@quintas73 I must have missed the memo when I posted this 3 years ago. I'm sorry you've been so inconvenienced, does your finger hurt from hitting the mute button once?
@byebyenow1 yea you need to explode up at the end but u xan be to low but wht u dont know is tht these guys are strong as shit and tht helps and if u go to low u loss speed
@byebyenow1 Honestly, everyone has different techniques and different approaches to how they throw. But IMO, squatting that low can really throw you off and you probably won't get too much momentum.
I think your coach is trying to teach you how to maximize your angular momentum. Look how figure skaters do their spins. If you start spinning from a low position then most of you body weight(you ass) is further away from the axis and if you push up, then that mass will "accelerate" your spinning and thus you discus because angular momentum must remain the same.
@SubAverageGamer When i was in u17's i threw roughly 35-36, so considering you only just started i would say it is quite impressive. Keep it up and you'll improve.

I love how Tammert throws , it looks almost effortless , he has rly nice and cool technique :D, but sadly he doesn't have much strength anymore for big throws :(
@caspar7b Tammert has very good tech, I remember reading an article somewhere saying it was one of the best in the world and better than Kanter's, but Kanter has more explosiveness. Tammert's rhythm is amazing.
@byebyenow1 He is right! THese guys just have so much more torque and speed. If you watch and compare the 2 throwers #11 Frantz Kruger in this video, and watch, Ian Waltz, you'll see how one of em don't use their legs(Frantz Kruger) And how one uses explosivnes in their hips and legs(Ian Waltz)
@byebyenow1 hes right. You never want to get so low that arent able to explode up. If you get that low, it will screw up your technique and really bad. But the throwers above obviously have a lot of weight in their upper bodies., therefor, they arent able to squat as low as possible
@byebyenow1 You should be squat ..ish to start with then make an almost leaping motion to the middle. Remember ** 9 o'clock Drop** spin on the ball of the foot. stay close to the ground. Think of it like you are leaping into your puch at first. You will find that this slingshots or whip your uper body. Also this will help teach you to use your legs not your arms. Then use the momentum to orbit through your punch. Keep the disc Low... high.. low.. high with the tilt of your body. Detail is key!
@byebyenow1 your coach isnt of base, but i dont believe in the "sitting in a chair" spin. That is more of a shot put spin. All your technique needs to consist of is explosive hip movement and clean, a smooth flowing spin. A good thing to do is get a rhythm or a habbit. watch most of these guys. just before they throw, they toss or handle the disc in some "personal" way. This helps get you in the proper technique that you have been practicing. Be consistent, your throw is "your throw" Good Luck

