To be fair this is a junk song : they put even a bit of country music into, just to make this entry more awful ;-) !
And what about the lyrics ? Just listen to them : as silly & stupid as in a Dolly Parton's yawn !! ^^ Hahaha How could such a crap get a 2n place ? Mistery ....
They where good singers, the only critic I have is the name of the group, they better had called it a total other name. The changing just with a extra word "new "I find not respectful to the Seekers that group was original.
I don't think "we wuz robbed" in the sense of the sort of bloc voting which has made Eurovision a waste of time entering these days; just think (as did the French family I was staying with at the time) that this was the best song on the night. Apres toi was good but not stand-out good; in my opinion.
Lyn Paul ( the lady in the pink dress) was one of the first people to appear in Corornation Streets first episode. She was one of the young children playing outside Florrie Lindleys shop in the very first scene.
Checked Husky's Songs of Praise. It definitely anticipates Abba and Teach-In in 74 and 75, but I'm not quite sure it is as strong as those winning entries. Maybe the New Seekers could have pulled it off with a bit more energy. Not sure. I'll let others decide. I still think Vicky Leandros' Apres Toi is a classic that would have taken some beating.
Europe didn't hate us (as much) back then. They sang this really well, better than the the recorded version possibly! If they'd put as much effort in to Roy Wood's Songs Of Praise in the UK's final selection, we would have won. Take a look at a a group called Husky on YouTube & see how they handled it to give you some idea of what could have been.
Will people please leave off the predictable 'we wuz robbed' line. I like this song BUT Apres Toi by Vicky Leandros is a high quality song in any company. If Europe hates us a) why did this come second and not last; and b) how on earth did the oompah rubbish of Puppet on a String - which Sandie Shaw herself disowned - beat Vicky Leandros; seriously good Love is Blue a few years earlier? I still say that Cliff should have won in '68 and The Shadows in '75 mind.
having already made it to the top of the hit parade, teaching the world to sing, europe were not about to let these stars to shine, an obvious winner best uk entry ever...
Should have pulled out about 1990 and stopped insulting our rich heritage by making arses of ourselves. We once ruled the pop/rock world and still had enough left over to do the business at Eurovision. Now we're crap at both.
Fantastic song by brilliant group, came 2nd to a good winner Luxembourg. This was when the UK was in rich vein of form, never being outside the top 4 from 67 - 77.
Those were the days.....as the 1970 UK entrant once sang!
Think we need to go back to these days at the Eurovision, No dancers mincing in the background of gimmicks. After all it's a song contest, which got lost along the way a long time ago.
Couldn't beat the lovely Vicky Leandros with "Apres Toi" getting her own back after being beaten by Sandie Shaw in 1967 although her song, " L'Amour est Bleu", was better.
Now,THAT was how it was done.Eurocrap is a pale, poor version now.The New Seekers were always a joy to watch/listen to & Lynn Paul & Eve Graham two of the classiest female vocalists the UK had.Yup,the 70s was definitely the decade for music.
This was a triumph- Vicky Leandros gave all cabaret singers a wonderful ballad and deserved her win, but this song somehow hits you with its zest and tunefulness. Lovely to think that when the original group split they remained friends. Who wouldn't fall in love with Lyn Paul and Eve Graham.
Not by a long mile one of my favourite groups, but good god! This is all live: live orchestra and live vocals - I mean, *listen* to those harmonies! Amazing.
This song is terrible. I can understand that some people have sentimental feelings that can always blind you from assessing something accurately. It has the 'Sweet Caroline' melody repeating throughout the chorus which is forgivable because it IS the Scottish National anthem.
I have no feelings tied to this song and I like a lot of crappy music for the years I am sentimental about. So, I'm not blaming anyone.
I will admit that it was a forerunner to ABBA who were in fact 1000 times better.

