As an inept american, I am not not well versed in "Australian Culture". I do know that many people of adventurous spirit had to persevere against harsh conditions, and that is absolutely something to be proud of. I don't however see our adoption of Octoberfest, Cinco de Mayo, or St. Patricks day as diluting our culture. Rather another day to have fun.
Check out our halloween costume, "Halloween 2011 Hobo's Portland"
is this a joke? you act like it's some conspiracy. it's a harmless holiday...at least in the usa. americans can't help it if some australians abuse the holiday. perhaps it's best that a convict nation not celebrate halloween.
Last year is wasnt every big because it wasnt on a weekend.. But Its getting massive in my town in Queensland.. People here dress up and walk around.. Its amazing!
Australia has little culture anyway. There are very few good shows and films anyway. Beside American stuff and traditions tend to sound alot better than England's (No Offense) but I don't like their shows except quizzes and little Britain and Might Boosh. Plus what else can you replace Halloween with... a day where we hug rabbits or stuff like that. Australia has little culture because of it not being just one nation. Its made of many countries, so don't bother talking about our culture.
Well halloween is balancing on par/equal of liking as christmas. Why do people do christmas which isn't even Australian but don't do halloween which start with a celtic background. Maybe Australians are becoming scaredy cats and losed ther courage in the unknown void of spookiest. don't compare Halloween with that of valentine or whatever small day celebration. i want a day to celebrate horror things not just once a year christmas. Don't make Australia boring for us multicultural Australians.
well america and england and canada and many other countries do it so why dont we?
i dont care if a few australians think it all american bull.. and whatever but it s just another holiday for kids. i think australia should add it to the calender!
I actually don't mind giving out treats to the T'O'T-ers, as long as they are polite, and don't push or shove, or snatch 'n' grab. If someone turned up at my door and demanded that I give them stuff, I'd be telling them "No". I find the younger children are generally the best mannered ones.
Halloween rules, australia should accept it much more , we hardly have any good holidays that family and friends can get together and have a good time , stop trying to kill it!!!
halloween is awsome i live in australia and i had a party went trick or treating an d made ny house in to a haunted house it was awsome and he is an idiot it is from eroupe mainly scottLAND AND IRLAND SO SUPPORT HALLOWEEN
@The5jacko5 Finally someone who enjoys it in Australia i live in Australia and i hate it when people forget it. Who fucking cares what country its from there seems to be an American Australian rivalry here. I think more Australians should enjoy it and not be grumpy fucks people are just trying to have fun. Anyway if you are going trick or treating this year on October 31st Good Luck
Should have an unofficial rule that any house decorated for Halloween is participating for Trick or Treat.
Just so the Kids know where to knock without being disapointed. It is both a fun and dangerous time of the year.
We don't take part but we do stock some goodies for that day just in case. This year we got 1 knock :) so we gave them lollies. They were really happy too.
Yes Irish tredition, Great!!!!and what's does the irish church give, sweets and molest kids , great tredition like fucking hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
get you facts right ass hole is an pagan tradition from the celts as in REAL celts from Germany France ect. pick up a history book. same goes too you GrahamAndFriends its people like you that are the reason people think our country is a fucking backwater, you uneducated idiot
I love Halloween. I had loads of kids knocking on my door. It was beautiful this year. There was a chill in the air, the wind was blowing and everyone had their houses and yards decorated with ghoulish things. I handed out candy apples and popcorn balls. Some people make their whole front yard into a grave yard. Children are very well mannered and love coming to my house. I had a life size black coffin on my porch complete with black roses.
he hit the nail on the head about the shops adopting it to make money.
last year when the little kids came to the door my dad gave them chocolates that were 2 years past the used-by date, then when he ran out of those he put the hose on them when they came round
halloween is an irish tradition adopted by the north americans.have some fun aussies i know you like enjoying yourselves.there are enough irish there to get it going.
because halloween is not usually celebrated in australia when trick or treaters went to my aunties house for the first time she didnt know what to give them so she gave them oranges
Americanisation is occuring.. But at the end of the day a majorty of the world practices democray thus, its a popularity contest, and currently, the american culture is ahead..
I had 1 group of trick or treaters & I was not prepared (had no lollies) so they vandalised my car :(
I was totally devastated. When I went around door to door asking if anyone knew who the kids belonged to everyone treated me like some grumpy old woman (I'm 29) i.e 'Oh it's just a bit of fun' So IMO, by all means let the kids dress up or have parties, but don't shove it down my throat. I've experienced halloween overseas & it's wonderful, but it's just not common enough to be fun here. Sorry.
I have no problems with people in Australia having Halloween parties if they wish. I would object to my peace in my home being invaded.
