Je ne me lasse pas d'écouter et regarder Valentina Lisitsa, jouer l'appassionata. C'est une pure merveille. La façon qu'elle a de faire courir ses doigts sur le clavier, tout semble si naturel. Quelle maitrise! Magnifique. Incomparable.
Careful, I was flamed for my comment just like yours. To me it seems like an algorithm, she bears no resemblance to the passion beethoven himself must have felt and shown as he played his own piece.
@DanielaClapp some would say the ability to express and create a touching and deeply emotional moment with in the exact rhythmic scheme of the music with out excessive rubato and/or other physical antics that have nothing to do with the production of sound is be a good thing
I need more fullness of sound! I need more beethoven! This is too early romantic for me, Beethoven may have been, but he was a totally different genre. He was earthy, obvious, almost lower-class music you could put it - indeed he made his music for the masses, while being incredibly deep music. While Chopin could be considered as a aristocratic genre of grace and charm, much more suited to Valentina. I am making NO discrimination of classes here, just general charasteristics of the music!
Beautiful! My soul could derive it's energy from this movement... hoping to finish this piece before I turn sixteen... I've listened to her interpretations the whole way through, gave some other pianists interpretations a chance. Not a snowball's chance in hell that I would listen to any other than this one... BRAVA!

All your videos are terrific! Far and away the best pianist on YouTube. And I don't just mean the playing (which of course is excellent), but you also put the camera where it *should* be, and the sound is actually quite good. I just hate hearing a great piece of music while staring at paintings of the composer or listening to someone play on an old upright in their living room. I'm devouring these. Thanks so much!
Although this mvmt. is so beautiful she playes it like she wanna destroy the piano. Check Solomon Cutner's version out and you will see that his interpretion is by far the greater one! For all the haters: yes everyones opinion is different! so stfu and go watch it. Make it your opinion.
As much as I suppose everyone has their own tastes, when I think of the Appassionata, I think of how she plays it. The way of which she puts all of her emotion into it and her passion. It may look like she wants to 'destroy' the piano, but the emotion is obviously there, and she does it perfectly.
the second movement is so peaceful, the part that starts at 2.45 sec is superb. its excellent played wih so much feeling. i can listen to this movement again and again. thanks!
Valentina... I have just heard You for the first time today. You are a breathtaking musician. I listened to Your first movement earlier, and I am currently in the middle of listening to the second. Such subtle yet profound beauty. Than You!
Val has a mother's caress here in the gentle dignity and love that she imparts to this movement! As wonderful as she is when it comes time to "burn down the house" on the big, fast difficult pieces she really displays her talent (for more than just playing the notes) on these "quiet, gentle" pieces! Astonishing in all she shares! Thank you, Val!
This piece of music is spiritual. All the glory goes to God through Our Lord Jesus Christ. Sublime. I also love the sound of some early jazz chords at the beginning of this piece.
Hi Valentina. My name is Zuzana and I am from Slovakia. Do you think that you could come and make a concert here in Slovakia? or Germany or somewhere in Europe... I would be very happy if I could see your concert.
If Beethoven had known that there would ever be someone like Valentina Lisitsa, he would have definitely made the 2nd movement more difficult to play :-)
As a matter of the fact, Valentina, you are really the best :-)
Interesting. I just said to my girlfriend something similar while I was listening to the 1st mov. I told her sometimes Beethoven has phrases and rhythms that would fit perfectly in modern music, even popular music...
Valentina, thank you so much for your dedication and talent. Listening and watching you play has brought joy and calm to my life. Sure I would like to gush about your talent, but I know you get so much of that. So I will simply say thanks, and you seem like a very nice person.

I've seen some of you're videos, and you're pretty talented!!
This masterpiece is one of the hardest ones to play.. and you're not bad at it!
I can imagine that you've been practicing for at least 15 years.. you have let a lot of thing behind for your instrument.. I've done quite the same thing, but you're playing much better than me I assure you..
Maybe can't you put just a smile on you're face, it will make us feel that you're enjoying what you're doing, not being sad..
@cmoimoro Did you just direct that at Lisitsa? "Pretty talented" "Not bad at it".. she isn't pretty talented, she's world class! And i can't imagine anybody playing this piece with a huge silly grin across their face.. (well, lang lang maybe)
Yeah it's brilliant but I can't see myself listening to it very often... weighs too much if that makes sense.. and don't really like the theme all that much
while the third blows my mind always :)
just and opinion of course... could change after i listen to it a few more times...
i don t like 1 st aswell... btw if u do anything over 15 times you will like it 100 %. If you it your most hated food 15 times in a row or listen to music 15 times in a row. ;p
@pinkfloyddwc Did it change? :P Two years have passed since your comment.
I thought the same of this movement once: I found it OK, but nothing special. I really liked the first and third movements the most. But now? This movement is the absolute culmination of this sonata for me - I love it so much! The moment at 3:43 gives me the chills... Personally I cannot understand how some people say that Valentina plays this 'without emotion' - what a nonsense claim! But, they are opinions in the end..
Wow!! Here's an exemple of a pianist with both truly godlike-transcendental technique and musicianship! I first came to know of Valentina's work by her Chopin's Etudes DVD, which is brilliant, just as any other of her Romantic virtuoso repertoire. But after this Beethoven I have no doubt she stands among the greatest pianists of history! The way she captures the essense of this piece (talking about the 3 movs here) is really the work of a genius. Hope I can one day attend to one of her concerts

Music Man, you can't tell Valentina to sit up straight! And it is part of the emotion of the playing. This video loaded up slowly so I watched Valentina's hands: The little nicks and chips on the nails the little freckle on the left hand. It made the astonishing seem simple and normal. Wait, I mentioned little flaws....
Many listeners are inclined to treat the middle movement of concertos, sonatas as a piece of connective tissue between two more interesting "organs" - they want excitement, fireworks. This set of 3 videos shows that Valentina knits the whole piece together perfectly. For me, its sonorous, passionate message remains and builds from start to finish. Fantastic, Valentina - awe-inspiring !
