  • some really good stuff here

  • some great inforamtion here thanks

  • looks like Parkinson's to me

  • @wsyfighter lol

  • Ah. Thanks, BlueCougar.

  • Is she playing harmonies at about 2:40? Sounds like a few descending dyads (sort of like double stops)? I If so, I didn't know Theramin could play more than one note/tone at a time. Anyone know?

  • @silverskid Leon Theremin did work on a polyphonic theremin, (where you could select additional tones with a switch held in your left hand) but abandoned the project. A theremin is strictly monophonic. The "second voice" was probably prerecorded.

  • 46 don't understand POETRY.

  • amazing how much she has emulated the sound that Isao Tomita achieved on his album of DeBussy compositions! Although I believe he used a keyboard on his effort. In fact that sounds a lot like his track in the background? Or is there a pianist accompanying her?!

  • @GrannyTenderstone of course there is a piano in the background.

  • I love these instruments, and they remind me of the theme from Star Trek a lot.

  • NICE!

  • NO SCIENCE WITHOUT THIS GIRL OR HUMAN!

    YOU'RE LITTLE CONFUSED!

LEON THEREMIN BUILD THAT ...AND IT WAS A MAN!

  • Is it just me or is there a second theremin there around 2:35 ? Is that a recording or we just don't see the other thereminist off screen? :)

  • Oh God! This sounds so amazingly beautiful !

  • Is it only me that thinks of Snow whites voice? xD if you look up " snow white a smile and a song" haha

  • EARGASM

  • Must be hard to play. Like a harp with invisible strings.

    Props.

  • Without words! :O

  • I've only heard of this instrument when I was in school I guess ... First time I've seen it being played O_O

WOW ... simply WOOOOW !!! Thanks so much for uploading this :) It's BEAUTIFUL !!! :)

  • So relaxing...

  • wait...what the fuck?

  • what an excellent performance!

  • simply wonderful. Thanks for posting this !

  • wat's that thing calld anyway

  • @MrDaimed The instrument she's playing is called a Theremin.

  • @SypherDubstep Oh yes, because they pose the question of 'what Justin Bieber is' at the end of the video. Oh wait, no they don't. Your comment is irrelevant. So, for that matter is Justin Bieber. What exactly about this video compelled you to share your feelings on the matter?

  • creepy

  • breath-taking Thank You God Bless

  • Just awesome...

  • Does the theremin sound like a soprano doing 'woo' sounds to anyone else?

  • @Alfred0047 Yes indeed. Have a listen to, "The Harvard Pops Plays the Spellbound Concerto — Theremin Only" where its even more apparrent.

  • @Alfred0047 Like most electric instruments, you can make it sounds however you want.

  • This is pretty awesome,

  • Can you get calluses from this?

  • @paulj0557 First of all, it's spelled "callouses." How the hell could you get callouses if you don't touch the machine?

  • @paulj0557 Hell, I did a spell check for a word i never spell- I picked the wrong one & they sound the same. Who knew. and it is a joke- of course you can't get sores on your fingers from playing energy fields. It's a joke toward all of the wimps that quit playing guitar because they couldn't handle the pain.

  • I SWEAR, she's going to get laid by an alien someday.

  • berbat efektler, berbat bir kostüm, saçma sapan bir anlayış.güzelim müziği böylesine harika bir enstrumanla nasıl berbat etmiş.pis çalıyor ayrıca..

  • Comment removed

  • And you thought playing a trombone was hard.

  • Where the hell does the sound come out of the theremin?

  • @MsKTMvalley DUH!! from a speaker.

  • @RETRO714 Thank you for the kind and gentle reply, that's what I love most about Youtube users here.

  • @MsKTMvalley A loudspeaker. Some have them built into the cabinet, some have them as external accessories, and some are simply wired to the stage monitoring system and/or PA system. This is truly an outstanding theremin performance by the grandneice of Leon Theremin.

  • Русские рарзработали, самые умные люди на земле

  • beautiful sound, it´s like dreaming, beautiful.

  • the theremin and her playing is beautiful. unfortunately the other voices, especially the piano with the shitty reverb and the other 80s-crap sounds horrible. the theremin has a nice timeless sound.

  • WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE

  • @agsiar What hath science wrought?

    would be much better.

  • @agsiar

Science created the piano. Which this gorgeous piece of music was written on in the first place ;)

  • @m00nshine2004 Science doesn't create, science discovers. Science may have discovered the principles of harmonics etc., knowledge which allowed the piano to be made, but science didn't create the piano. An inventor created the piano, who may or may not have had any understanding of the scientific method that lay behind the knowledge he had been given.

  • @johnsmithbsc

Science creates all the time. Or rather Scientists do if you want to play semantic chess with me. For instance, rocket scientists research, design and build rockets. Just as Léon Theremin was a 'Russian scientist' Quoted from Britannica online.

  • what the fuck is that?

is she stringing air, or what?

