After the Flagship debacle, the team that was working on Mythos (the Schaefers and Baldtree) decided to pick themselves up and get a game out to get the bad taste out of their mouths. 11 months later-Torchlight came out. It's a great game. The sequel will be a LOT better, too...and the same price AND multiplayer.

I'm currently giving this game a go and I'm trying to like it but it just feels like Deja Vu. Maybe it's because I played too much Diablo II and Titan Quest but I think this genre may have been done to death. I prefer the fixed world of Titan Quest rather than random samey levels which just feels fake and unsatisfying. Graphics are great though and it runs immaculately but I think I'm more looking forward to Grim Dawn than Diablo III.

Not gonna lie, nothing beats the Diablo series. It set the bar for this style of hack and slash. Also I clicked on this video for a review, not a 3 min intro about your thoughts about how this game is greater than any other game and your personal background of being a solo-gamer.

i LOVE Torchlight. Got it a couple of days ago and it's a great dungeon crawl--makes a nice break from constantly getting the shit scared outta me by DeadSpace 2, and having my system scanned in a "non-personal" way by Vivendi's StarCraft 2. My only gripe: if you want English-sounding voice acting, hire real Limeys! The guy who sez "you have triggered a trap" sounds really phony...
Ive been playing an alchemist as a tank like character, I use heavy armor, Aoe spells, one handed weapons and a shield, most of my gear has life steal and damage reflect, I have maxed out the bubble ability.
I am playing on hardcore (Perma death) for over 3 weeks and I can pull hundreds of guys and never go down below 2000 hp (2500/2000) + the damage reflect does the most damage,

I loaded up diablo 2 the other day. been 10 years since i played it. i was going to play the expansion since i never did. BUT...
well, it looks dated as hell. sorry, but it does.
...so i thought i would give torchlight a go. i tried to play it before, but it looked juvenille. I wanted to play the alchemist class since that suits my gameplay the most, but the character just looks plain stupid.
...anyway, I gave it another shot and i'm glad i did. great game. story sucks but who cares.
...yep, just loaded up diablo 2 lod again and it just looks like crap. i don't think i can play it. good memories and all. but the low resolution alone (800x600) is a deal breaker these days. can't wait for diablo 3, but at this point I would way more recommend to someone to play torchlight over diablo 2. frankly, it just kills it. What would be really cool is if they simply took diablo 2 and updated it only slightly: diablo 2 2011. Just beef up the resolution even.
@1Sandwitch1 i played it before, but i uninstall it when i reach lvl 10 cuz i need to install battlefield.. theres main quest, which is based on story line. Side quest, u dont need to do this, optional. And random quest from random dude on some random dungeon

hmm from a scale from 40 hours to 160 hours....how long is it? Is it more then 40 hours long or is it more, is there side quests at all? I could care less if its Multiplayer or not, since its "suppose" to be an RPG why would I want to play online? I am glad there isn't it means it'll be free after you buy it(or download it ;o) so you dont have to worry about anything.
I haven't played this game, yet, but I watched this video to help me decide, and I have to say, regardless of if I get the game or not the review was done very well! You obviously like the game, but that didn't hold you back from listing negative aspects, and this review just felt very complete and thoughtful. I also like how you showed various clips during the review instead of one continuous session, and then recorded your views after playing it so your concentration wasn't divided. Bravo!
I played the demo of this game on XBLA for what seemed like hours and loved it! Will be buying the full game when I have the funds (which is very soon)! :D

Just bought this from the Xbox Live Marketplace. It's amazingly addictive. I actually put down Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fable (i alternate between all 3) to play this. It was only like 12 bucks! I love it. I think it's the best thing that's happened to dungeon roamers since Diablo 2... And that's saying something.
Graphics are not all that matter in a game, it is only a fragment of what keeps players playing. And if they were bad, it would have to be quite horrible resolution for a good game play which is one of the most important things, to be canceled out....or something like that.
Definetleh (defiantly) communiteh (community). I really hate that northern accent. Please just make sure the next generation of children in your area learn how to pronounce "ee" "E" "Y"

