I've beaten this whole game... but... what are "hit points" and why are they so important?

@iLeaveYouWithHugs Hit points are what Hank calls the number of times you can be hurt before you die: for example, if you're wearing a propeller hat, you have three hit points. If you get hurt once, you lose the hat, if you get hurt again, you shrink, and if you get hurt again, you die.

You know how when you get like fire flower you have a white hat, and then when you get hit by like a shell, you go back to the red hat (for mario), and when you're hit again, you're small, and then again, you either rage quit or start again. The hit points come like like flowers and stuff.

the other day I had to babysit and all we did for about 3 hours was play this game. I was with 2 boys, 6 and 9 and it was literally one of the funnest afternoons of my life. (I also gave them a lesson on all the characters names when they began to start calling yoshi a dragon)