    I see NOTHING

  • @ericalovesyouu3 it's an electronic instrument; it works with antennas

that sense the position of her hands and transforms that into sound.

  • @ericalovesyouu3

The Theremin is an electronic musical instrument that is played without touching it. On the left side she controls the volume and on the right she controls the pitch. The device reacts stored electric charge (like the kind we have in our bodies).

  • This is stunning, check out all the articulation styles she's getting from her left hand!! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting!

  • creepy.

  • WoW! the kinekt grandfather!

  • It sounds so beautiful, but it is so weird to look at it!

  • Whoaw!! It's amazing!

  • it's still the future. i love this.

  • Was she doing the chordal passages by herself or was her sounded paired with another instrument? In particular, when there is that descending passage of thirds at 2:38, was she making the intervals? I thought this sounded amazing. This piece really sounds beautiful on the theremin.

  • Not a fan of her phrasing at all

  • jim moginie the former guitarist for midnight oil played the theremin for his band the break tonight was bloody awesome

  • Shamazing!

  • The grandniece of Léon Theremin ( Lev Sergejewitsch Termen (1896–1993) the inventor of the Theremin)

  • why is this theremin so tall??? maybe its tthe camera angle. ?

  • Brilliant... A beautiful instrument if played correctly, yet also able to churn out some incredible "rock-esque" sounds and pieces if run through a Guitar effects board...

    A truly versatile instrument.

  • ive never even seen this instrument in my LIFE. its pretty amazing though :)

  • Omg I WANT ONE!! The most amazing thing Ive ever seen in my life!<3

  • wow, great stuff, first ive ever heard of a theremin

  • Wow, Lydia was super hot back in the day.

  • I don't understand....what is she doing or playing? o.O

  • @sunsetglow702 It's a theremin. You can look it up on wikipedia. It's played without touching it.

  • @BlueCougar Wow, "you can look it up o Wikipedia" wow--what an amazing mind you have!

  • you could swear this is an episode of star trek she has the costume for it too

  • parkinson = good vibrato

  • @axelcampeon parkinson it's not a joke genius! It's a fuckin desease!!

  • i dont like that the piano is playing, she should have done it without the piano in the background:(

  • Wow that looks very great its like magic.

  • i think it is electrical / wave force. Amazing to watch.Does it rely only on muscle memory, or are there any guides, (like sheet music) as to where and how to move the hands? Think I'll go watch Leon to find out.

Not visually very exciting, though, IMHO

  • @TheRebasMom

Sure you can use sheet music for playing the theremin. Some people are able to sing at sight, and the vocal chords don't give any visual feedback. ;)

  • i think it is electrical / wave force. Amazing to watch.Does it rely only on muscle memory, or are there any guides, (like sheet music) as to where and how to move the hands?

  • iI'll bet she gives a great handjob!

  • @RETRO714 Proximity Sensor Dick FTW!

  • 1:56 and 2:40 How can she do it with harmonies?? I thought you'd have to have 2 people to do that!

  • @aml686 I don't get it.. Maybe she switches to some kind of harmony mode at 1:41...but I can't explain the polyphonic parts :(

    Guess it's just playback :P :D :D

  • How did she play harmony????

  • Not for fools

  • sounds like gizmo from the movie "Gremlins"

  • Lydia Kavina is the grand-niece of the later inventor, Leo Sergeyvich Thermin. She has performed in the soundtrack of 'Ed Wood'. Music by Howard Shore.

  • i hate the theremin

  • @ihateEffexor Yes, we've read your same blog over and over and over.

  • @jslasher1 Shit on the theremin!

  • @ihateEffexor Shits on you because your account was closed! Thats what happens when you diss the theremin!

  • @ihateEffexor But don't touch it :)

  • MAJESTIC and WONDERFUL:*****

    Aurora

  • as impressive the instrument is I find its sound utterly unappealing.

  • Luke, I am your father!

  • i don't get it

  • that's wasup

  • she's granddaughter of Termenvox inventor Leo Termen

  • but dancing to it!

  • Clara Rockmore is smilling...

  • @smokndave

they both have the same teacher

  • nice interpretation of the new generation of theremin players/lovers of this simple but difficult instrument..

  • omygosh what a beast..

  • hows she doing that?????

  • haha even her cloth comes from outer space ;D

loving this instrument , it sounds beautiful and magical !

  • thats kinda freaky. looks like she's being possessed or something.

  • The Theremin usually sounds like crappy noise, unless it's played correctly.

I think she's the best I've seen. Yes, even better than Clara Rockmore.

  • such a pain in the ass to play correctly probably...

  • that is insane?!

  • The entire vid is simply haunting and( one of my favorite go- to vids)...but that last note is bliss! Divine!

  • She is The inventor's niece. Mr. Theremin

  • @morningbenders Grandniece

  • IMagine if you woke up in the middle of the night and were faced with this. The spooky womans hands , the music of angels , birds somehow chirping . Orange smoke and all too many other things going on. I would flee.

  • HOW DOES SHE DO THIS? I am spellbound....

