  • At least you Aussies have a cool stereotype :P

  • It's called a prawn, not a shrimp you silly Americans.

  • "Meet the Sniper - The early years"

  • Love how people think snakes and reptiles are everywhere in Australia. If they were, then me and 90% of the other Australians wouldn't be scared like little bitches when we encounter one.

  • You're also gonna have to learn to watch out for box jellyfish, stonefish, great white sharks, funnel web spiders, cone shells, spinifex, drop bears, baby-eating dingos...

  • @andyjay729 Or you can come to Eastern Australia and to go the coast, and not have to experience any of that.

  • who fucking cares if he says shrimp instead of prawn

  • Everyone he knows it's a prawn he's saying shrimp because the add is aimed at Americans and he's trying to make the add stereotypically Australian

  • Fuck advertisement

  • 0:36 thats not a shrimp....THATS A SHRIMP..

  • The general public of america are used to 'Shrimp', while the general public of Australia are used to 'prawn'. Paul Hogan knew this and so called them 'shrimp' in this ad - which was directed at America.

  • we call fucking shrimps prawns your not aussie your nothing

  • he liked it here so much he pissed off to california

  • " 'Cause we talk the same language". Who wrote this shit and did they finish primary school?

  • Be careful. Australians people can get very racist and violent.

  • @BoxxyFan WTF you on about???

  • @mgospeed31 then you've never had to deal with our government

  • shrimp is a american word

  • @dreamdoll1988 its from austrailia (you have bad english!)

  • @superyoshi4444 prawn is the aussie word im australian myself so bite ur tongue

  • @dreamdoll1988 bite my dick

  • @superyoshi4444 you dont have 2 get all snotty because u realised ur the one with the bad english think before u write down useless crap

  • @dreamdoll1988 I have better english than you! and you are usesless crap!

  • @dreamdoll1988

It's not a fucking 'american word'. It's a type of crustacean! Different than prawn. They are two separate life forms. Jesus.

  • @Hoboinaboxdestroyer if thats what u believe maybe you should look it up plus the picture on google retard geez your making ur self seem stupid

  • @dreamdoll1988 Shrimp and prawns are NOT the same thing, they are similar but not the same. Look up the "prawn" article on wikipedia and it will tell you what the differences are.

  • @Hoboinaboxdestroyer Yes but in Australia we call shrimp prawns.

  • @satojinnthehero

    As you wish.

  • @dreamdoll1988 hence why they say shrimp because this add is directed at americans? dumb ass ?

  • Paul hogan get back on the tv and do some more shows. You are certainly a great Aussie icon. Keep pissing off the ATO and can you start on liar Julia gillard.

  • PUT ANOTHER SHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIMP ON THE BARBAY

  • @electricmaster23 I've heard plenty of people make this quote, but they always seem to say "throw" another shrimp on that proverbial barbie

  • Woah! He says "slip" another shrimp on the barbie. all this time you lot had me thinking it was "put"...

  • Good ad.....it makes me want to go to Australia and I'm not even American!

  • Damn I'd like to say G'day to that chick in the yellow bikini too...

  • Fml

  • I'm never calling that number! o_O

  • :34

  • So we've got Paul to thank for this. Cripes mate, I wish you'd said something else.

  • Australia the land of white faces... thanks paul.

  • Thus our stereo-type :P

  • I think when they made the commercial, they knew that they (Australians) didn't call prawns shrimp. But if you're trying to get tourists from America with your commercial, you can't really call prawns... prawns. Because in America we only know about shrimp, which are small, but look like prawns.

If they said "I'll put another prawn on the barbie" Americans would probably say "What's a prawn?"

  • @HunterXray So he's fine with saying shrimp instead of prawns in an ad, but when he's in Crocodile Dundee he has to be so exaggeratingly occa that he confuses most Australians, let alone the American audience? Pick an intended audience and stick to it, Paul! Make us out to be normal and welcoming, or make us so strange we scare Americans awa, but when you try to do both you confuse everyone!

