I've never watched this version before. That man of the west doesn't exist in the original version. The story of this version will probably be different from the original one.If my assumption is right,I will watch this version immediately.
I actually like this version, not because it introduced the character to the world outside Asia, but because the American-made scenes blended very well with the rest of the movie, in a very well done narrative by Raymond Burr, and it didn't try to deny the fact it's Japan being crushed, and the japanese being the ones dealing with it. Unlike other Japanese Live Special Effects series which were HEAVILY Americanized. Like one of the recent Ultraman shows and the Super Sentai shows.
I think more then anything the fact the Hays Code was still enforced at the time Gojira was released had more to do with why the dubbed verson was butchered, hence why scenes that made Godzilla's rampage in Tokyo seem more like a genuine disaster were cut or altered, in addition to company being cheap and adding the Burr footage, but Burr still did an impressive job givein that he was simply cut and pasted in, and his pressence shows that Godzilla is a threat to the entire world not just japan
@Dinosorable remember, only one of other of the godzilla movies was made in america (the anthony broderick one) the rest of them were made by toho in japan. america just might have not of dubbed them
@TheMotionMan112= Hey don't blame America. I had nothing to do with this. For all we know, Canada was involved too. Alot of Japanese stuff is dubbed in Canada. Think before you go shooting your mouth.
@bubbanater07 well, if it werent for us you americans would be starting wars with EVERY country for resources, we provide you guys with lots of trees and oil. think about stuff like this before posting your anti-canadian jibberish
I'm looking forward to the 2012 update, but I can't help but wonder how they're going to update Godzilla's origins for the post 9/11 world, since fear of the unknown and mistrust of intentions have taken the place of fear of the atomic bomb
More then anything it was the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Bomb Tests the US was conducting after the war, and the H-Bomb accident involving the fishing boat Lucky Dragon No. 5 that inspired the original Godzilla, and Godzilla became the most visible symbol of the fear of atomic weapons and for Japan they has every right to be afraid since they've experience nuclear nightmares four times (Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Lucky Dragon No. 5 and the meltdown caused by the quake)
WOW I LOVE GODZILLA ESPECIALLY THIS MOVIE'S DARN INTIMIDATING...!!! CANT WAIT FOR 2012 GODZILLA TOO!!! HOPE IT WILL B A SMASH HIT AND WIN LOADS OF OSCARS ;DDD
I hate they way Hollywood came along and Americanised a character who was meant to symbolise the evil of American nuclear weapons. This movie is a classic, unlike the crap that America shoves down out throats!
@VenomShock damn right! He had one good thing, LOTR. King Kong was terrible. I can only imagine what damage he'd to to Godzilla, whose already been disgraced once by American filmmakers.
See, back in '54 they didn't have the effects that they have nowadays...and the "dark film" category made this even more Scary...Godzilla looked very imagineable up there on the black-and-white screen, adding to the effect...of course, compared to today's standards of effects with films such as "Alien", "Predator", "Jurassic Park", "King Kong", "Lord of the Rings", etc., where all looks as realistic as hell, this was sub-par, but we couldn't get enough...and it scared the, er... "poop" out of us
my freind thinks mario and sonic is stronger than godzilla i said fuck you his the king of monsters lived for 50 years and he has atomic breath mario and sonic will die
The narrator of this trailer sounds so heartless and excited introducing Godzilla while Godzilla obviously destroying mankind :))... Wanna watch this though
in all honesty, the guy who did the trailer actually kind of ruined the whole idea of it. this godzilla movie is, in my opinion, the best out of all of them mainly because it's a classic, but also because this is probably the only godzilla movie, mad ein japan, that JUST had godzilla. it could also be labled as classic horror just because of the black and white, and the inspiration behind it. this movie was suppose to reflect the tragedy at Heroshima. over all a VERY good movie.
well I watched this film on dvd when I got in from the pub last night it is the first time I ever seen this it is fantastic Godzilla is badass scenes with Raymond Burr work relly well there is some Japanese diologe in there but it is most however the rest was dubbed over in english. now I have heard that the origanol cut is very dark in tone, but this version i'd say is quite dark I like how the film starts withe reporter layed in the rubble
For years I ahve been looking for this film, when I heard that the DVD was being released heard in the UK only the origonal cut of 1954 was released I lurned the US recut version was avalible in the USA but not in Britain WHAT? I am glad to say that managed to get hold it (at last) on import via Amozan & it plays rather well in my DVD player