Yeah I believe they need to be balanced with the game. The wrong type of graphics for a game is like having the wrong kind of music playing during gameplay....these things show the developer is either oblivious to what fits or more commonly ---LAZY PROGRAMMING
@Nervejunktion By that rationale, people would've stopped playing Diablo 2 years ago. It has a good art style, but it has ugly archaic graphics. Same with StarCraft, or Fallout, or System Shock 2.
Graphics are a hook, but it's gameplay that keeps peiple playing games.
Besides, Blizzard skews to the low-spec demo to maximise their playerbase. They obviously don't think graphics matter.
I still think the graphics in fallout one are awesome...hand drawn backgrounds....they seem to match the environments. Same as diablo 1 and 2...they are good graphics in my mind...perhaps a little dated today but they are good in my eyes. You are correct about gameplay being another element to make a good game.
Perhaps an example of a game thats all about gameplay and no graphics is "dopewars"...its a fun game with no graphics...

I loaded up diablo 2 the other day. been 10 years since i played it. i was going to play the expansion since i never did. BUT...
well, it looks dated as hell. sorry, but it does.
...so i thought i would give torchlight a go. i tried to play it before, but it looked juvenille. I wanted to play the alchemist class since that suits my gameplay the most, but the character just looks plain stupid.
...anyway, I gave it another shot and i'm glad i did. great game. story sucks but who cares.

...yep, just loaded up diablo 2 lod again and it just looks like crap. i don't think i can play it. good memories and all. but the low resolution alone (800x600) is a deal breaker these days. can't wait for diablo 3, but at this point I would way more recommend to someone to play torchlight over diablo 2. frankly, it just kills it. What would be really cool is if they simply took diablo 2 and updated it only slightly: diablo 2 2011. Just beef up the resolution even.

@1Sandwitch1 i played it before, but i uninstall it when i reach lvl 10 cuz i need to install battlefield.. theres main quest, which is based on story line. Side quest, u dont need to do this, optional. And random quest from random dude on some random dungeon

hmm from a scale from 40 hours to 160 hours....how long is it? Is it more then 40 hours long or is it more, is there side quests at all? I could care less if its Multiplayer or not, since its "suppose" to be an RPG why would I want to play online? I am glad there isn't it means it'll be free after you buy it(or download it ;o) so you dont have to worry about anything.

I haven't played this game, yet, but I watched this video to help me decide, and I have to say, regardless of if I get the game or not the review was done very well! You obviously like the game, but that didn't hold you back from listing negative aspects, and this review just felt very complete and thoughtful. I also like how you showed various clips during the review instead of one continuous session, and then recorded your views after playing it so your concentration wasn't divided. Bravo!

Just bought this from the Xbox Live Marketplace. It's amazingly addictive. I actually put down Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fable (i alternate between all 3) to play this. It was only like 12 bucks! I love it. I think it's the best thing that's happened to dungeon roamers since Diablo 2... And that's saying something.

Graphics are not all that matter in a game, it is only a fragment of what keeps players playing. And if they were bad, it would have to be quite horrible resolution for a good game play which is one of the most important things, to be canceled out....or something like that.

The graphics in this game were made for 7 year olds.
Comparing this game to the grandfather diablo 2 is an insult. Sure they both have items and experience ect ect....diablo 2 is a thousand times better then this retarded game. Cute looking graphics for this genre of dosent work at all and thats why 2 years later this game is long forgotten while people still play diablo 2 religiously.

Yeah I believe they need to be balanced with the game. The wrong type of graphics for a game is like having the wrong kind of music playing during gameplay....these things show the developer is either oblivious to what fits or more commonly ---LAZY PROGRAMMING

@Nervejunktion By that rationale, people would've stopped playing Diablo 2 years ago. It has a good art style, but it has ugly archaic graphics. Same with StarCraft, or Fallout, or System Shock 2.
Graphics are a hook, but it's gameplay that keeps peiple playing games.
Besides, Blizzard skews to the low-spec demo to maximise their playerbase. They obviously don't think graphics matter.

I still think the graphics in fallout one are awesome...hand drawn backgrounds....they seem to match the environments. Same as diablo 1 and 2...they are good graphics in my mind...perhaps a little dated today but they are good in my eyes. You are correct about gameplay being another element to make a good game.
Perhaps an example of a game thats all about gameplay and no graphics is "dopewars"...its a fun game with no graphics...

I found that game to be boring...I thought the graphics suited the game and I never thought they were bad or the wrong style. For me personally it was the gameplay in that game that turned me off..not the graphics.