  • @HunterXray But...I'm American and I know what a prawn is. I'm pretty sure most Americans know what a prawn it.

  • @FGSFDSenterprises I've never seen prawns sold in a store, at lease where I live anyway. Only shrimp. Making me believe most Americans don't know what a prawn is. :)

  • @FGSFDSenterprises This....

  • @HunterXray Southerners know what prawns are. But American prawns are fresh water critters.

  • Come to Australia! Drive on the wrong side of the road! Fsck a kangaroo!

  • @ofusriley Drive on the correct side of the road you mean.

  • @ofusriley Sorry mate, most countries drive on the left.... So YOUR driving on the wrong side there champ.

  • @gnarkillkicksass that's incorrect there mate, most countries actully drive on the right, it only you island folks who insist on doing your left driving thing.

  • @powereater And Europe, India, Most of Asia (excluding pretty much only China) and most parts of Africa and about half the southern hemisphere. I'd say it's 50/50.

  • @gnarkillkicksass they drive on the right in europe mate, cept for england. india and japan are pretty much the only ones in asia that goes in the left , all that's left is australia and NZ. there be a reason i said "island folks" mate.

  • @powereater Most driving was originally done in the left hand lane world wide, even America did it. Weirdly you Canadians seemed to have been a bit confused and drove on both sides till you became uniformed.

  • He is a national treasure

  • Crocodile Dundee, Yahoo Serious and Steve Irwin - the unholy trinity of kitsch Australiana.

  • And it's not a fucken shrimp, it's a prawn!

  • Three words - cringe, cringe, cringe!

  • @25maxoz Cause he was trying to use it in a pun and also to say the Australian persona was innocent so Australia would make money!

  • @25maxoz Be proud that Paul Hogan is such a shrewd and appealing actor. It helped make Australia rich.

  • @andrewkilroyable lol you're a spastic if you think american tourism made Australia rich.

  • @stuizke Richer, if you must be such a bitch for detail from a 70 character message. Next, yeah actually I wasn't just talking about american tourism, so you're dumb. Since you're obsessive-compulsive and dumb, I guess that makes you a better spastic than I could ever hope to achieve.

  • @25maxoz At least Paul Hogan is understandable...

  • Isn´t it "prawn" in Australia?

  • @whythat0 Yeah.

  • @whythat0 yeah but its directed at Americans. its not like were advertising tourism to our own country.

  • @XJayStudiosX No but from what i´ve heard most australian people were quite irritated at this comersial?

  • @whythat0 Fucken Oath we were. We dont eat Shrimp we eat Prawns.

  • @blinky123abc The word "shrimp" sounds sissy.

Here in Sweden we say "Räka" ;D

  • Did the dingo take your shirt too?

  • AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!

  • ashamed to be australian!

  • I remeber the first time i heard this expression and thought, what? why? it'd just fall in...

  • Comment removed

  • If I go that extra shrimp better still be on that barbie for me :l

  • You need a holiday, a feared nigga holiday.

  • I love this ad.. much better than the crappy tourism ads they're releasing now

  • WRONG!

  • PAUL HOGAN > CHUCK NORRIS > SHRIMP ON THE BHARBEH

  • I love Paul Hogan, and honestly aussie's could have it worse.. You could of had George Bush as a spokesperson for your country for eight years.. Enough said!

  • @MattyHatty89 Point taken, but really....I would love to look like either of them when I get to my mid-40s (as was Hogan when this ad was taped).

  • Paul isn't an Australian, he IS Australia

  • And he's going to sue the tax dept. for all they're worth.

    ..God I love him.

  • After all the stuff Hoags did for AUS tourism... He bought billions to the economy - He even helped out on the world cup bid while the ATO was trying to F him. P.Hogan IS Australia

  • Anyone who bad mouths hoags is a fucking dickhead and you should get the fuck out if Australia! Hoags is an Aussie icon! That ad was great for Australia! Anyone who doesn't like it can piss off, your not Aussie!