Why did Americans have to ruin Gojira this badly, they just had to americanize it right.Oh,Americans won't be able to understand this so lets chop this amazing film up and give an American narator for the film because thats not racist at all. Also lets cut the dark post war documentary feel to Gojira because us dumbass Americans won't understand story all we want to see is action. They made this a cheap B movie and they took out almost everything that made the orignial great except G's rampage.
The best monster film in my grandparents generation. Love that movie, despite the fact the boot-legged effects weired me out when I was little. SEE GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS-LOL. :D
@Fpockets It was just made for the trailer I guess. The original version of this movie (without raymond burr) was released with the roar heard in the film, so I assume this is a stock roar used for the trailer.
Godzilla is the greatest monster in history without question, I had this film when i was younger an i loved it. The black an White Film really added to the creature's effects.
I hope Godzilla is around for the next 50 years just so my kids can appreciate this Classic Creature.
Omg !!! that is Raymond Burr , wow Perry Mason , I'll be a monkeys uncle , I never knew that after all these years , wow he sure was in the prime of his youth then & soo was I must say !!! nothing is better than Godzilla , still the best and always will be , others just come and go , but Godzilla remains !!!!
@JeterSwisherFan88 He was added for the American market, as they felt an all Japanese film wouldn't sell, as he was a popular actor at that time.
As it stands, either version works well, as a sense of doom and destruction prevails...the Japanese are barely on their feet after WW2 and a horror borne of the A-Bomb reminds them that they will suffer worse the second time around..
Good movie, I used to own it... Hell i had almost all the Godzilla films when i was younger but my brother let one of his friends in when i wasn't home so when i went to catch up all were missing but the damn 1998 Zilla film. Wish they would have taken that one an left the others.
Oh well, I'll have to Re-buy it if i ever find a store that sell's all the classic Godzilla films.
Been a fan since the early 80's, Glad to see he's still around.
The special effects were actually quite good for the time. Imagine how the guys who built all those beautiful miniatures felt when they were smashed, crushed, and burnt.
I love Japan, it's culture and after seeing this movie 20 times, I want to learn japanese and visit one day the country ! Luckly (or unluckly, depends the point of view), Gojira won't be there to welcome me...
japan copies europeans to acheive success in modern society, they started in the very early 1900's to make a more europeanized military to defeat the russians before the russian civil war and Vladimir Lenin
Being a little busy... anyway, that's the Meiji Restauration period you're takking about and lucky the Japanese did copy European style in 1886, otherwise they might have finish like the chinese at the same period : invaded with international concessions.... yet, Ilike your point of reason
You can't beat a classic. The black and white give the film a tone of horror, dispair, and bleakness. When I first saw this film I had nightmares about it. I have seen all the Godzilla films after it........but this one (this first one), frighten me. It was said Toho made this film to tell the world of the horror and the fear of the Atomic Age and it's weapons. Good Film and and the action is well....better than some of the stupid giant monster movies that are made now.
Anybody know where in th ehell I can find this movie. All this stupid site has is stupid people trying to make there own with fuckin toys or they just put trailers on hear. I'm sorry if I sound bitchy but hell you must admit it is very annoying. thanks if you can help me and if you cant thanks for trying.
I love that movie .. has a cheesy reputation because it is a guy in a rubber suit but it is really a good movie
The scene where the children were singing and they were showing the death and destruction was actually very dramatic ... and the music was very well done.
Also the American verision was editted amazingly well considering Raymond Burr's part was added in 2 yrs later.
I've seen this, when i was 13 I watch Monster Night on BBC in 1998 Then I went to Class I Talk about Godzilla Old movies Wearing a Customer he did Saw the Old Movie Before.
Wait so what's the movie called again?

and never knew when it would return to wreck more destruction on them.

japan copies europeans to acheive success in modern society, they started in the very early 1900's to make a more europeanized military to defeat the russians before the russian civil war and Vladimir Lenin

When you're 6 years old and watch this on a 12 inch black and white TV it scares the shit out of you.

Godzilla is like "Citizen Kane" in the B movie franchise. In my opinion.
The 60s and 70s movies are classic, but kind of a joke to the series. But the 80s, 90s and 2000s are spectacular.

Um... No? Guys below me especially. "King of the Monsters" was released in 1956......
The original "Gojira" was released in 1954, therefore that is the first movie...

I love that movie .. has a cheesy reputation because it is a guy in a rubber suit but it is really a good movie
The scene where the children were singing and they were showing the death and destruction was actually very dramatic ... and the music was very well done.
Also the American verision was editted amazingly well considering Raymond Burr's part was added in 2 yrs later.
cool posting !
