad and grandfather both being very big railfans, I can listen to this engines and tell it has serious problems. Taken care of and maintaing properly steam engines are majestic beautys, improperly maintained they are DEATH TRAPS WAITING TO HAPPEN!!!

  • I think the Hydrostatic lubricator is just for show, I don't think its actually doing anything. We do that every morning when I work, check and service the hydrostatic, and make sure it actually works.

and the most important part of steaming up in the morning for me, check your water, check you water glass, blow them out, check them again, test the valves, check the glass, MAKE SURE THEY WORK

  • It doesn't take a railroad employee to be able to tell that that air compressor either needs oil or a complete rebuild! A steam locomotive is better dry and cold than in the hands of a railroad that subjects it to the abuse of improper maintenance!

  • what year did 76 last run in?? cause by 1989 1278 was the new starter?? explain it to me please. i know how the boiler blew up, but im still trying to find out the answer

  • @Strasburg1991 You're question/statement does't make sense. The 1278 has not operated since the boiler blew in 1995.

  • @yourweathertodayHD i meant 76. when has 76 last operated??

  • Gettysburg railroad still has engine problems, there are several accounts of their diesels catching fire, and that steam engine that blew sky high.

  • Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Always seemed to ride behind the 2-8-0 76 whenever we visited.

  • Interesting FRA report on the incident ww w.ntsb.gov/publictn/1996/sir9605.pdf

  • Its good to see som running footage of the 1278.

I pray that JJ gets her up and running in the near future.

  • @Rockinrailroader765 he will. as soon as the roundhouse, and the other steamersr return to operation. I believe what 1278 needs is just a new crownsheet and/or firebox