  • @goodie086 Thats right! He's SOOO Aussie that he's not even paying Aussie taxes

  • why do they always advertise Australia like every single one of us Australians are fucking Stereotypes?

  • it's a shame all those chicks are like 60 now

  • @zoquibax

    LMFAO

  • CHUCK NORRIS' AUSTRALIAN BROTHER

  • @drufuss2006

its time to make Paul Hogan Jokes similar to Chuck Norris now LOL

  • this guys a full blown aussie bogan LOL

  • australian fuckhead. fair dinkum hahahahah god theyve got annoying slang

  • SO THIS IS WHERE THE SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE STARTED! *o*

  • He said shrimp in the ad because Americans wouldn't have understood what was meant by prawns. I've never heard anyone over hear call it shrimp.

  • 1.we dont eat shrimps >;( or much sea food

2.we dont say g'day or what ever he just said in south american

    3. why sydney ?? it's not they only city in australia

  • @Xfanganimation Well, apparently in South Australia the Aussie accent isn't as noticeable as the rest of the country. I don't mean to direspect you are anything, but really, lighten up mate.

  • @ImTooHotForMyself umm yeah i might live in the city but i have been to the country side and not even them sound like paul hogan

  • @Xfanganimation A we dont care if someone slips up

    B why do you care

C sydneys the capital and what the hell have i got to show in perth a river ,useless bell tower, and old bertie.

  • @lochlandb You need a geography lesson if you think Sydney is the capital. It's the capital of NSW in the same way Perth is the capital of WA, but capital of Australia? Ever heard of Canberra?

  • @nupthatisit went there for robotic dance comp but meh canberra is a bit understated like here in perth so i forgot but now im slightly more intelegent then before

  • Best part of this commercial is when he says we have the funny accent. Even most aussies dont speak like him. Well not the ones I met anyway. I was really dissapointed. And none of them had boomarangs or large hunting knives. My childhood was crushed the day I met real aussies. Screw Disney Land and the assholes that put me on the same boat for pirates of the carribean with those aussie tourists. You guys should be sued for false advertising.

  • @IronManOfficialguy its not like we want to be looked like idiots some how americans think we sound south american and live in a waist land and when i went to america people thought i was from england =.= its a scam so america thinks australia is very hot and every one looks like shit so when you come here in summer shitty clothing you have to buy more things, australians are very embarrassed of paul hogan

  • @Xfanganimation Ahh cmon I think your being a little hard on old Paul. My comment was meant as sarcasm. Crocodile Dundee was a good movie and he seems like a nice guy. Anyway Paul Hogan is kind of special to us americans. Many of us loved his movies when we were kids and some of us fell in love with the idea of the outback. I think he is more good than bad for the aussie image. Same for Steve Irwin.

  • @IronManOfficialguy americans like paul more than australians, when i was a kid i watched disney movies so i had no idea that americans actually like paul hogan it might be good for you but for us its embarrassing and false australia doesn’t just have white people they could at least put in an european or and asian from australia

  • he is so cool!

  • so this is where the "throw another shrimp on the barbie" came from... everytime british and americans try and mock australian's by saying that... We are like WTF... Since when do we say that....!! as an aussie, whose been born and grown here. in all my 20 years.... i'v said that.... we don't say Shrimp... we say Prawns.... and very rarely do aussies eat prawns over red meat anyway!! so this is so wrong.... the 80's..?? what was the tourist board thinking!! too bus smoking harsh..

  • @paddlepopkid correction** iv never said that..

P.s this commercial is so embarrassing.... as an aussie... i dislike it so much.... thats not even our accent... by far...! what country is this accent from.... coz im from Sydney... and we don't sound anything like that all.... Paul Hogan... go die.... no wonder the Poms mock us alot!

