I never like being in the front of all the motorist behind me as they tend to push cyclists out the way as you go forward. I survive by good positioning here and force them to not over take. They don't like ie and hoot .. a nice Section 59 for them.
The side road is a dead end and is only 500 yards or so long, so I guess that's why there's no traffic light there. Mind you, over the last few days this construction zone has gotten longer and now there are other side roads, which are not dead ends and similarly don't have traffic lights. Still, according to the signs, only another 12 weeks till they're finished...
doesn't look like the side junction was signal controlled.

Yes, there may be a good reason for it.
