@Myrna4Loy Yes I giess he is a bit silly but I think its deliberate a lot of the time, most of the time. He's much happier since leaving Branson and that binding contract he had with him, he does his own thing. 58 this year and still making music.
I bought Tubular Bells in WH Smith in Chester a short while after it was released and I loved it. I have been a fan of it ever since. I love Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge has an ethereal quality for me.
@JedF2010 Definitely Tubular Bells, Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge, and Incantations are his 4 best albums in my opinion. He changed direction after that. I think his music reflects his life, he suffered greatly as a child. His Mother died before TB became successful, during the making of Ommadawn I believe.
@york222ful This is the end of what was originally side 1 of the record of Ommadawn. There is a medley from Ommadawn that appears on the Montreau dvd and includes this piece of music.
@slickdicko The album is called Ommadawn, there is no individual track listing. This piece of music is at the end of what was originally side one of the record. So about half way through.
@ TubularBelle. Yes I know how you feel. I am there as well...I am totally obsessed with Mike's music. All I can say is that we have exceptional taste in music! I don't know exactly how old I was when I bought Tubular Bells but i know that it was one of my very first albums ever.
Please please oh please upload the whole original ommadawn soundtrack. I love this short part of it, but have been trying to get my hand on the full original thing but have only got the Montreux concert so far.
@S0007100980 Looking to the list of videos on my right, there seems to already be the full version of Ommadawn on here, in two parts. Thank You for commenting.
@TubularBelle Thanks I was aware of that, I just wanted to know whether any video also existed which you might be having with you which I could watch, as I have never seen the music video of Ommadawn.
Yeah, I know the feeling, I was 13 when I was introduced to Mike's music, being a Rubetter before that.. .. Such a contrast. And ever since: Flairck, Japan, Sylvian, YMO, Sakamoto....
Don't know any of the other bands you have mentioned but I imagine they are quite different, as there is no one quite like Mike anyway. I don't like listening to other artists that other Mike fans listen to like Jarre and Vangelis, I prefer to listen to something completely different.
You cant really compare Floyd to Mike Oldfield! Really! Hes one guy and they have a band for musical ideas! They are different style to! Anyway... to be honest I think mike is much more talented musicaly although thats my opinion!
I am thrilled to find people sharing my own viws about Mike's music!! I adore his music, I always prefered instrumental music to any other kind, so Mike blew me away... I am sorry to say that neither of my children(son 25, daughter 18) are used to listening to his music...
You should try and get them to have a listen, just be careful what you choose to play. Some of Mikes stuff sounds quite dated but other stuff is timeless. I would start with this little piece of Ommadawn.
I love MO's music and I share the same views...I think Tubular Bells was exceptional , and I can still remember that I was the only one in my class (I was 13 too) that liked this kind of music. My classmates used to laugh at me...
I loved being the only kid at school who listened to this stuff and I managed to convert one of my sons to his music as well and now I have a 17 year old nephew getting into it.
My brother is on Mike's "side" but I think that Pink Floyd is musically above Mike......Really he is one of a kind...we both love him, but it is good to argue over this matter....You must have had a great birthday back then. Thanks for this excerpt.
I love Pink Floyd too but just the fact that they are so well known and popular makes me less interested in them than in Mike who has a more eclectic style and is more unique in my opinion.
What about me? My favourite piece? This one playing I think. I made up a cd of all of Mikes short instrumental pieces on the earlier albums I don't listen to much cause of the crappy songs, nothing longer than 10 minutes, and it sounds like a professionally put together cd, flows beautifully and I play it a lot. That would have all the Taurus pieces on it.
I only came onto You Tube because of Mike, not to watch his videos cause I have seen them all, but to find fans playing Mikes music. The first guy I found was Lemkuiper, he has a new account now, Lemintrepid which still features some of Mikes stuff including an interview he did with Peri Urban talking about Mike.
Yeh Mike is great. I have three sons in their 20's who listen to alternative radio and I love a lot of the new bands, but Mike is still number one for me. Some of his stuff is absolute crap, but I think he did them on purpose to get out of a record contract with Richard Branson he was not happy with, but his instrumental rock music rocks for sure.
I too have been a great fan of Mike's since hearing Tubular Bells when 16. This and the closing part of Incantations part 4 are my favourites of all Mike's great guitar riffs. Any chance of adding the latter piece to You Tube, as none of the other Incantations video clips seem to include it ?
Well all I seem to post these days is ferret vids but I will try and post it as soon as I can think of a suitable subject matter to put with it. How much of the closing part of Part 4 do you want, how many minutes? Thanks for commenting.
Well this vid was a response to a contest and was requested to be only a minute long. I am still planning a 'Life in Pictures' video and you can guarantee who will be playing in the background. Now how is this for obsession, it has been Mike for 35 years, but if I had to choose today between Mike and my ferrets, I don't know what I would say.
i brought my kids up on Mike Oldfield and the Ommadawn album just reminds me so much of my babies running around dancing....On horseback was a fave....brilliant xx
Mike Oldfield has been a fav of mine since I was 16 (1975). I have several favorites... On horseback, celtic rain, ommadawn. I like the newer ones too (I like a lot of new age now).
On Horseback, eeew, silly song. I think Mike has done a lot of bad stuff, most notably his silly pop songs, I am purely into the instrumental music and like it when he uses the human voice as a musical instrument, but each to their own. I remember one day a man came into the music store while I was browsing and asked the assistant who did Moonlight Shadow. I said, Mike Oldfield, and he said, No, it's a woman. I graciously filled him in.
ha.. I agree with horseback being a silly song and I would never play the song in outside my home but... I does strike some bizzar chord inside me. How did you get acquainted with Loreena McKennitt?
