  • To be fair this is a junk song : they put even a bit of country music into, just to make this entry more awful ;-) !

And what about the lyrics ? Just listen to them : as silly & stupid as in a Dolly Parton's yawn !! ^^ Hahaha How could such a crap get a 2n place ? Mistery ....

  • They where good singers, the only critic I have is the name of the group, they better had called it a total other name. The changing just with a extra word "new "I find not respectful to the Seekers that group was original.

  • How the HELL did this song not win, when four years later the stinking Brotherhood of man won, who the hell were the judges here?

  • Wow. Remember this like it was yesterday!

  • The New Seekers should have won the contest! This song and the band are amazing and Peter Doyle is just super awesome!

  • Peter Doyle was the voice of TNS and will always will be !!!!!

  • @roebst Lyn was always the voice

  • I love you Peter and i love this song - happy memories of innocent times

  • Great song for Eurovision - I remember this well from my childhood as it got heavy airplay here.

  • Gosh, I did like the New Seekers in those days and thought that Peter Doyle was just so handsome!!

  • The best song never to win Eurovision, other than Riverdance, only joking, but I have great memories of this song and the New Seekers.

  • I don't think "we wuz robbed" in the sense of the sort of bloc voting which has made Eurovision a waste of time entering these days; just think (as did the French family I was staying with at the time) that this was the best song on the night. Apres toi was good but not stand-out good; in my opinion.

  • Lyn Paul ( the lady in the pink dress) was one of the first people to appear in Corornation Streets first episode. She was one of the young children playing outside Florrie Lindleys shop in the very first scene.

  • Apologies to all. Have only found out that Peter Doyle has died (RIP). His music lives on.

  • did not realise at the time just how good this song was and how well it was sung. Hope they are all still alive, well and enjoying their music.

  • what a vintage era for eurovision especially 70-76 , probably the best song never to win eurovision?

  • I really doubt if any Eurovision entry before or after has had such an intricate, multi-layered vocal.

  • Checked Husky's Songs of Praise. It definitely anticipates Abba and Teach-In in 74 and 75, but I'm not quite sure it is as strong as those winning entries. Maybe the New Seekers could have pulled it off with a bit more energy. Not sure. I'll let others decide. I still think Vicky Leandros' Apres Toi is a classic that would have taken some beating.

  • Europe didn't hate us (as much) back then. They sang this really well, better than the the recorded version possibly! If they'd put as much effort in to Roy Wood's Songs Of Praise in the UK's final selection, we would have won. Take a look at a a group called Husky on YouTube & see how they handled it to give you some idea of what could have been.

  • Will people please leave off the predictable 'we wuz robbed' line. I like this song BUT Apres Toi by Vicky Leandros is a high quality song in any company. If Europe hates us a) why did this come second and not last; and b) how on earth did the oompah rubbish of Puppet on a String - which Sandie Shaw herself disowned - beat Vicky Leandros; seriously good Love is Blue a few years earlier? I still say that Cliff should have won in '68 and The Shadows in '75 mind.

  • The two birds in The New Seekers - Ms Eve Graham and Ms Lyn Paul - were eminently shaggable back in May, 1972 (almost 40 yrs ago now ...... gosh) !!

  • This really deserved to win

  • having already made it to the top of the hit parade, teaching the world to sing, europe were not about to let these stars to shine, an obvious winner best uk entry ever...

  • Your mind plays tricks, doesn't it? This was much, much better than I remember it, and what an excellent performance!

  • Best UK entry ever.

  • Lush ............

as we said in those days

  • Love the hair styles !!

  • This is fantastic. What happened to this lot, like?

  • Should have pulled out about 1990 and stopped insulting our rich heritage by making arses of ourselves. We once ruled the pop/rock world and still had enough left over to do the business at Eurovision. Now we're crap at both.

  • Fantastic song by brilliant group, came 2nd to a good winner Luxembourg. This was when the UK was in rich vein of form, never being outside the top 4 from 67 - 77.

Those were the days.....as the 1970 UK entrant once sang!

  • What?

  • Nowadays Eurovision is like a bad joke.

  • Think we need to go back to these days at the Eurovision, No dancers mincing in the background of gimmicks. After all it's a song contest, which got lost along the way a long time ago.

  • @thatsme1945

And- most importantly- no playback, but performed totally live by a high quality pop orchestra like here.

  • Couldn't beat the lovely Vicky Leandros with "Apres Toi" getting her own back after being beaten by Sandie Shaw in 1967 although her song, " L'Amour est Bleu", was better.

  • Now,THAT was how it was done.Eurocrap is a pale, poor version now.The New Seekers were always a joy to watch/listen to & Lynn Paul & Eve Graham two of the classiest female vocalists the UK had.Yup,the 70s was definitely the decade for music.

