Hi Craig. I purchased the XLR version, and I didn't realize that I needed additional stuff. Is there a way I can buy something for it that can plug into my computer?
If you'd like to listen a whole album recorded with this great little mic, look after alinedelimadotcom/musica >> and listen to the album "Maritima" (all percussions, vocals, accordeon were recorded with this mic and it sounds very professional.
So if I get the XLR version, and then a phantom power, am I able to plug it in to my laptop and record? Can I still edit my stuff with for example GarageBand? sorry im a virgin at this :(
Hi Craig, awesome review with details! I am very new to this. What I want is a decent microphone that I can use to record cover my songs on to the computer. Do you think this is a good choice for me?
Hi, great review. One question though. Could I plug the mic into a small phantom power supply (without a mixer) such as the behringer one and then have that plug directly to usb on my computer? Or do I need something such as the m-box?
Thank you! I was wondering what was wrong, because I had all the cables plugged in and everything and no sound was being recorded. Now I know that I need a phantom power supply thing or whatever, which one would you reccomend? Best quality for lowest price?
@YungPoloKidz901 Little bit of top end and some compression will get you there. Maybe some bottom end but not much. It depends on what you want and our voice.
you answered all my questions that no one else seemed to answer:) thank you so much. i have the M-AUDIO mobilePre (the upgraded version of the M-AUDIO you showed) i was very confused if i needed a separate preamp or not. Thanks again.
Hi Craig i ve got a question, i wanna use my laptop doing some sort of singing, and i have a USB sound card(creative sound blaster x-fi 1080) does mxl 990 usb model can connect usb sound card?
Would you recommend getting a new internal soundcard, a mixer like the MultiMix 4 or a microphone like the 990? They all cost about the same here in Sweden. Today I'm using a Creative X-Fi card and a Steelseries headset and get alot of noise when recording. I would like a new microphone but then there is the problem with a faulty soundcard.
I was looking for microphones for recording, as has been producing beats for some time. I started looking for videos on the internet about condenser microphones did not find many more in Portuguese. I watched some videos do not get their much loved (do not speak English) and thanks to the translator than youtube understood a little and bought the microphone, thank you.
Hello, great video as usual, I am buying this microphone soon but something off topic which is on my mind is recording, not audio but video. I see you are recording the video straight to your pc. Are you using a webcam or a camera etc to do this? If you are using a camera, how because I am also buying a camcorder to record with but I'm trying to find a better way than recording both separately then syncing them.
Hi Craig, im 14 years old and i want to record songs on the computer but on the usb microphone you said you cant record songs. I was wondering if i could download any instrumental songs and sing to. Could i be able to do that?
thank you so much man. this is the best and most thorough review i have seen about anything haha. this really helps and MXL should call you back because you do great reviews. thanks again!
Preamp suggestion: Golden age pre 73. Its a clone of the old neve 1073s and honestly it sounds like peaches and cream. Its pretty cheap too, a bit over $300
@DJiceage666 sounds like the preamp has gone in your desk. Have you tried other faders? Still nothing? Then phantom power maybe on but not properly powering the mic. Have you tried another xlr lead?
@robinjuste76 Yes I use the compressor on the mixing desk. It's just a limiter mostly. I also use a small amount of EQ, bit at the top and bottom, but very little. Everyone's voice is different. For vocals, I would not use any EQ, but probably still a bit of compression.
@CraigTube Does that make a difference, because I just spent $200 on this mic and a mixer because of this video, and it sounds GOD AWFUL. It picks up my roommate downstairs talking (with my door in my room closed), cars that drive by, and just about any other little noise, I was on the other side of the room and you could hear me breathing. I'd be disappointed if a compressor was the reason yours sounds the way it does and you pretty much neglected to mention it in your video.
great vid. We use the same the yahama mixer but I still can't get my mxl to work. Phantom power is on, mic is plugged in and the channel is on but I'm still getting nothing. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks!
hey craig.geat video man.hey i was wondering do you do your show on monday nights.i work nights so i cant cath your show on friday anymore but was wondering if you do won on mondays.
Craig, that was a fantastic explanation and review. I have the same mic but am experiencing hardware noise in my recordings. I need to get myself a usb interface, M-Audio or Behringer. Nice work!
I use a USB condenser mic and can mix music. You can do this by using a computer based mixer. I do believe though the phanton power supply version does have better quality. I have no idea why?
Nice informative video, I just wanted to mention that the Alesis USB multi-mix 4 mixer is the exact board I use on all my broadcasts, coupled with the MXL-990 of course, heh heh. Cheers!
I was given a 990 today and have watched 3 of your vids on it now incl. the MWS cover (sent chills down my spine btw). I haven't watched any of the brewing vids yet, but I like your style here... I've been recording for over 10 years and should know about phantom power - at 1 point I did but with the amount I absorb on many different subjects sometimes it can be in 1 ear out the other. Lucky for me I just need the XLR cable and I'm set. I hope mine will sound as great with my voice. Sub'd!
Are you aware that there are a TON of virtual mixers out there that can do all actually hardware can do and more all on your computer?

I can recommend all the M-Audio audio-cards for use with pod casting (kinda like craig) or for a recording studio (like i use them for).
Take a look at the SE Electronics 2200 A microphone, which is a great condencer.
