  • so why is chris an idiot here ? or is that just a positive way of saying how freaking incredible he in fact is ? Im not american, thats why i dont get it....

  • @beatsyndrom yeah it's a positive thing. it's like calling someone "bad" when they're actually really good. Like, "Chris Dave is a baaaaaad drummer!" means he's really good.

  • CHOCOLATE RAIN

  • That gave me a fucken heart attack

  • 2 words billy kilson...this guy is right up there with him

  • LOL @ the chocolate rain reference at :58

  • Comment removed

  • @314freebopclub naw man.........theyre all from houston them jamire williams, and kendrick scott. they all have a similar vocabulary.

  • I believe stokley and chris dave are completely different... yeah they can drop alot of the same patterns butwhen they play together and things like that u can hear 2 totaly different styles which is wut i love bout the too... just in my opinion also... i dont think spanky should even be mentioned in any chris dave, stokley, tony williams vid in any kinda comparison... not to be negative but from wu i've seen... he's not even close to these cats, thats just my opinion

  • Tony Williams.....he's a influence's influence....to me

  • yeah he's the man!

  • I dig it!

  • I think Chris is actually the next Tony Williams. Like, Tony redefined jazz drumming by 17 years old, right? Chris is doing it again. Chris is like the first drummer to actually make hip hop/gospel/pocket stuff work with jazz ethics in a jazz context. Everybody before him that tried that ended up sounding stiff, like a jazz parody. Chris is the most original drummer in 20 years, easy

  • ive bin sayin that for a while man. in my books no1 has brought a fresh approach to the drums the way chris has since tony williams. and im not sure there are many/any others.

    actually papa jo jones

  • so true. Chris Dave has such a unique voice on the drums, you instantly know its him. He has by far the most distinct voice of any drummer i've ever heard. And you hear all the drummers copying his licks too like Eric Harland, Kendrick Scott, Thomas Pridgen, EVERYONE! Chris Dave is so dope

  • Like, ever hear Gene Lake or Poogie, or even Stokely play straight-ahead? Then listen to Chris play it on some of those Kenny Garrett records, and then this Glasper stuff. Dude's got a hybrid feel that cats on both sides wish they could cop, cause he's slicker than a jazzer but swings way harder than a pocket guy

  • yeah nobody can do it like chris... and even if someone could, u'd already know their biggest influence(chris daddy dave)... stokley is actually my second far\vorite under chris... watching stokley battle it up on vid's wit chris or terry wesley, showed me how amazing and underrated that guy is... and i think just like chris dave, stokley holds back alot of his skill and i don think we'll ever see stokley or chris at there best because they arent about that, they focus on quality of music

  • o i forgot to mention the songs wit stokley on the kit on the MC albums, amazing...

  • yeah but Chris is bad on some MC cuts too

  • o chris is the man on anything he plays... i'm just pointing out how underrated stokley also is...

  • What alot of "US" forget is that Chris can play this way because it is not Gospel Music he's playing...Jazz and HipHop, when you play these styles you are allowed to do more than let's say Teddy Campbell or Even Spanky can for that matter.

  • Yeah that is true....Chris does remind me of a freeform jazz musician....but what you said about Spank....I beg to differ... He and Chris do have similar chop styles in my opinon.Take that Super Swing beat with the triplets on the hi-hat for example they can both do that and the few shed clips I saw Spanky in,Spanky did do some chops that Chris would've done.

    But thats my opinon...

  • I feel you but, in my own mind Spanky does have chops but it seem's alot of times he is redundant. I get tired of hearing himplay due to the fact that it does sound like Chris Dave...What I believe gives Spanky an edge is that everyone he plays with like Chris is mentally and fundamentally more advanced giving them Both the freedom's as I stated to do this. Spanky does have great ability but it's like even he has now plateau'd and became "boring" so to speak...

    My oppinion.

  • I completely understand what your saying but they're still great drummers that we can still learn from....

  • Oh, without a doubt...I am always learning from all MUSICIAN's.

    Good Convo Bruh!

  • Anytime doc!

  • completely agree...

  • I completely understand what your saying but they're still great drummers that we can still learn from....

