Read "If You Want To Write" by Brenda Ueland.

She talks about the reasons why bad writers are secretly good writers, but can't bring that inner good writer out. It is because they are so worried about making grammatical mistakes that they change the writing until it becomes what they are not. Only write what is true to you, what is pure and wonderful and amazing, and others will recognize it. Of course it's nice to have some rules. Go ahead and try this- try writing a bad story.