  • @csereix---Like#1104...Amazing--

Thank you csereix for all your great shares...

Yes good question--How does she do this???

  • say she sucks all you like, this woman was taught by the guy who invented the theremin, so it may sound "off" but realize that the device has it's limitations, and every minute change in position means a change in sound. Try holding your arm in the air perfectly still - it can't be done. That's why there are people who play by holding the antenna.

  • @Azmodawn She was the grand niece of Leon Theremin. Can't have a better teacher than that.

  • @Boudosaved that's what I said isn't it? :)

  • @Azmodawn she is the greatest. i love this,. what a magic instrument! the future! from the past! thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • @leo63de hey u sound mean, but whats worse is that ur acting smart.....theres no glass u tool, its a dopplet affect from 2 antenas that she manipulates tone with her right hand and volume with her left, please try to be nice to others

  • Beautiful

  • @MuSixramper she plays better than you ever will

  • @FlockaLorenzzz i'm not thereminist..i'm pianist and composer.. i respect your opinion, but for me she play so bad.

  • however..I love the song.

  • @MuSixramper I'm curious, who have you seen that's better? I think she's probably the best "player" i've ever heard.

  • @sgtpepper1138 Clara Rockmore is the greatest thereminist of the history of course...you can see her videos searching her name at youtube...listen to the song the "The Swan"!!!

  • @sgtpepper1138 , of course she would be the best player, because she is the grandniece of theremin's inventor, Leon Theremin, and he himself began to teach her when she was 9 years old ))

  • @MuSixramper "This Lady Lydia Kavina" is a Relative to Leon Termen, the inventor of the instrument. She studied playing from no one else but himself.

  • I SWEAR, she's going to get laid by an alien someday.

  • @SeaTofu she has to be an alien with skills like that

  • @SeaTofu Or a human.

  • @SeaTofu roflmfao

  • @SeaTofu you just made me laugh so freakin' hard :'D

  • @SeaTofu eheheheheheheheh so funny!

  • @SeaTofu ahahahah xD

  • @SeaTofu LMAO I know the sound of the instrument makes me think of aliens xD

  • @SeaTofu Okay, watch "Species II" and come back to this comment.

  • @Snakemast345 hahaha yep i've seen that movie before!

  • Cool! And very beautiful. Sounds both a bit scary and so beautiful that your eyes are filled with tears.

  • The most difficult instrument to master. What a pro.

  • This is beautiful.

  • Why is it impossible to make commentaries? I get "Error, try again"!

  • WITCHCRAFT!!!

  • is there a theremin for lefties? i mean with the antenna at the other side?

  • @odingr, I believe that many theremins can be set up for right or left hand.

  • why not play guitar instead? :P

  • @odingr Probably because how many guitar players do you see everyday, now how many theremin players do you see everyday? not many i'm guessing. it's just a unique instrument that not many people play.

  • @pontecanis Yes, I know

  • @rubberrev0lver Idiot?

  • absolutely superbe !!!

  • If you want to hear something that isn't quite this interesting and strange, check out "Ezz-Rah, Moy-Izz-May" on my channel. This is really something, though. Goddamn. Look at her go. Damn.

  • Mogwi?

  • Amazing !!!

  • Absolutely nice :)

  • @yorkandpomona HAHAHAHAHAHAHA xD xD xD yeahhhh

  • I want one of these so bad!!!

  • I WANT A THEREMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ohh soo beautiful!! I love Lydia - both to look at her and to listen to her sensitive and well tuned playing on the theremin. I think she is the best in the world now, not to forget Peter Pringle of course.

  • @adonis1940 She is licensed expert

  • @Sortsylic

Hi Vlad! Well, I have yet listened and downloaded a lot of theremin clips with Lydia Kavina. I don´t know what kind of licencing she has, but she is a very skillful and cute musician. I also like listen to Peter Pringle, Thomas Grillo, Carolina Eyck and Clara Rockmore playing theremin. I think it is a such fascinating instrument.

  • @adonis1940 Yes theremin is very delicate instrument

P.S. Vlad is not the Vladimir as many eur/usa thinks. The short version of Vladimir is Vova :)

  • @Sortsylic

Yes, I noted that theremin playing demands very accurate finger movements in order to produce clean notes. I myself play the piano, so I feel notes very good. I would like to exercise on a theremin. Excuse me for Vlad! I didn´t know the diminutive form Vova for Vladimir. I´m a swede, my wife is polish. I know Poland for 30 years and I speak polish since years. They have also diminutive forms for forenames.

  • @adonis1940 No problem. I am playing a guitar for two years, I can hear all the notes by ear too and theremin is very emm...senseful instrument. I think swadians and polands and russians (real, not all of these "golden" youngsters) are brothers for ages. There is no reason for such little mistakes.

P.S. Sorry, if anything is bad about me, I am only 16 years old.

  • @Sortsylic WHY...YES OF COURSE-----YOU POMPOUS ASS