  • Perfect pop, best UK entry bar none

  • I'd love to see this sort of thing again someday only without the ironic sneering at it and a few dead bodies thrown in for goood measure officer

  • politics went against the seakers, streets in front of anyone else, arguably our best effort ever..

  • It came 2nd for those that don't know.

  • Peter Doyle had THE VOICE r.i.p.

  • This was a triumph- Vicky Leandros gave all cabaret singers a wonderful ballad and deserved her win, but this song somehow hits you with its zest and tunefulness. Lovely to think that when the original group split they remained friends. Who wouldn't fall in love with Lyn Paul and Eve Graham.

  • shaged em all

  • Can't believe this song finished back in 5th place, shows how high standards were back then

  • @dimgwalltameiben: 2nd. They finished 2nd.

  • Not by a long mile one of my favourite groups, but good god! This is all live: live orchestra and live vocals - I mean, *listen* to those harmonies! Amazing.

  • Just a fantastic song and performance!

  • I was I love with Lynn Paul. She was so hot. Eva Graham seemed less naughty. Whatever became of her?

  • streets ahead of the crap that won it at the post..FIX..lynn paul what a babe

  • This song is terrible. I can understand that some people have sentimental feelings that can always blind you from assessing something accurately. It has the 'Sweet Caroline' repeating throughout the chorus which is forgivable because it IS the Scottish National anthem.

I have no feelings tied to this song and I like a lot of crappy music for the times years I am sentimental about. So, I'm not blaming anyone.

I will admit that it was a forerunner to ABBA who were in fact 1000 times better.

  • Brilliant that was when they had proper orchestras in the eurovision Ronnie Hazelhurst conducted for the UK New seekers fantastic

  • They were ABBA before ABBA.

  • Remember this well but I didn't realise it was a Euro-entry. Just remember it being a hit. Should normally have been a winner but unfortunately Apres Toi was a seriously class act.

  • forget the trash? This is awful.

  • @MLJ284I do not think so!!

  • Probably one of the best ever UK entrants...and where does it come.....2nd AGAIN!

  • Winner : Luxembourg : "Apres Toi" performed by Vicky Leandros

  • This is the first time I've heard this song. What a good one !

  • I love it how Lynn Paul (I think that is her name) crunches her face. She looks so cute

  • Очень здорово поют , прелесть!!!! Кто знает, что стало с солистом, они почему - то пели без него?

  • Best UK entry ever.

  • Interestingly enough, the first ever appearance of the Mandelbrot set. six years before it's supposed discovery. Also worthy of note is that under their clothes, the girls are totally naked.

  • @jaxxstraw Isn't everyone totally naked under their clothes? LOL

  • @jaxxstraw what would you be if you took off your clothes? NAKED!

That was a stupid remark... Sir David

  • Shame we can't produce songs for eurovision song contest, like this one.

  • Man the use in modern technology in the staging is on an all time high compared to this years :P look at that beast of an LED screen on the left wall :P

  • Vicky Leandros won with 'Apre Toi'..'Come What May' was the English translation

  • Ahh Eurovision in the 70's. Those were the days. You know, the days when it was all about the song and not national pride! Will we ever see them again?

  • @britecho Unlikely I'd say but the national pride thing probably wasnt quite true as there was was a certain amount of political voting bewteeen certain countries!

  • why are the women dressed like queen victoria - the most unsexy look ever surely...how did we do in 72?

  • politics got in the way here, this song had winner all over it, the group gave it their all, a wonderful performance from a wonderful harmony group, never took the competition seriously after this.

  • even with this we'll still lose

    Europe hates us

  • Really nice i remember that wonderful night.

  • @CATMANDU77 so do i and i was only 7

  • Didn't Lyn have a minor hit in the late 70's ( or early 780's) with 'It Oughta Sell a Million'?

  • I still love Lyn Paul - A real cutie

  • oooh shove that pile of poo somewhere... how dare it have managed to access my computer........so fucking.....erm.... mmmm... thinking... ermmm... CRAP... how very dare they... i am british but i never thought that would be in my heritage...i feel ashamed to have realised after so many years that being british on that particular day meant i can never look a foreigner in the eye without shame...

  • is that middle guy the one who Eve married?

  • @westfield90 I'm fairly certain they didn't get married. From left to right. Paul Layton, Lyn Paul, Peter Doyle (now sadly deceased I believe), Eve Graham and Marty Kristian.

  • @PianoFatso Thank You. You are correct Peter Doyle died in 2001 of Throat Cancer. He had a good voice.

