Honestly, not sure what people aren't getting about the joke. Tim Meltregger insisted that James had to say "3-hole punch" not "3-hole punchER", because 3-hole punch was "WAY funnier!" Of course it isn't "way funnier", it's a stupid thing to get so worked up over, and the cast knew that too. So basically they're making fun of Meltregger by taking his statement to the extreme, that the phrase "3-hole punch" is so "way funny", all you have to do is say it and it makes people burst out laughing.

One day a writer stops a scene too tell James too say three hole punch instead of three whole puncher because three hole punch is a lot funnier. Of course it isn't, but when they burst out laughing at "three hole punch" they're acting like it's incredibly funny. It's sarcastic humor, and it really isn't that complicated.

I love this show and everything. But this has got to be the lamest running gag I have ever seen. But hey, whatever gets you through the day, right? I have been trying to figure this joke out forever and i think i finally did. So the guy who wrote it said that 3-whole punch is way funnier, but the truth is that it's not that much funnier and he was being over excited about it. So now they start cracking up every time they say it to make fun of the guy?

So what they do is they say lines and redirect it to the topic of the 3-hole punch and start laughing for no reason - because 3-hole punch is funny :D

Like Dule said "We just say "You know what we need right now? a 3-hole punch" *everybody starts laughing for no reason"