oooh shove that pile of poo somewhere... how dare it have managed to access my computer........so fucking.....erm.... mmmm... thinking... ermmm... CRAP... how very dare they... i am british but i never thought that would be in my heritage...i feel ashamed to have realised after so many years that being british on that particular day meant i can never look a foreigner in the eye without shame...
@westfield90 I'm fairly certain they didn't get married. From left to right. Paul Layton, Lyn Paul, Peter Doyle (now sadly deceased I believe), Eve Graham and Marty Kristian.
Apart from the great harmonies I really don't see any similarity with ABBA, I like both groups but ABBA were much more upbeat pop/rock whereas the new(and the old for that matter) seekers were very folksy
That was really good and the live harmonies were spot on! That was in the days when the Eurovision Song contest had great songs is was no where near the embarassment it is now!
This was a great song and should've won. I loved the New Seekers - especially Pete Doyle!!! Brings back lovely memories for a woman of a certain age!!!
This takes you back to when the Eurovision could attract the top pop performers to compete. I was 3 at the time but I must have been up watching it with my family. It was a family tradition that we watched the Eurovision, had crisps and lemonade ah the simple pleasures. I have had this great pop song in my head ever since. The lads seem to be wearing nudie suits bizzarely. Were they secret fans of the flying burrito brothers?
Which particular backing vocal do you mean? The lead switches between Peter Doyle and Lyn Paul, with all of them doing "backing" at various points in the song. The upper harmony line on the chorus (a third above the melody) is being provided by Eve Graham, the brunette.
This is the first memory of Eurovision I have. Seeing them now they are really very good a nice upbeat postitive number and a good performance. But Vicky Leandros was great too.
The New Seekers were very unlucky to come up against Vicky Leandros. In any other year, they would undoubtedly have won. But Vicky's song had already gathered an unstoppable momentum across Europe before the night of the contest, having had almost blanket airplay on Radio Luxembourg in the weeks prior.
@Lillepepps 'The seekers' came before abba but no these guys didn't and while all members of abba were very successful before they formed abba, Agnetha (the blonde one) was by far the most successful gaining popularity from1966 onwards
I haven't read all the comments so forgive me if I'm repeating what someone else has said but to sum this performance up "great song, appalling arrangement". What the hell was that awful sharp electric guitar going off in the background (it didn't appear to be played by either of the two (acoustic) guitarists in the band so where was it coming from and what one deaf idiot thought it was a good idea? That's where we lost the contest.
@ghasgfhag - the "sharp electric guitar" was actually a lap steel (or Hawaiian) guitar, doubled by the orchestra's lead guitarist. In a longer version of this video, also on YouTube, you can see the guitarist holding it in his lap as conductor David Mackay takes his place at the rostrum. (The orchestra also included a rhythm guitarist, who played a cream-coloured jazz guitar in this song.)
@goldheartbadge Thanks for the info. I didn't recognise the lap steel, despite the fact that I tried to learn to play one many years ago. Not trying to be a smart arse but i still stick to my original verdict on this one - a great song spoiled by a bad arrangement. But all the same, good to see it on youtube. Best.
I remember watching this on the night ! IIRC the voting was quite close between the UK & Luxemburg and we were just piped at the post. This was and is a great song and they really gave it their all on the night. Sadly it was not be for the UK in 1972. Peter Doyle may no longer be with us but the fact that we are still watching and enjoying the music (thanks to youtube) is a lasting testement to his talent. RIP
This band were ripped off like many of the time...they were paid a scandalous £100 per week......while other parasites behind the scenes were probably making millions. It's one of the reasons why Peter quit.....and he was a fantastic talent...RIP Peter.
Sadly Peter Doyle passed away a few years ago. This classic line-up of THE NEW SEEKERS is the one that all true fans love. They all look fantastic, dress smartly and sing excellent. They certainly made us all proud back then. I remember newspaper headlines in 1972 'SEEKER FEVER' Phil
Those were the days when it was considered failure if we didn't win-last nights ESC we came 5th?? & it was amazing!!! This was one of best-great song, GREAT singers.
This group performed the title track to "Free To Be-You And Me", just a bit of trivia for you New Seekers fans! Also which girl is Eve, and which one in Lyn? Great harmony.
I cannot believe a song of this quality could not win Eurovision. It was as good as Abba's Waterloo with just as wonderful a performance. What a lesson for today's UK Eurovision entries which always seem to be so awful(not that we would win anyway)!
you're right-it should have won but Vicki Leandros (who won) had a huge advantage. Radio Luxembourg had been playing her song for weeks beforehand about 6 times a night & it was already hugely popular all over europe b4 the contest. I was 15 & listened to Lux every night.
It didn't win it because it was beaten by a better song . Good as it was, Apres Toi ( Come what may in the English version ) was far superior . In any other year it may have won , but Vicky Leandros's song had simply too much class

Possibly the UK greatest Eurovision entry - definitely one of the best Euro perfomances ... the harmonies, the pitch......just wonderful

I loved it.

those frills, the dresses, the big hair - wow - and the girls weren't bad either!
talk about funky in an unknowing way. far funnier and camper than the designed efforts in today's Eurovision

Possibly our best ever entry. Should've won, Apres Toi is not my cup of tea at all.

amazing to see this again. I loved the ESC when i was younger (12). Pete Doyle was my fave. Why RIP pete Doyle ? Is he not with us anymore?
denbobembo 2 years ago
Sadly Peter Doyle passed away a few years ago. This classic line-up of THE NEW SEEKERS is the one that all true fans love. They all look fantastic, dress smartly and sing excellent. They certainly made us all proud back then. I remember newspaper headlines in 1972 'SEEKER FEVER' Phil

I cannot believe a song of this quality could not win Eurovision. It was as good as Abba's Waterloo with just as wonderful a performance. What a lesson for today's UK Eurovision entries which always seem to be so awful(not that we would win anyway)!
layde1 3 years ago 3
you're right-it should have won but Vicki Leandros (who won) had a huge advantage. Radio Luxembourg had been playing her song for weeks beforehand about 6 times a night & it was already hugely popular all over europe b4 the contest. I was 15 & listened to Lux every night.
mackemlad888 3 years ago 5
It didn't win it because it was beaten by a better song . Good as it was, Apres Toi ( Come what may in the English version ) was far superior . In any other year it may have won , but Vicky Leandros's song had simply too much class
