It is always way too easy to blame the goalie and not look at what is going on around him. I unfortunately have all 4 of those games on tape. There were SO many odd man breaks and breakaways on the Flyers goalies in that series. The Wings were just a great team that year firing on all cylinders.
How can you possibly say that? In 95-96 he lead the league in GAA wit a 2.17 and an amazing SP of .913. Brodeur's SP that year was .911!
Then in 97-98 he also recorded a GAA of 2.17 and a SP of .911. That is what you call "stopping the puck".
Not sure how you judge "stopping the puck" but you don't find yourself #25 on the all times wins list with a career GAA of 2.98 and SP of .895 in 608 games by not stopping the puck.
What I meant was Hextall had a way of giving up the softest goals at the worst times. You have to admit Anderson in game 7 was one he should've stopped(but he was amazing in that game). Lemieux in 95, Yzerman in 97. IDK, I love Hextall but it always seemed he did that he let in back breaking goals at the worst of moments
I am who looks at the big picture and not just one particular goal.
Game 7: The team mustered only 4 shots in the 2nd per and 2 in the 3rd while Hextall made 40 saves in the game after playing the longest season in history. They were not coming back in that game and I do not fault him for that goal.
Lemieux?: That one probably should have been stopped, but again, they was seriously outplayed in that game and if it not for Hextall's play they would not have even been in it at that point.
97? That whole team disappeared in front of him in that series. They were out played and out matched and that Flyer team had 0 heart. No Hextall did not play great in that series but the team in front of him was even worse as their goal production dropped by half from the previous 3 series. Not to mention the way the organization had been treating a guy who lead the league in GAA the previous year. In the grand scheme of things that goal was hardly the problem in the series. Just my 2 cents!
I agree with you Frozintoe, No doubt his best year was his first year, he was never the same after that, he couldnt stop a watermelon. As for handling the puck, he invented it, perfected it, and scored. Twice. Hextall will be one of the best Flyers goaltenders, but nothing more then that.
Hextall set the bar so high his rookie year that is would be difficult for ANY goalie to play like that on a consistent level. To say that he "couldn't stop a watermelon" is just wrong. Look at his numbers. Again, he lead the league in GAA in 95-96 with a 2.17 and had the same number the following year. That means he was stopping an awful lot of "watermelons". Hextall is currently #25 on the all time wins list with a better WP than many above him. He was certainly one of the best of his era.
Yes, we all feel much better knowing that now. 20 years later it is still a cheap shot elbow and Hexy did right to kick his ass! Good thing is when he is finally done playing he can check himself right into a nursing home!
Chelios is a scumbag and a cheapshot pussy who is damn lucky Hexy didn't fuck him up worse than he did! Old fossil fuck should fucking retire already! Cocksucker!
i was at the tribute game night and alot of grown men and i shed a tear watching this and hearing him speak. he should be in the hall of fame. thanks hexy. your moneys no good in the del.valley. ever. its on us.
FUCK HEXTAL MAN YO"U"R T"HE DAMN BEST HEXTALL HEX STANDS TALL MY UNCLE KNOWS YOUR COUSIN HEXTALL He PLAYS GOLF IN MICHIGAN WITH MY UNCLE!!! ITS AWESOME hope i get to meet u some day hextall
You don't just remember that Hexy played, you remember how he played. He had more heart, competitive spirit & passion in his little finger than most had in their whole body - maybe his achilles heel. Above all, he was a character. Note: 1. 29 W for the Nords = play-off berth; 2. Isles -needed max pts in their last 30g, Al Arbour said he was the only reason they made the play-offs; 4. Could have easily surpassed 300 W, but took a job inside the team he loved - loyalty.
Great comment and points. The wins is a very good point. For instance, people hold Mike Richter in fairly high regard and rightfully so. What they may not know is that Hextall is right behind him at #23 on the all time wins list (Richter #22) but the telling stat is that Hextall only had 5 less wins in 58 less games played (Hextall-296 in 608 GP / Richter 301 in 666 GP). People FAR too often forget his accomplishments because they focus on all his other antics and personal feelings for him.