Interesting to see some not only of the same age as me, but female as well, espousing Mike's music! The exact piece you selected to put up here is the piece that is already written into my will to be played at MY funeral!! (Who'da thought it!) Ommadawn still edges out everything else for me... Looking at your quote above, what did you think of the alternative versions used for The Space Movie soundtrack? And the 12" single version? (With the gongs!)
Hey Joe, are you still online, chat to me in MSN Messenger.
Well, it is the most exciting part of Ommadawn for sure. I love Mikes more mellow music but the little spurts of stuff like this included in them is what gets my hairs to stand on end.
As for the Space Movie, I believe it was Incantations that they used for that, which was Mikes next album after Ommadawn.
And I have not heard the 12" version with the gongs, will have to search that one out. I can get my hands on almost anything but I don't have enough rarities to offer as a swap.
Not Just incantations.. bits of all of his previous albums were used, the soundtrack album (which was only ever acetate-d) would have been a 2 disc-er) it *is* out there though... as you no doubt know? ;')
Well I have everything Mike has ever recorded. I would love to put the whole of Ommadawn on here but what video footage would I use. You can easily just download practically any of Mikes music from LIMEWIRE. But I will continue to use Mikes music every opportunity that I get.
This is the most powerful piece of music I have ever heard on my life. It is god himself making music. Each time I hear it, I cry so hard that my forehead seems it is going to explode. Who needs drugs when you can have Ommadawn? me not.
WOW, I hadn't seen this comment before. It sure is powerful music, do you have the whole album? I hear that Mike sells the most albums in Spain and Germany, and is popular amongst the 18 to 25 year age bracket. You guys know great music when you hear it. Thanks for commenting.
yes, of course, I have the whole album on CD and in mp3.
Its great because it combines peaceful, very sweet music with stormy passages like the one you have posted. And everything is very well timed. And everything flows very easy, not forced at all. Indeed Mike was inspired when he composed this. I say again, it is as if God inspired him, because this music is not normal music. It is transcendental.
Yes, I think for some reason Mike sells a lot of music in Spain. I don't know exactly why. I wouldn't say that the spanish audience is better than others. There is a lot of crappy music being sold in Spain nowadays.
Maybe its because Mike had a house in the Canary islands, and later in Mallorca.
He resides permanently in Spain now. Personally I think that because European children are brought up on more traditional type music, they are more open to Mikes style of music than the Westerners who grow up listening to Britney Spears.
I am SOOOOO happy to see so many Oldfield fans of all ages on here!! :) I was 12 in England when TB was released..blew me AWAY that piece still haunts me.... Been playin guitar since 13 got my own style but keep hopin 1 day I'll pick 1 up and play like Mike. Belle, he'll be at my funeral too. Hit me back fans!!
Well we better not die on the same day then, he he. Check out Eric mongrain, he is a canadian Air Tap Guitarist. Good Stuff. There are also some excellent rock versions of the Canon in D or whatever it is called done on guitar.
Instantly a fan when I first watched Ommadawn performed on a cable tv special here in the 80's. Rushed out and bought albums of OD, TB, HR, QE2, 5MO, as I could find them.
[they were very rare to find here in Texas]
Closest thing we have to Mike here is Eric Johnson.
Never heard of Eric Johnson. Mikes latest album, Music of the Spheres, is out now, you can get it cheap on Amazon. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with a full symphony orchestra. But if you haven't heard AMAROK yet, you haven't heard anything. It has been described as the sister album to Ommadawn. Thanks for commenting.
Music of the Spheres? I've heared it, not by legal means mind, but I'll buy the CD when it's released.
It is excellent, it's got some brilliant moments of orchestral power, Harbinger, Tempest, Musica Univerallis, and Empyrean are my favourite bits of it.
I've only heard a small part of Songs of Distant Earth, Genesis and Let There be Light, here on youtube.
Well I am working on a "My Life in Pictures" video and I want to include most of the soundtrack of Ommadawn, it is his most beautifull piece. I'm sure you can find some longer snippets on here.
Yeh he's not bad is he, even today at 54. His young wife Fanny just gave birth to their 2nd child Eugene last month, his seventh. I believe his oldest daughter, Molly, is older than Fanny (both around 30), then comes Dougall, Luke, Greta, Noah, Jake and baby. Thanks for commenting.
I totally agree with you about Mike Oldfield and TB1, I spent many a happy days carrying my precious copy of the vinyl to several parties, happy days.Ommadawn gets me going too, dancing mostly, wink wink!!
I hope you still listen to Mike today, he is still recording music, the latest one will be released in Jan and you can hear snippets of it on You Tube and in my Video Diaries. Thanks for commenting. He just moved to Spain because of Ebglands No Smoking Rules.
A snippet of Tubular Bells was used in the 1973 Horror Movie The Exorcist and was the forerunner for that style of music setting the mood in future horror movies and TV shows. I think the music used in CSI has similarities to it as do many other shows.
Thanks for the Birthday Wishes. Well, if you wanna play it dangerous i would suggest Amarok, his most unusual but least commercially successfull album. I like his older stuff more, classic rock mixed with orchestral music. Probably Tubular Bells would be the safest place to start. There is heaps of stuff on Mike in here, check out my faves in my faves, he he.
Yes Mike wasn't very happy about that, it was done without his permission by Virgin but sales went up by 30%. He was disappointed they never mentioned his new autobiography but talked about both of Bransons books. I live in Australia, I got the newspaper article but not the cd. I have 11 copies of TB anyway, but that was a collectors item. So what did you think of it? Critique!
Thanks Andy, I want to get the new Windows Movie Maker program before I release my new blockbuster 'The Farken Movie', coming soon to You Tube, he he.
Oops, I went to reply to the first comment and accidentally clicked remove instead, so sorry about that. Please enter another comment if you like. I was gonna say, I think the version I have of Ommadawn in the Boxed set might be the Quad version, but I never listen to that one so will check it out. Sorry for removing your comment.

