This is about right for a Metallica tempo. They just hold chords longer. Tuning down a whole step makes everything chunkier that way. As far as I know they play it a half step up live now.

It is caused by adrnilin.If it is before an auidence of 100 or 10,000 (I have done Both lol) The only way to totally stop from doing it is to use a click track as most drummers do in the studio (necessary evil. you don't realize live how often you speed up or slow down). In a live Rock Concert you just get so pumped you speed up. I have been playing over 20 years but still do it to some extent.