They should put Ron Hextall in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was one of the very best ever. The Flyers had a ton of glory with him in nets. The goals he scored, the fights, Hex did everything except win the Cup. Hey Dave, do you know if Hex ever had a fight with Messier? If not, who would win? Hex? LOL
I could not agree more! The guy may not have been the best goalie ever to play, but he certainly has VERY good numbers, he certainly made an impact & changed the game, not to mention making NHL history twice!
No, to my memory he never fought Messier. I would imagine even HE would have had too much respect for him. But although Messier was a very tough player he certainly was not a "fighter". Who would win? I don't know but you ALWAYS have to fear the crazy one. Hextall was certainly that.
Hextall was not a great goalie... He was a great hockey player who happened to play goal. There is no goalie in the history of the game that played the position like he did. The flyers during his run never had a great defense... he cleared the puck some games more often than the rest of the team combined.
Also, Hexy is the only player that Gretzky, Mario Lemeaux, and Jagr all said at one point they would rather face any other goal tender 1v 1 with the game on the line.
when it came to crunch time he stunk up the ice letting in the most garbage goals ever. he tried to become a fan favorite by dropping his gloves but he usually hit the ice before his gloves did. fun to watch but wouldn't want him on my team. he was a clown!
Clown hu? Lets see. Career Stats: 2.98 GAA, .895 SP, 2 Goals scored, Conn Smythe on the losing team, Vezina Trophy, Led the league in GAA in 96, 24th all time in Wins (Richter is 23rd with only 1 more having played in 58 MORE games), 2 time NHL all star, 9 playoff appearances in 13 years and more wins as a Flyer goalie than Bernie Parent in less games played.
You seem like a Devils fan, to top all that all who does Brodeur name as one of his idols growing up? Ron Hextall! "Clown"? Right!
and when it came to crunch time he folded. he fit in philly for one reason. he threw his gloves down quick. he wasn't a goalie that would come through when needed.
Oh yea how did he do in 87 when he won the MVP as the losing goaltender? When did he fold there? No my niaeve friend he fit in philly because he won a LOT of games. The fighting was just a very entertaining bonus. If all he did was fight and did not win he would not have stuck around so long.
Again, Bernie Parent is a NHL hall of fame goaltender and Hextall has MORE WINS and PLENTY of them were big games. 93 PO Wins! THAT is why he fit in Philly. There is nothing you can do to twist that!
Sorry, but he did not score three goals. He scored only two. One (his first) against the Bruins on 12/8/87 and one in the playoffs against the Caps on 4/11/89. That is all. If you think he scored a third in his NHL career please let me know when and where and against who!
You know I hear you and think what you say is correct for the most part. But you would think they would remember what he did in '87 and realize that there are exceptions. He did really deserve one that year doing all that one goalie could do in that series to win it. He certainly did more to win it than Fuhr did. Not to knock Fuhr's performance but he just did not have to face as many shots or carry his team as Hextall did. He does deserve some consideration!
hey DaveTV2, Hextall would have won no duh, BECAUSE Messier's a dick for what he did to Trevor Linden AND well, Hextall's just better. In fact if he had been a centre or something(Hextall) he would have been as good as anyone.
I am not sure I am following any of that. What does Hextall winning have anything to do with Trevor Linden and Messier? After all 87 was the closest Hextall got where I said he should have won the Cup and although Messier was in that series Trevor Linden was not.
Moreover I do not even remember what Messier did. Can you refresh my memory? I never knew Messier to be a dirty player or a "dick" so I am curious if there is something I missed.
