The pioneers exceeded all expectations regarding lifespan. Noone had dreamed they would last as long as they did, and gather as much information.
I have an old book about astronomy I bought as a boy. It is full of pictures of Jupiter, taken by Pioneer 10 and 11. In those days noone had seen anything like it! :o)
Quite an achievement from a small probe of 250 kg, filled with circuits and instruments from the sixties, powered by a 150 w power-supply, considerably less than what a modern PC has.
@Gtacriminalrussia They did not really die they just lost contact with us and in most likely in less then 10 years Voyager 1 and 2 will be lost from us to but still will be out there when earth is gone.
Pioneer 10 (Original) & SkySights > Very nice. I hope you don't mind, I've added it to my playlist "Space.. The Final Frontier - Astronomy Documentaries" ( play_list?p=AB52E4593C047A17 ) and "Moon Landing & Space Exploration" ( play_list?p=5FC921CD9A999EA3 ) . Its the sort of song that puts everything else into perspective ... I wonder where Pioneer 10 is right now ... Somewhere in the Oort cloud maybe? Many Thanks, Runi Toconillo
Nice to find this.

It is 102 AU's from the sun, heading for the star Aldeberan. It will be near there in about 2-million years!

I can't help noticing that it's, like, not spinning.