  • i strongly agree... spanky is great... if i had atleast his skills i'd be happy but i consider him more of a gospel drummer wit a lil twist... and i believe he cant compare to chris at all... he can do a couple of things that chris dave can do but that is on spankys best days... while chris aint even breakin a sweat, always bringin more

  • i think spanky is decent but just to be straight forward he has nothing on chris... the best u've seen spanky do, i'm positive that chris could do in his sleep...yeah spanky's style is indeed different from just about any other drummer like chris but i thank when all the vid's i've seen of spanky solos and battles(shed's) or whatever u wanna call it, he seems to be pretty repetitive to me

  • and when it comes to skill, style and creativity... chris leaves spanky behind in dust miles and miles behind... all his solos seem compact to me... like he does a couple of nice things and sticks wit it... while in every new vid u see of chris... its something totally new and totally out of this world... thats just my opinion

  • The Hottest version of Chocolate rain ever!!!

  • what kinda kit was he using?

  • was a mapex, didnt catch the series. 22' bass drum, 14" hangin floor, 14x5-1/2" brass snare (black panther i think). 15" or 16" hats which were probly 2 crashes, had a lp brass hihat tambourine taped to the top. an o-zone legacy ride and i think i dejohnette ride both with sizzle chains. yeh and he had a mounted tambourine resting on his top snare head

  • Imma save up for that o-zone ride...I'm soo lovin the sound!

  • definitely! me too

  • do you know what kind of cymbal that he uses... usually he has it cranked down really tight and when he hits it, it makes a flat dead sound... it does not ring like a regular cymbal. last vid i saw where he was using it was with Meshell N'Degeocello -Aflaq

  • two cymbals stacked. varies from gig to gig. usually looks like some kind of small ride, maybe 18", over another one or a beat up old cymbal

  • brand: Ufip (Trust me. I know.)

  • @donniguel naw sabian

  • yeh also i think he was sayin summin bout how it wsnt his kit etc and the bass drum pedal ws falling off every 10 seconds. oh yeh and if you wanna get really anal, the tom and bass drum had pinstripes on them and everything, specially the snare, ws tuned really high

  • wow... thats some outta this world type stuff... thanks man:) just loving these vids so much. i watch them like daily.

  • This kats thinkin pattern is out of this WORLD!!!! LITERALLY!!!! he is in a class all by himself!!!! this is spanky's drum teacher yall! Jesus is King!

  • great comment:)

  • Glasper is a Joker, check out 0:57 "Chocolate Rain".

  • o snap!!! thanx for pointing that out lol

  • that's a deep quote!

  • tears'

  • The reason why he is probably the best drummer is because nobody is doing what he is doing. Everybody is playing the same stuff while chris stays on the other side of fence. Know what I mean. Who plays so out of pocket and time and them comes RIGHT back in the groove like if he wasnt just playing that?

  • that is such a backwards way of thinking. i feel bad for people like us who don't know any better. he's just too off base to ignore. he is definitely one of the greats even now. in my opinion he's as good as it gets right now.

  • u both are right on point:)

  • ...probably only Tony did...with Miles.

  • What about OMAR HAKIM? STOKELY?

  • ..are you sure? At this point? I don't know...

  • When they were playing...Omar with Miles and Stokely from Mint Condition...If you think about it Stokely had alot to do with Chris' genious now....

  • from wu i heard... when stokley find chris, chris was already playing the this way when they met and thats why stokley was feelin chris... thats wu i've heard but i'm pretty sure they both picked alot from each other no doubt

  • stokey is a g, taking nothing away from him however chris is THE MAN, he's gotta be the freshest thing to happen to drums in the last 10 years.

omar hakim is the luckiest drummer alive, and im regularly more impressed by people at shitty open mic nights and jams.

  • There are actually none that impress me...Imitation is a high form of flattery but, I mean when is it ok to lose yourself in someone else's style?

But, stokely was the one training from about 15 til 18 @ least....Alot of the pattern's he plays Stoke plays as well. All the triplet's and heavy flam's he throw's down is the same thing STOKE's did.

Ha...Omar did come up on the Miles gig...I forgot to mention Elvin Jones in that group previously

  • haha chris's myspace lists his influences as tony williams.....

  • I see...which was clear anyhow...it's not a question of style but of taste ;)

  • YEP! YOU CAN HEAR IT WHEN HE PLAYs.