byebyenow u dont have to be in the squat position when ur in ur wind up u get down in it in ur power position. im tellin u the truth i was ranked # 1 in the nation for 2 years straight when i was younger im 13 now
@byebyenow1 The squat position is never optimal in terms of throwing... Never do you want to get that low. You should get low, but comfortably so. If you're so low that you feel unable to push, then you're in a bad position. Find a comfort zone.
@Beruur1 Throwing shoes are a must-have. You'll never be able to properly execute technique without them. That said, they take getting used to, so you probably shouldn't buy them right before your next meet.
@f1uckingretard this guys is right, its totally worth it excpet you have to get used to them, when i got my first and last pair(bought them for this season) they had this breaking line right where your toes start, first two weeks its gonna make bottom of your feet sore but then you can where then just like any other shoes but not longer then a practice for 2 hours because they might leave permanent bent marks in your feet and it will hurt when the age reaches you. good luck buddy!
@Beruur1 i got a pair this year and i love them...yes they do take awhile to get used to but they have made a huge difference in my throwing...ive gone from 6ths and 5ths to golds and silvers...
i know this is bad but im in 8th grade and i have a problem throwing discus, i throw 100 but when i do my spins i tend to put my arm down and it does not go as far, is there a way that i can train myself to stop that or should i just focus solely on keeping my hand up and straight?
does anyone have any tips to develope explosiveness for shot and disc i can only throw 40ft and 110ft and ive got that far by brute strength but i really need help with my speed.
now some one help me with this... a kid who last yr as a 8th grader threw 199;8 and pissed everyone off...now a freshman in highschool throws 160... oh well...the kid has talent... its all tech he says
@theepicninjamoose at a recent meet my son was in, a 7th grade girl threw in the 90's. SHe must have spent endless hours on such a smooth move in the ring. She will be a local force if she stays with it. Finally got my son interested in it. I have spent most of the time on good front throws. He is not overly motivated but getting there. He threw 64 feet from the front of the ring for his first measured throw ever. He has thrown in the 70's in practice all standing front throws. more work to come
@rushfan9thcmd There is a girl who goes to my school, who set our district record for throwing discus. She threw it 123' 8". It's like she was born to do this. I'm sure your son will improve and be confident in his throwing.
@Cooldude0027 I had the girls class wrong she is in 8th grade. She threw 108 last Sat and won the sectional and qualified for the Ill state meet. As for my son, he threw 66 from the front of the ring. It was only his 3rd meet. This summer will be learning to spin. As for the shot, after we got back from that sectional meet, I aksed him if was interested in learning the spin for the shot. He said ok.I showed him a 3/4 move. He went to our county meet Monday and threw 19 something...continued
@Cooldude0027 SO we figured to try the spin Monday because he had nothing to lose. He spun 3 times and did so under control without scratching or throwing foul. He likes it. No oneelse did a spin move. I hope he keeps this motivation so he can get better this summer. His season is over but he is still going out to throw, a good sign. Much confidence too. He did the 3 successful spins after only working with it a day and a half. He may be the only 8th grade spinner next year.
@theepicninjamoose That is rather good. I'm in 8th grade and today my track team went to our district finals. I ended up throwing 116ft 3.5 inches. Last year my PR was only 86ft 7 inches. I'm thinking that if that 7th grader you saw wants to keep going, he'll be amazing when his body starts hitting it's peak performance in the next couple of years.
@theepicninjamoose There is a seventh grader at my school who can stand from the front and thow 110...he cant spin but i wish i could have been where he is now...just like the 8th graders from a neighboring school that are throwing 145...
@theepicninjamoose (Not to brag) but go to eliteyouth(dot)come and its a national ranking system for the junior olympics if you wanna see some really impressive marks, the top mark for 13-14 is 166!!!!!