In USA the expectation is that you will have lots of treats made up to give to the kids when they door knock otherwise they play a trick on you. I along with most Australians am not going waste time making up heaps of lolly treats to hand out.
Its a bit hard to hve Halloween in New Zealand too. Halloween in America conicnides usually with late autumn and stark trees and cold temperatures. Here its late spring, about 20 degrees and it dosen't get dark until 8.30. You can not celebrate a 'dark' holiday at such a light time of the year
some young girls knocked at my door i throught the were trick or treating give them a few squirts with my supper soaker then relished they were moslem and not in costume oh well nect time they wont cover their faces
I'm sorry you don't have a Halloween in Australia. As an American, I know it's actually a lot of fun. That's why it's one of my favorite holidays.
And MotoroBreakz is right; you don't have to spend a fortune to have a blast for Halloween. It's completely possible to make an amazing costume from things you have around the house.
first of all, halloween is fun even though i don't go trick-or-treating, i still talk to my friends. also, don't blame the americans, blame the irish. if the irish hadn't come to america, then halloween wouldn't be here, and neither would i.
Is it really that big of a deal? You say American television has invaded the country...but American programming is far more numerous than Australian. Sure, the news is Aussie but every other channel is MTV2 or something. And what's wrong with accepting another tradition? If people are responsible with it and just have fun its totally harmless. At least in my opinion.
Mate, I'm with you. It's sepo bullshit. When kids knock on my door, I just remind them that we live in AUSTRALIA, and we don't celerbrate Halloween here.
Look, i just use it as an excuse to dress up, anyone who knows me knows if i get to put on high heels or make myself look like a zombie i'll take that as an excuse and that includes halloween. I went to my first halloween party on the weekend and it was just a bit of fun. Having said this i NEVER buy a full costume. I always compile my own by scouring op shops and other places so i don't contribute to the stores evil plans to make more money. I do a damn good job too- GET CREATIVE PEOPLE!
We celebrate Halloween in England and I used to go trick or treating every year and I really enjoyed it. Seems to be becoming more popular in Sydney. I have no probs with Halloween as it is only once a year and it is good fun. To those who dislike it I say "humbug". Bring it on :)
I never answer the door at Halloween! I hate it, I think it is a very rude, american tradition. The kids dont even know what it all really celebrates. I really hope it never takes on here! Its just an excuse for little shits to damage property!
It's silly doing it in Australia simply because most people don't just go trick or treating. Kids here just use it as an excuse to run around being little shits and throwing eggs at your house.
The impression I'm getting is that many Australians seem to think of Halloween as a bad thing. In England, its a happy time! Everyone enjoys themselves and the vast majority of people don't mind people knocking on their doors. : )
The companies are trying to cash in on it just like all the other "Hallmark" days like valentines.
It should be about the young kinds going around with their mum and dad, but its becoming more and more 16-17 year olds needing an excuse to get out of the house and run wild.
So far the most popular Halloween thing to do is dress up and have a party. Even that is too much.
Its not even traditionally the right time of the year for Halloween here, but we are following the Americans... AGAIN.
Trick or Treat Graham, You are looking at this all wrong. It is a great Holiday for kids, they get candy. Adults get to dress up in skimpy costumes and look hot as a Vampire, or a cop, ect. Woolworths ! We havn't had a Woolworths here for over 20 years. My kids got over 20lbs of candy in 1 1/2 hours, just in my little neighbor hood.
It's odd to me that they're trying to ship Halloween over there because folk here in the states have become so dastardly paranoid about criminal activity on BOTH sides that they're taking more of their celebrations to closed events and parties instead of door to door in strange neighborhoods.
America is brainwashing our kids, with crappy Basketball and Baseball ect ect lol @ the world series when only America play it bwhahaha, screw Hollaween
Halloween is taking over the world. Woooo! :) It is my favorite holiday but honestly since being an adult it seems it is more for the adults who like it then the kids. :) After all we can stay up later. *grin*
I will be doing a video or maybe just some photos in a video of my costume... going to try for the goth look but might end up looking more like a vamp instead. *laughs*
I used to do the whole trick or treat thing when I was like 8...and I'm 18 now....so we've been doing it for at least that long...I mean let kids dress up and eat lollies, it's one night and they find it fun. And since when haven't Aussies grabbed on to any reason to have a party? Honestly.
Umm yes it does, because of the the large amount of Irish decedents in the United States, traditions have been passed down throughout the years, and Halloween was one of these. Since then it obviously has become a large American tradition. Population of USA: 300million - Population of Ireland: 4million. Of course its going to look like an american tradition.
As an inept american, I am not not well versed in "Australian Culture". I do know that many people of adventurous spirit had to persevere against harsh conditions, and that is absolutely something to be proud of.
