First, I believe in freedom of expression so I don't much care for people who run around trying to prevent speech, or illicit apologies from those who are not sorry for what they said, and would do so again if you weren't watching.
However, my person opinion is that these gentlemen were making fun of this man, and denigrating him, his experience, etc. Sadly, this is just the kind of mental garbage that passes for entertainment. Very sad for a once elegant, polite people.
@shonstar I think if you have seen much of Stephen Fry, you would realise that he goes out of his way not to be rude to anyone, and is a very polite and considerate person. I assure you he would never make fun of someone. Some of the banter may have seemed to make light of the bombing, but most of the humour was focused on discussing "luck" and the efficiency of the Japanese trains.

I think the main source of humour was that Japan was and is so incredibly efficient that even a nuclear bomb blast did not stop the trains running, whereas in the UK, leaves on the line in the North means hellish delays in the south!

@MrTommydbone I'm a big fan of British comedy but I think what many Brits need to understand is that as brilliant as British dry humor is, not everyone has the same taste or able to accept it. I see a lot of British complains abt Americans' sense of humor and how they would never get dry humor, it may be true, but that doesn't make them bad or wrong or inferior in anyway. If non-Brits get offended by dry humor it's because they are as surprised by the comedy as you are by their reaction to it.
bloody ridiculous that the BBC bothered to apologize for this. Should have told the Japanese to get a grip or get stuffed! A bad sign that this once great institution is losing its integrity, as are many other once good institutions in the UK. QI is awesome, on a par with Attenborough's nature documentaries, learning facts in an amicable fashion.

Everyone here seems to be very concerned with whether the men in hawaiian garb, snickering at "bouncing off a nuke", with a ridiculous pic of this man in between two atomic bombs, were "making fun". Clearly they were.
I'm not against the use of Nuclear Power or weapons, and certainly Imperial Japan was a dangerous menace...but if someone asked me to present this segment, I would pass. The whole thing denotes a lack of class and personal dignity.

I assure you he would never make fun of someone. Some of the banter may have seemed to make light of the bombing, but most of the humour was focused on discussing "luck" and the efficiency of the Japanese trains.

Alan Davies "bounced off" comment and Rob Brydons radioactive glass of water joke were both cheap and stupid (not surprising given one comes from Alan Davies, who I dont hate but is always capable of some of the crappier stuff out of QI).

I see a lot of British complains abt Americans' sense of humor and how they would never get dry humor, it may be true, but that doesn't make them bad or wrong or inferior in anyway. If non-Brits get offended by dry humor it's because they are as surprised by the comedy as you are by their reaction to it.

Though i do not agree with him and do not believe what he says is true, you do have to understand that as civilians we have NO IDEA about what REALLY happened during that time period. Since we were little we have been taught it one way, blindly. This goes for everything, the lunar landings to the holocaust. Now personally i believe these are true, I just think everyone should keep an open mind, and not push away possibilities because they are different from what you were taught.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this section of QI. Informative and funny. The only jokes revolve around the definition of 'lucky' and that Japan is so effective and efficient that they can keep trains running during a nuclear war, while we fail to keep them running when the wrong type of leaf of a thin coat of snow falls. There's also a slight joke about British food. If you find offense at this, you're seeking and injecting it where it patently doesn't exist.
