  • I remember watching this interview when it was first broadcast. Shankly was asked what it was that made Jock Stein such a great manager. This was part of his answer. Btw, for what it's worth - re: best Celtic player. Kenny Dalglish ( my fav ) , Jimmy Johnstone and Henrik Larsson - in that order.

  • Why are Scottish managers the best in the world?

  • Liverpool in Shankly's day was egalitarian. No time for big egos and superstars. Better times.

  • never seen this before , looks like it was outside his home in bellefield ave ( a cul de sac) and next to evertons then training ground .

  • Stein, Busby, Shankly, Ferguson and Clough all fantastic managers all very down to earth guys and 4 out of 5 were Scottish. I think Clough would like to have been Scottish :-)

  • god bless bill shankly ynwa.

  • He really hate catholics.

  • Anti catholic bigot. Bill shankly

  • @PauIsixsmith Jesus you are an idiot

  • @PauIsixsmith i think he was catholic m8-not 100% certain tho

  • " I saw a city cast adrift, without hope. My vision was to build something, a bastion of socialist football, a giant red machine that would return Liverpool to greatness."

Beats the post match interviews we endure now.

  • Everyone mentions Stein Shanks & Busby -- all great managers. Another to add to thelist and still winning is Ferguson. All from Scottish working class backgrounds and all passionate about the game.

  • @BigjockGnu diff is stein and shankly didnt have £100s of millions to spend to do it-fergie did

  • @returnofthemadguy Different eras but that does not diminish the magnitude of the achievements.

  • @BigjockGnu exactly m8-i think a lot of fans think there was no greats until the 60s and it pisses me off

  • we'll probably get up to heaven and find out that shankly has taken over from god

  • we guys like this back in football so bad, stein ,shankly legends mon the hoops

  • Anti catholic bigot. Thats all he was.

  • @PauIsixsmith Wise up to yourself....

  • @cathkinghost Strachan is a guy who is unpopular with a number of supporters - ask a Coventry fan. I did not say that it was ok so please do not misunderstand me. Kenny Dalglish was loved by Celtic fans but some were angry when he moved to Liverpool and those people took a bitter option. That is fandom, not offical club policy. Ask yourself why Dalglish was dropped by Scotland so as not to beat George Young's record or why he got the 102 Caps when better Celtic players got 23 or less.

  • @MrHarrylime79 there only been 1 celtic player thats scotiish that could be seen to be better than kenny dalglish

  • @thetoon99 not true pal-celtic have had players such as jimmy mcgrory-(a distant relative) he was liverpools best ever player,he would be lucky to scrape into the top 10 at celtic

  • @returnofthemadguy i meant in terms of ablity over kennys whole carrer mate, jimmy mcgrory and kenny were diffrent tupes of players one was a second striker the other a pure striker.

  • @thetoon99 i know what you mean m8-but jimmy mcgrory ,once scored 8 times in a game and scored 497 goals in 479 games-players from the past dont get the recognition they deserve-charlie tully once got the ball caught under his boots,in the 6yd box,n he somersaulted with the ball into the net-one time he scored direct from a corner kick, the ref made him take it again-result scored again straight from the corner

  • @returnofthemadguy yea i see what your saying, but looking at the whole picture as a player kenny is seen as one of the top 3 or 4 scottish players ever, i know mcgrory was a great player and goal scorer but looking at the ablity point of few, i'd say kenny had the edge but both great i'm a rangers and newcastle fan rangers had two great goal scorers in the last 20 odd years mccoist and boyd niether were great players infact i think boyd wasa poor player but a great scorer, mcgrory was great

  • @thetoon99 im from where kenny was brought up,so theres that wee bit of pride round there about kenny,he was a great player,a legend really, the scheme i was brought up in used to churn out footballers-i played pro,was forced to retire at 33 through injury-as i said mc grory is related to me,i just think he/or others from b4 the 60s dont get the credit they deserve, james was more than just a poacher-he had so much more to his game-its nice being able to talk about the OF without petty insults :)

  • @returnofthemadguy yea i know he was more thats why i said he weasa great scorer and a great player

  • @cathkinghost I'm not saying there have not been terrible things that have happened - there have. There was no policy of exclusion at Celtic in terms of playing staff and that is a fact. The reatment of Stein was disgraceful but it was a diffeent time. How many Catholics on Rangers' board ever? Your point about Strachan is a bullshit media driven nonsense - no Celtic fan ever said it until they wrote it. He was disliked for the football and his manners by some people. Look a Middlesboro now.

  • @MrHarrylime79 jock seen was a protestant its good to know as while he was a ranghers fan he whore the celtic shirt with pride and then managed them hes the exsample these 2 grreat clubs should look at to cut down on the bad blood.

  • Shankly, Busby, Stein. Cut through the rivalry for a minute, these guys were legends.

  • Ferguson is a great modern manager but quite frankly, he is nowhere near Stein or Shankly in eternal greatness.

  • @PauIsixsmith Stein was a protestant too. Does that make him 'an orange bastard'? Liverpool may have Orangemen roots, but they've moved on from that. Rangers on the other hand, haven't - that's why they're universally despised. I like to think that many of my fellow Celtic fans, are bigger than this sectarian nonsense. Celtic is an open and welcoming football club - to ALL religions, nationalities and ethnicities. Besides, speaking as a socialist, its all of us or none, tim or hun.

  • @PauIsixsmith Mr Shankley despised all this fucking bullshit. He insisted that the Scots he signed left it in Scotland. Bill was a true immortal as was Jock as was Matt Busby. Bigotry and hate has no place in football. Rivalry is fine. Celtic has always been an inclusive club unlike Rangers and we are proud of that. We had our bad moments of course but we know what TEAM means.

  • God if only there was people like this in football today! Stein & Shankly 100% legends

  • We don't have football men like this anymore....Stein, Shankly....legends in their own life and death. We were very lucky to have these men around for our clubs.

  • true legend