  • How much money did that ad bring to Australia? The ATO should piss off and forget his tax bill. If they don't Arthur Donger might get on their case.

  • I bet he wouldnt say that these days. More like good riddens Australia

  • I might have an outer for him, me and a mate of mine, he's a plumber, I'm an ex builder, we're working on a script together. It rockz, if I'm any judge. Gotta take it to the next Cleary workshop.

  • This was the commercial that ruined Australia for americans forever.

  • Thats not a shrimp. THIS is a shrimp!

  • @Danno2112 Its a fucking prawn! Tourism Australia will go to hell.

  • @Danno2112 Funny!!! :-D

  • 'Although you lot do have a funny accent" lol i'll say...

  • so that's where the shrimp on the barby thing came from?

  • @rjkral

That's legit I wouldn't of noticed that if you didn't point that out. I thought I was gonna laugh when i saw the video because of always hearing the phrase "throw another shrimp on the Barbie" but he doesn't even say that and when he says slip an extra shrimp and holds up that huge prawn I shat myself haha.

  • Put another shrimp on the barby!

  • lol in germany we call it shrimp too^^

  • Prawns are cockroaches of the sea. So basically Hoges was placing a giant cockroach on the BBQ to entice Americans to come visit Australia.

  • Ugh the shrimp and prawn debate still goes on!! Think about it guys, YES we call shrimp PRAWNS but there's two huge reasons it's shrimp for the ad: (1) The yanks understand shrimp and its an ad for them (extremely important that they GET it) and (2) the joke is he says SHRIMP and it's the massive prawn he holds up is anything but shrimp-ish.

  • more like an ad for sydney!

  • where is the winfield commercial??????

  • bloody oath!

  • .

    HAHA oh man

    that made my day

  • This add was made to appeal to america and they don't say prawn they say shrimp imagion the look on there face when they ask for shrimp and the man replies what the fuk r u talking about

  • im Australian and every one calls them prawns, wtf this shrimp shit

  • There called prawns, mate.

  • That was cool to see. I've had a fascination with Australia ever since "Crocodile Dundee" and have always wanted to visit.

  • As to the prawn/shrimp thing, it's actually a "false difference". What Canadians and Americans call "shrimp" are actually shrimp and what Australians call "prawns" are actually prawns. North Americans tend to eat shrimp, which are small while Australians tend to eat the significantly larger prawn.

  • @Hawkathon both can be slipped onto the barbie though

  • remember his movie. when the thug pulls out a knife and he says "That's no knife, this is a knife" and pulls out a hunting knife. I thought that was cool.. but then reality kicked in and I thought in the real world he would have been shot, beaten, stabbed, maybe raped, and robbed. But probably not in that order. Just saying.

  • lol.. this commercial is so funny..

  • jesus christ! what kind of shrimp do y'all have in australia?

  • Australians use the word *prawn* rather than shrimp. Because the commercial was commissioned for broadcast in the United States, the change was made to limit audience confusion.

  • :18 to :23 Crikey, have a Captain Cook at that sheila!

  • To limit audience confusion... instead it created a saying about Aussies that no Aussies ever use XD

Mhm. No confusion there, no sirree.

  • Struth, mate, it did create confusion. But don't be too much of a grizzle,

Sorry for the earbashin, but before this ad came out, Oz was #78 on the most desired holiday destination list for Yanks. Just 3 months after the this ad aired, Oz jumped to #7, and soon leapt to #1 or #2, staying there for about 20 years.

Reckon you Aussies made a few quid off us Yanks, mate? Bloody oath!

  • @selatik1

prawn on the barbie sounds 1000X better...and I'm a bloody yank.

  • Reckon!

  • you just copied and pasted that off a website, i just read it.

  • @senorchipotle well... there called prawns for one thing.

  • @senorchipotle We call them prawns in Australia, bro.

  • if the government are still trying to get a new tourism ad they should take some notes from the 80s or just use this video again.
