loved this song when i heard it on the blasting concept years ago, always loved the guitar sound, reminded me of gang of fours angular sound and joe baizas lyrics were always very profound compared to a lot of straight hardcore,GREAT post mate.
I first heard this song on THE BLASTING CONCEPT compliation album years ago. I still love it. I was under the influence of a certain psychoactive substance (LSD) at the time. It took on a monumental importance as a result of that. I can still appreciate it today as a deep philosopical piece. Very poetic.
I used to do very bad things to little sluts back in these days. who would have guessed. Heck the pay was good, and all those sluts gave me beer to keep doing it.
Funny thing about SST bands is that they all didn't sound like Black Flag. ST was always sort of a cross between BF and DK. ST always reminded me of a lighter, poppier version of Black Flag crossed with Dead Kennedys.
Then again, this music is lost on the modern generation.
U.K./U.S. pissing matches... boring. The "pagan icons" ep would not have sounded the same w/ out exposure to Wire / Fall / Mekons / Gang of Four / Pop Group etc. The Minutemen acknowleged their debt to those bands and so did these dudes. It where they took it that counts- this record was one of the most jarringly original offerings of the whole U.S. hardcore era. Then their next record was even better...
@cubistblues I just one to say you are 100% right. We loved the bands you mentioned . They were definitely before us. Understand, at that time there were not very many hard driving experimental art punk bands in the Us or LA. There was no Sonic Youth then for us to listen to. All we had then were the UK bands. And we were okay with that. Because they were great bands. I saw The Gang of Four, The Fall and Blurt in LA 1979. You better believe those bands made a life lasting impression on me.
wow,i havent heard this since i was 14 in the 80s,brings back a lot of memories..i lost my virginity to the girl who owned this album, sweet punk girls rule.
@Starvoid7 Patriotism isn't unique to Americans, and neither is national superiority. What I'm telling you is that its retarded for a punk to say one country is more punk or has better punk music then another when the entire ideology that punk is based off rebellion and nonconformity... Not patriotism. It makes no sense, in any way, to be a punk and tell people about how awesome America is.
@demonicpriest The countries have different punk scenes. I think he's just saying the scenes and bands that came out of America were better than the British ones. You can't say its patriotic to acknowledge the existence of borders, and you especially can't call it irrebelious to appreciate the products that come out of those borders. By the same token, it would be impossible to call yourself a punk without being a conformist.
this is pretty good but when they added funk and religious mythology on 'surviving' they really got my attention............that albums a masterpiece and nobody hardly noticed.
When I first heard this in the mid 80's I thought it was weirdest song I had ever heard.. I'd put away my copy of The Blasting Concept. Then I'd get it out a few months later after getting tired of Judas Priest and listen to this song again. Eventually it got under my skin and became one of my favorite songs.. along with all the othe SST bands..
beautiful, sheer genius

The rendition on the "Past Lives" is much snippier, but this is great in it's anguished brood, like dying filth under a gutter.

@Starvoid7 Why would you apply patriotism and national superiority to punk rock?
demonicpriest 1 year ago
@demonicpriest
????
patriotism? i'm not even american!
Brits stole the credit for punk rock, but contributed to it maybe 5%
American punk is more diverse, energetic, intelectual, artsy, flexible, and just way better then British punk.
what did i say wrong?