  • @PianoFatso sadly he is

  • What are the names of the girls? Are they still alive?

  • Best. UK. Song. Ever.

  • Apart from the great harmonies I really don't see any similarity with ABBA, I like both groups but ABBA were much more upbeat pop/rock whereas the new(and the old for that matter) seekers were very folksy

  • That was really good and the live harmonies were spot on! That was in the days when the Eurovision Song contest had great songs is was no where near the embarassment it is now!

  • This was a great song and should've won. I loved the New Seekers - especially Pete Doyle!!! Brings back lovely memories for a woman of a certain age!!!

  • Lyn Paul sat on my knee! (1973)

  • Lyn Paul sat on my knee! (1973)

  • Top song. Top hairstyles. Top upload.

  • I loved this song when I was a kid, now it leaves me utterly cold.

  • This takes you back to when the Eurovision could attract the top pop performers to compete. I was 3 at the time but I must have been up watching it with my family. It was a family tradition that we watched the Eurovision, had crisps and lemonade ah the simple pleasures. I have had this great pop song in my head ever since. The lads seem to be wearing nudie suits bizzarely. Were they secret fans of the flying burrito brothers?

  • who does the backing vocal on this one?

    .....brillant voice...!!!!!

It´s one of the five but I can´t make out who

  • @kirchroas

Which particular backing vocal do you mean? The lead switches between Peter Doyle and Lyn Paul, with all of them doing "backing" at various points in the song. The upper harmony line on the chorus (a third above the melody) is being provided by Eve Graham, the brunette.

  • This is the first memory of Eurovision I have. Seeing them now they are really very good a nice upbeat postitive number and a good performance. But Vicky Leandros was great too.

  • The New Seekers were very unlucky to come up against Vicky Leandros. In any other year, they would undoubtedly have won. But Vicky's song had already gathered an unstoppable momentum across Europe before the night of the contest, having had almost blanket airplay on Radio Luxembourg in the weeks prior.

  • paved the way 4 abba...this really was the best song on the night....great harmonies.....tight band.

  • ABBA are four people not 5 xD

  • Comment removed

  • Only one thing. they came before ABBA

  • @Lillepepps 'The seekers' came before abba but no these guys didn't and while all members of abba were very successful before they formed abba, Agnetha (the blonde one) was by far the most successful gaining popularity from1966 onwards

  • @Lillepepps Yes ... and the monkey came before the human

  • @Lillepepps lyn paul in the pink. went on to make a few singles of her own after they split up. good singer

  • They're similar to ABBA...!!

  • Eve Graham is prettier than VICKI Leandros

  • Love this song and the group. Sad, one of them (Peter) is died already.

  • Is Peter the male lead singer?

  • Esta es una de las más hermosas canciones que ha enviado el Reino Unido a Eurovisión

  • Sorry..."tone deaf".

  • I haven't read all the comments so forgive me if I'm repeating what someone else has said but to sum this performance up "great song, appalling arrangement". What the hell was that awful sharp electric guitar going off in the background (it didn't appear to be played by either of the two (acoustic) guitarists in the band so where was it coming from and what one deaf idiot thought it was a good idea? That's where we lost the contest.

  • @ghasgfhag - the "sharp electric guitar" was actually a lap steel (or Hawaiian) guitar, doubled by the orchestra's lead guitarist. In a longer version of this video, also on YouTube, you can see the guitarist holding it in his lap as conductor David Mackay takes his place at the rostrum. (The orchestra also included a rhythm guitarist, who played a cream-coloured jazz guitar in this song.)

  • @goldheartbadge Thanks for the info. I didn't recognise the lap steel, despite the fact that I tried to learn to play one many years ago. Not trying to be a smart arse but i still stick to my original verdict on this one - a great song spoiled by a bad arrangement. But all the same, good to see it on youtube. Best.

  • Anche io ricordo di averli visti in Eurovisione, avevo 13 anni. E' una bella canzone.

  • I remember watching this on the night ! IIRC the voting was quite close between the UK & Luxemburg and we were just piped at the post. This was and is a great song and they really gave it their all on the night. Sadly it was not be for the UK in 1972. Peter Doyle may no longer be with us but the fact that we are still watching and enjoying the music (thanks to youtube) is a lasting testement to his talent. RIP

  • This band were ripped off like many of the time...they were paid a scandalous £100 per week......while other parasites behind the scenes were probably making millions. It's one of the reasons why Peter quit.....and he was a fantastic talent...RIP Peter.

  • paisley;

    which 1 was Peter???

  • Hi...he was the guy in the middle in the blue....from Australia and look him up on his web site or via Lynn Pauls web site(link)

He is Peter Doyle and died sadly very young

  • thanks for that ,cheers.