I love throwing events in track, im a big guy, 15 years old, six three, 270 (gonna be honest not all muscle) and running is totally out of the question. Im built for comfort not speed XD I throw fairly far, at least i think so, small school so we haven't measured all year.
P.S. Awesome vid gonna keep watching and see if I can mimic these guys techniques.
@bzach71 Thanks! The feed for shot put was incomplete so that's a no go. I did do one for hammer that was taken down, I may decide at some point to try it again without music, and I don't remember what the case was with javelin.
My coach said that i can get back to trowing like i used to by fixing my hips because i wasn't turning them or my foot in my power position. but now she said my problem is my release. any tips?
i had a problem with my release too i was throwing it and the discus would "shake" or fly like a very Fd up spaceship a friend told me to hold my thumb down while i threw kind of like when you do the loser sign with your fingers in an L shape and that fixed it completely try it it may be ur case may not be. @catbyte911 i
i just found a discus in my highschool's park... i threw it 329'4" with only one finger.. also a shotput fell from the sky and i decided to throw aswell.. i threw that about 94'1"... should i compete in track and field? or are those distances no good?..... hows that for a youtube claim
im a sophomore and just started track and field this is my fifth week doing it, my shot put is 44 11/2 and my discus is 137. Is that good for a sophmore who just started.. i just need some advice?? Because idk if i should stick to this sport.
@willman1661 Watch as much video as possible, but make sure it's elite throwers so you get the right ideas. Kanter is a great example of how to throw discus. While you're watching, pay attention to the legs more so than the arms - your leg movement will ultimately be more important. This is the case will all throwing events.
@f1uckingretard lol, you can only learn so much by watching... the best way to learn is to practice as much as possible. keep the thumb pointed 60 degrees and let it fly
@willman1661 although ther're boring, start a routine of at least pressing 5, hip snapping 5, and South African 5 before getting to full spin. it really helps with technique
@willman1661 check out "erikcadee" here on YouTube. He has amazing videos in HD of his throws in slo-mo. I am a thrower myslef and it's mostly about technique.
@willman1661 watch adam setliff, and, if you want to keep your weight on your left out of the back instead of shifting, watch powell and washington. setliff really is a great technician; however, you may have to slow him down because he does come out of the back like a bat out of hell. also, silvester would be a great choice. stay away from alekna and fazekas because without steroids, those guys are 180 foot throwers. setliff and washington never touched that stuff, which is why they're forty+
@willman1661 and still huge, and they haven't gotten fat or skinny even though they don't work out anymore. they did it the right way, so their technique really is the best in the world, especially because washington only trained three days a week because of his full time job. according to setliff, the two best disc throwers of all time go 1. washington 2. setliff. they did it the right way and still managed to beat the roided up freaks.
@willman1661 also watch Bowman's videos they are really good, train your whole body, not just your arm, and take a day or 2 to work on tec. and in no time you should be throwing 100's pretty easy
@RiseOfAnarchy34 As a lefty myself, I agree it's a challenge. But, success requires attention to detail, and doing the translation from right to left-handed forces you to pay attention. So use the lefty advantage and good luck.
@toplgun1000 There's nothing wrong with that. To me, the best way to improve distance is to be realistic about where you are, dream where you want to go, get some help figuring out what it takes to get there, then do the work.
Im not a Discus expert... But i can say that if you just get the discus to roll out of your hand the right way (make it roll from your index finger, NOT repeat NOT from your little finger or any other finger) and learn the south american turn (just walk one step forward and turn) you should come up to some 20-25 m.
If you want to get better than that, join some athletics club :D
im amazed on how far these guys can throw. i have only seen one thrower in really life throw a discus 205 feet and that looked inreadible far. i can't image what a 220 or 230 feet looks like. there all increadible atheles
I can never find a high point when my right foot touches down at the middle of the ring... My throwing arm never reaches its peak... I think it can add 10-20 feet on my throws and im already in Elite Discus thrower in the nation... But even the best need help... Someone comment
Check out discus throw in wiki Virgilijus Alekna is second best planet thrower through the whole history that people saw... ;) his best score 73.88 m (242 ft 4 in) if he had throwed 20cm more he would have done planet record
Technique is by far the greater factor. If you're strong but use only your upper body you will never throw as far as someone who is weaker but uses their entire body. Hitting the weights will give you easy distance, so it too is important, but not nearly as much. If you can't properly appropriate your potential energy, much of it will be lost instead of translating to the kinetic energy of the implement, which is your goal - efficient body mechanics (basically synonymous with technique).
@f1uckingretard True but without strength the teqnique goes to waste.. a stronger person will beat a weak person with technique but a strong person will lose to a strong person with technique.
Thanks for the post... this will really help me, I have been using a halfspin because I can't really understand the fullspin, now maybe I can get over a hundred
Yeeah! I know kanter. We Live at same city and sometimes when im training discus he comes too and little bit helps me with my techniques. His Really Good!! WE LOVE HIM HERE AT ESTONIA!!!!!!

MegaPillowman 11 months ago
Great VId....can u make similar vid for shotput, javelin and hammer as well..?
bzach71 11 months ago
@bzach71 Thanks! The feed for shot put was incomplete so that's a no go. I did do one for hammer that was taken down, I may decide at some point to try it again without music, and I don't remember what the case was with javelin.

is it me or does Kanter look crazy?

