The technology that is used today to record songs has taken all the energy and feeling out of music. Same song recorded over 30 years apart and the song from the 70s has the feeling and energy that technology can't duplicate. That's what we get for allowing rap artists to dictate technology.
great stuff. one thought tho........people (properly) praising Wolf for his bass playing on the new 2012 version of this - but hey, Mike A doing a fierce job here in 76. Why can't we praise both of them?
they put little bits and pieces of some of thier old songs into the new ones, that only true fans would point out....or just cynical assholes that think they couldnt come up with anything....
@HardKore5250 because of egos and musical differences but after all the years Van Halen is back together, but with Eddie's son on bass. I heard them live a few weeks ago and they didn't sound quite as good as they do here.
it's gonna be on A Different Kind of Truth! Too bad it'll be different though.....but that riff definitely became "Mean Street" on Fair Warning. No doubt about it at all.
THIS SONG ROCKS HARD....HOWEVER, IF THEY WERE DEBATING WHETHER TO "KEEP" THIS VS MEAN STREET (DUE TO THAT SIGNATURE RIFF), IM GLAD THEY KEPT MEAN STREET...
so far all new songs rock!!!! dave, eddie,and alex,are what im paying for.you can stick a 5 year old with a banjo as the bassist and van halen will still rock
VH Freak since the late 70's early 80's still a great song and seen them live many times and thank God Dave came back..2007..being a Guitarist EVH is one of my heroes of course but Randy Rhoads is still king..anyway my point it's still not the REAL VH without Michael Anthony..sorry..don't understand why? I figure Eddie wanted his son in and that was part of the "Dave reunion deal".read Roths book 1997 they've been trying to get rid of Michael for a long time..but most of boys are back!!!!
The current version of this song is different. It's sung differently, has different lyrics, different bass parts, completely different mid and solo section. It kind of like the difference between the House of Pain from the Gene Simmon's demo and 1984.
..it is new bcuz its never been on a vh album..they put a twist on the chain and made it a new song theheetmizer....vh rulz rock again yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
This is awesome, thanks for posting.!! this scares me too, cause you can really feel that energy on this tune from 36 years ago, the only thing that scares me is they obviously took the best part of it out (mean streets) & they're trying to pass it off as new material on the new album.

K, so I'll update my statement. They re-recorded at least 9 of the 13 songs on the new album.

mkeane442 2 weeks ago
@mkeane442
On the internet. Just type in ZERO DEMOS (it's a BOOTLEG). Then you DOWNLOAD it. If you don't know how to do that, ask someone younger than you.

I prefer this version over the new one... the lyrics on the new one don't really fit.

i totally agree ma dude.. there's just something the old vh had that can never be duplicated. raw genius cannot be substituted for anything.

Not just the lyrics. DAMN, listen to his VOCALS here. It KILLS the new vocals.
Danimal77 2 weeks ago
@Danimal77 And the lyrics are much better here.

@TheMrDmandude If they're club songs weren't as successful as they wanted them to be, why not recycle the kick ass riffs right?
t3hPoundcakeHD 3 weeks ago
@TheMrDmandude
NO, they actually RE-RECORDED at least 5 songs. Not just bits and pieces. WHOLE songs that were FAR better in 1976/1977 than they are today.

Why the band break up if they make so good music?

This song should be a new theme song for Wonder Woman because it sounds similar to the TV series theme song.

This sounds like a slower version of I'm The One's main riff. Well, doesn't just sound like it. It is, with different fills.

@SLAYERMETALLICA357 Is the studio version of the new version out? All I've heard is the live thing from the club where you can't hear Dave. :(

@horrorview Yeah all I've heard is the Club Wha version thing too.
From what I can hear from it, Daves voice doesn't sound nearly as good as this.