  • or what?

  • Nice Frocks. :-)

  • Well did they win or what?

  • Read the description ;-)

  • @tasosk3 They came 2nd. Used to be my favourite group. Had a whole wall of posters of 'em! Brill in their day!

  • @Lavendergaljackie2 The winner that year was Luxembourg's Vicky Leandros with 'Come what May'. Not a bad song either.

  • forget all the trash you hear in the charts nowadays.

    This is a timeless classic.

One of many reasons why I love the 1970's

  • brings back great memories of the seventies for me xxx

  • bad teeth and all ? still rocks

  • Ah, great stuff! :o)

  • Possibly the UK greatest Eurovision entry - definitely one of the best Euro perfomances ... the harmonies, the pitch......just wonderful

  • I loved it.

  • those frills, the dresses, the big hair - wow - and the girls weren't bad either!

talk about funky in an unknowing way. far funnier and camper than the designed efforts in today's Eurovision

  • Possibly our best ever entry. Should've won, Apres Toi is not my cup of tea at all.

  • thanks for that. just found his web-site etc. How sad.

  • amazing to see this again. I loved the ESC when i was younger (12). Pete Doyle was my fave. Why RIP pete Doyle ? Is he not with us anymore?

  • Sadly Peter Doyle passed away a few years ago. This classic line-up of THE NEW SEEKERS is the one that all true fans love. They all look fantastic, dress smartly and sing excellent. They certainly made us all proud back then. I remember newspaper headlines in 1972 'SEEKER FEVER' Phil

  • Peter Doyle was my fave also, he was to young to die, RIP Peter. xx

  • lynne paul ?

    no ones mentioned her

    pretty girl, still sounds great

  • Those were the days when it was considered failure if we didn't win-last nights ESC we came 5th?? & it was amazing!!! This was one of best-great song, GREAT singers.

  • I like Paul's suit, very cool ;-)

  • ....no coment....

  • marty is the one on the end on the right

  • I remember as a kid some of the later New Seekers 45s came out with 'featuring Marty' as part of the billing - does anybody know which one Marty is?

    thanks

  • he's on the far right.

  • Come Softy To Me and Crying In The Rain both featured Marty on lead. Nic

  • Eve Graham was a babe

    lol i was only 12 in 72

    still fancied her tho

  • so did sandy mccabe, No luck

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha..

  • What a british song! =D

  • :) I remeber this song from my early childhood

  • it was criminal this didn't win

  • This group performed the title track to "Free To Be-You And Me", just a bit of trivia for you New Seekers fans! Also which girl is Eve, and which one in Lyn? Great harmony.

  • Blonde one is lyn the dark ones eve. Yes great harmony and remember its live.

  • RIP Pete Doyle

  • Mein gott is das ein toller song^^

der hat mich ja voll umgehauen ... einmla im kopf geht der einfach nicht mehr raus^^

  • Hi,is there anyone known that Lyn Paul had sang one song in the late 70's --- "LOVE" ?

I have been looked for a very long time !

    Please help !

  • I just read you request, I hope you've now found it on youtube. Look out for other solo songs by Lyn Paul, she's done some great recordings.

  • great song fell in love with eve graham.eurovision is just a joke now.

  • Dear Lyn,Eve,Marty,Paul-Its time you guys got back together for one last blast. Your music was so great. Believe me it would sell out!

  • Actually they are still going today. They do shows around the southcoast, places like Lyme Regis etc., They do all the old songs too!

  • i live near lyme regis! fantastic place :0 love dorset

  • Wish we could go back to those times - everything seemed better then.

  • The good old days when United Kingdom at least tried. This is great.

  • Another great trip down memory lane , I was 11 when this was out but remember so clearly watching it on the Contest that year.Great group.

  • great song

  • I cannot believe a song of this quality could not win Eurovision. It was as good as Abba's Waterloo with just as wonderful a performance. What a lesson for today's UK Eurovision entries which always seem to be so awful(not that we would win anyway)!

  • you're right-it should have won but Vicki Leandros (who won) had a huge advantage. Radio Luxembourg had been playing her song for weeks beforehand about 6 times a night & it was already hugely popular all over europe b4 the contest. I was 15 & listened to Lux every night.

  • It didn't win it because it was beaten by a better song . Good as it was, Apres Toi ( Come what may in the English version ) was far superior . In any other year it may have won , but Vicky Leandros's song had simply too much class

  • I couldn't agree more.

  • I liked this very much, when it was top of the pops, long long long ago...

  • A superb LIVE performance of one of the UKs best Eurovision songs.

  • R.I.P. Pete Doyle.
