I can't decide what to think of you Mark, one time you are being proud of mint condition stuff, showing off some awesome collectables, and then you have your controllers in your dog's mouth... ehm... why-how-wh... ho-why...
Wait wait wait...hold up....How would a CD rattle? It's not like a cartridge. A CD has only 2 dimensions... *shakes a CD* umm? How or what is rattling?
It is a pity that there were not so many games for the 7800. It was just such a great system. But when the Tramiels took over, they stopped developing it and brought it out after the NES, when they realized that the console market is not dead. If this thing had a better sound chip, it would be superior to the NES in ALL categories.
I miss old school gaming, now you get a plastic box that looks like a blu ray case, or dvd case and all discs look the same, is it a music cd? a dvd movie? a computer cd? a ps1, ps2, xbox, xbox 360, or ps3 disc?? back then you'd get a box with a cartridge inside and a manual, sometimes you'd even get a poster!!! and Atari, Nintendo, Genesis cartridges were all different...thank god I was young enough to enjoy what now we call old school games.
Games you definitely have to check out: Blaster Master Batman Adventure Island 2 Metroid Super Mario Bros 3 Castlevania Kirby's Adventures Mega Man 2 Ninja Gaiden Double Dragon 2 Contra Myke Tyson's Punch out Those are just a few of my personal favorites, ( I left a lot of games out ) as you can see most of these IPs are still being produced that's why a lot of people like me still love and play their NES.
I think the 7800 had the biggest boxes out of all the oldschool 80's consoles. I miss the Huge full color instruction manuals we used to get. Now we're lucky if one page of our tiny manuals is color.
I'm supposed to be studying for my french class right now and my parents thought I was watching the Take Home Tutor cause of the French music in the background.
5200 isn't worth it. 7800 games blow them out of the water anyway. I believe the 7800 has a bigger library as well. 5200 bombed pretty quick. You really only need one console if you want Atari, the 7800.
When Atari went under after Nintendo & Sega crushed them a huge overstock of 7800's with 6 games found their way to Big Lots. They sold for $40.00 each. Needless to say. When I got to the store they were gone. I asked the sales lady if they would get more in & she said the ones they had sold out in 20 minutes ! & they had 200 in stock 0_o But they wouldn't get anymore. :( I was mad depressed.
Maybe I am a nerd, but I kept all my Sierra games packaging (red) and Blizzard (blue), as they look great in the bookshelf. Do not toss away your packaging!
@freesoftz Emulation's still no substitute for the real thing, especially on the NES. Most NES emulators (and NOACs) have tinny sound and graphical inconsistencies when compared with an actual system. Some emu developers have, however, made great efforts toward accurate NES emulation, with Nintendulator springing to mind. Accurate emulation is very important to homebrew developers who intend to put their games on actual carts, without which their games might not run at all!
@seanobi777 Get the original controllers, and then NES to USB adpaters, and so on for all other emulators, then put on vsync and then all will be well.
@seanobi777 yes, because you don't have to pay money. And the graphics are shit on emulators. And you can't attach an original controller properly: you can, but you won't have the whole control of the system you play a game on. And this is just WRONG.
@eklipsegirl emulation has its purpose. It's a great way to get the younger generation into classic gaming. I know tons of people in their late teens, early 20s who started collecting retro gaming consoles because of emulation and that is a good thing. :)
People, keep the box and the manual. They worth more that way. Cart on its own only worth about 25p. If you have the box and the manual it is worth a few pounds.
All Atari Corp. cartridges from 1986 onwards all had open circuit board designs.
I think it was done for money cost cutting purposes.
When Atari games first came out you were talking £30 per game(lot of money in 1980). When Atari Corp. decided to revive the 2600 in 1986 they were selling the games for £10 each. The thing was though that it was very hard to find games for the machine in the late 80s. Only catalogues sold them and they charged double that.
I remember in 1987/88 that there was an electrical shop(that has gone bust since) were selling the 2600 with 5 games for £60(I think) or 1 game for £30.
The game usually bundled with the console was Centipede in the late 80s. Arrrggghhh Combat was much better than Centipede.
The graphics and sound. The gameplay is pretty much the same, I think the 7800 might be better. The 7800 version is more fun and a lot closer to the arcade.
Actually only the graphics, the sound comes from the same sound chip, they gave the option to put a more advanced audio chip inside the cartridges but only 2 games used that.
Hey, can someone tell me if the old 2600 Joysticks work aswell on a 7800?
I'm a child of the NES Era and never had an Atari(well I'm only 20),but I decided to buy one now.But I really don't know if I should start with a 2600 or a 7800.
The 7800 Controllers I see all look kinda strange (Colecovision-like and more NES like(with a Thumpstick though)and I really wanna play with these classic little one-button joysticks you always see with 2600 systems. So if they work with 7800 Id go with that one.
Yes you can, and actually it is recommended over the original 7800 ones because those suck, you can also use Sega Master System and Genesis controllers so you have a wide range of original and 3rd party controllers to use.
One thing I gotta say about the 7800 is how can they disrespect a great game like "Bird Ass" they had these "Joust" labels all over it! WTF is that all about? ;) :D

Hehe, what about the 5200?
I got one, and its surprisingly a great system with great controllers.
Only its controllers are quite possibly the most the unreliable electronics ever invented.
Get the Wico aftermarket controllers if ya wanna play it.