Yes, I think for some reason Mike sells a lot of music in Spain. I don't know exactly why. I wouldn't say that the spanish audience is better than others. There is a lot of crappy music being sold in Spain nowadays.
Maybe its because Mike had a house in the Canary islands, and later in Mallorca.

okay, I am sorry, I posted my 2 messages in the wrong place LOL. They should be replies to a previous post. well, not a big problem, I think.

He resides permanently in Spain now. Personally I think that because European children are brought up on more traditional type music, they are more open to Mikes style of music than the Westerners who grow up listening to Britney Spears.

Thanks for the post.

I am 16 years old and a huge fan of Mike Oldfield.
The excerpt on the video here shows the most dramatic part of Ommadawn, but it doesn't work as well without that sublime five minute build up :)
My favourite albums by Mike periodically shift between Ommadawn, Amarok, and Hergest Ridge.
He is just the greatest musician ever.

My Top 5 MO albums are Amarok, TB, Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge and SODE.
I absolutely love it when young people get into Mikes music. Have you heard any of his new album? not officially released yet, what do you think?

He was, and still is beautiful to the eyes and ears....

A snippet of Tubular Bells was used in the 1973 Horror Movie The Exorcist and was the forerunner for that style of music setting the mood in future horror movies and TV shows. I think the music used in CSI has similarities to it as do many other shows.

aha-l mite have 2 download 1-got a good suggestion 4 me? and HAPPY B'DAY!!!!!
SickNick69 4 years ago
Thanks for the Birthday Wishes. Well, if you wanna play it dangerous i would suggest Amarok, his most unusual but least commercially successfull album. I like his older stuff more, classic rock mixed with orchestral music. Probably Tubular Bells would be the safest place to start. There is heaps of stuff on Mike in here, check out my faves in my faves, he he.

I remember Tubular Bells from my youth, but never managed to own a copy, until a few weeks back when the CD came free with my daily paper. Brilliant!

Critique!