My coach said that i can get back to trowing like i used to by fixing my hips because i wasn't turning them or my foot in my power position. but now she said my problem is my release. any tips?
catbyte911 11 months ago
i had a problem with my release too i was throwing it and the discus would "shake" or fly like a very Fd up spaceship a friend told me to hold my thumb down while i threw kind of like when you do the loser sign with your fingers in an L shape and that fixed it completely try it it may be ur case may not be. @catbyte911 i

I'm a freshman and this is my first year in track and field. Anyone have any tips for n00b discus throwers?
willman1661 1 year ago
@willman1661 Watch as much video as possible, but make sure it's elite throwers so you get the right ideas. Kanter is a great example of how to throw discus. While you're watching, pay attention to the legs more so than the arms - your leg movement will ultimately be more important. This is the case will all throwing events.
f1uckingretard 1 year ago 9
@f1uckingretard lol, you can only learn so much by watching... the best way to learn is to practice as much as possible. keep the thumb pointed 60 degrees and let it fly
marlo916 11 months ago
@willman1661 yea, get big son
mattDsaNdmAn 1 year ago
@willman1661 technique is most important, even more then strenght.
NoobsSuckx7 11 months ago
@willman1661 although ther're boring, start a routine of at least pressing 5, hip snapping 5, and South African 5 before getting to full spin. it really helps with technique
Matt2steppinMcGee 11 months ago
@willman1661 check out "erikcadee" here on YouTube. He has amazing videos in HD of his throws in slo-mo. I am a thrower myslef and it's mostly about technique.
chknboirocks 11 months ago
@willman1661 watch adam setliff, and, if you want to keep your weight on your left out of the back instead of shifting, watch powell and washington. setliff really is a great technician; however, you may have to slow him down because he does come out of the back like a bat out of hell. also, silvester would be a great choice. stay away from alekna and fazekas because without steroids, those guys are 180 foot throwers. setliff and washington never touched that stuff, which is why they're forty+
tapiston32 11 months ago
@willman1661 and still huge, and they haven't gotten fat or skinny even though they don't work out anymore. they did it the right way, so their technique really is the best in the world, especially because washington only trained three days a week because of his full time job. according to setliff, the two best disc throwers of all time go 1. washington 2. setliff. they did it the right way and still managed to beat the roided up freaks.
tapiston32 11 months ago
@willman1661 also watch Bowman's videos they are really good, train your whole body, not just your arm, and take a day or 2 to work on tec. and in no time you should be throwing 100's pretty easy
funnyman2009 11 months ago
@willman1661 keep your hand flat, gravity will hold it in your hand

I feel so lonely being a lefty and not seeing any lefties on here.
Those judges in the field have some balls to be out were the discs are flying.
RiseOfAnarchy34 1 year ago
@RiseOfAnarchy34 As a lefty myself, I agree it's a challenge. But, success requires attention to detail, and doing the translation from right to left-handed forces you to pay attention. So use the lefty advantage and good luck.

@toplgun1000 im in 7th and about can reach that but im also over sized....
southern2333 1 year ago
@toplgun1000 There's nothing wrong with that. To me, the best way to improve distance is to be realistic about where you are, dream where you want to go, get some help figuring out what it takes to get there, then do the work.

how can i do to improve?
i have a competition on 14th dec.......
i dont want to lose.....
im 15 and i throw 17m<<<(just simply stand and throw....no one teaches me....)
i hope i can improve within 3 days
plz help.....
clarksalvatore 1 year ago
@clarksalvatore
Im not a Discus expert... But i can say that if you just get the discus to roll out of your hand the right way (make it roll from your index finger, NOT repeat NOT from your little finger or any other finger) and learn the south american turn (just walk one step forward and turn) you should come up to some 20-25 m.
If you want to get better than that, join some athletics club :D

do you guys believe distance comes more from technique or strength?
swagger01 1 year ago
Technique is by far the greater factor. If you're strong but use only your upper body you will never throw as far as someone who is weaker but uses their entire body. Hitting the weights will give you easy distance, so it too is important, but not nearly as much. If you can't properly appropriate your potential energy, much of it will be lost instead of translating to the kinetic energy of the implement, which is your goal - efficient body mechanics (basically synonymous with technique).
f1uckingretard 1 year ago
@f1uckingretard True but without strength the teqnique goes to waste.. a stronger person will beat a weak person with technique but a strong person will lose to a strong person with technique.
xXDAMEDXx 1 year ago
@xXDAMEDXx That's true to an extent, but the balance is in favor of technique significantly.