Hey sorry about bringing Messier and Linden in this bout I just got interrested in Messier vs. Hextall and I just kinda got carried away with my Canucks stuff. Oh yeah, if yr wondering about the Messier-Linden incident (I used to like Messier before but after that cheapshot I lost all my respect for him) just type in "HE WILL PLAY!" in the Youtube address bar and then click on the first result. Oh, be sure to check out the comments before you watch a different vid or something. Btw, Hextall pwns
I did a search for that but the first thing in the list has something to do with Virginia Tech. Please send me a link if you can.
That said, no matter what it was. Mark Messier was one of the best players and maybe THE best leader the game has ever seen. I can't imagine any one incident that could make anyone "lose all respect for him". If it was indeed a cheap shot, he certainly did not make a habit of it and you can't let one loss of control trump everything else he brought to the game.
Yo I just couldn't bear seeing Linden being high- sticked (more really slashed) in the face after being elbowed and was crawling towards the bench. Il give you the URL later. Thanks.
Did you watch the "Ron Hextall Career Highlights Music Video" on the "GenerationXFiles" YouTube page? That will make you heart race even faster! That one is mine creation as well. Just did not have this page active when I posted it there. I would love to move it here but would lose all my votes, views and such.
I used to serve at the olive garden across the street from the flyers practice facility. He and Paul Holmgren put up with some of my annoying co workers and tipped well too.
This guy was my hero growing up and I named my boy Hextall D.Olson after him,in 2004 in St Paul Minnesota at the WCHA college hockey tournament I met him and he signed my boys picture and the best part was when he called me nuts for naming my boy after him that was Awesome.......glad to see they finally retired him into the pumpkin patch in Philadelphia
The first one is "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" by U2 from the album "Achtung Baby". The second one is "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" by AC/DC from the album Highway to Hell.
Hextall is the reason i became a goalie. I was seven his rookie year. He might not be the greatest of all time, but who ever is, hexy could kick there ass
Personally speaking I think Brodeur is the "greatest of all time". Just a notch above Roy in my opinion. But Hexy by FAR is my all time favorite and probably the most COMPLETE goalie ever to play. He did it all: Stopping the puck, scoring goals, acting as a 3rd defenseman with his skating & passing ability, enforcer to his OWN area and defending his teammates, he even body checked his opponents, He CERTAINLY got in their heads and under their skin like no other, mostly he was damn entertaining!
Why I got thumbed down for saying I think Patrick Roy could go toe-to-toe with Hextall, I don't know. Especially with how he wrecked his opponents in fights.
Anyways, I just look at Roy in the playoffs, he has what, 3 Conn Smythes in 4 Cup wins to Brodeur's 0?
He got more wins on overall weaker teams and systems over the years than Brodeur as well.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he win in the head to head match-ups as well against Brodeur in the playoffs?
For the record, I did not give you a thumbs down. Actually I will give you an up! But if you think Roy could have hung in a fight with Hextall you are nuts. I did not realize that was what you were saying. No way. Hextall had an advantage... we was nuts! He would have killed him.
Brodeur? Again that is just MY opinion. I can see your argument as well. Cont.
Yes, I believe Broduer has played on a team with a great system. But I also think things (team, coaches, rules) have continued to change around him and they are still ALWAYS competitive and consistent and I think he has MUCH to do with that. Especially in today's NHL. I think they are both VERY close. Brodeur has been nothing but consistent in his career and do not think on can say that it was all just the system.
I would definitely say you missed out on something if you did not get to see him play. SOOO entertaining to watch. As far as him vs. Roy goes in a fight. All I can say is that when Hextall jumped Chellios he had every opportunity to go after him. Roy had already broken the rules of "leaving the crease during an altercation" by skating out to below the blue line. But all he did was wait till Hextall was being forced off the ice by the refs to talk shit from across the rink. VERY wimpy!
Roy definitely wins hans down as far as stopping the puck goes though.
If you have not seen it yet, check out the "Ron Hextall Career Highlights Music Video" on the "GenerationXFiles" YouTube channel. That is actually my page as well. I created that video. VERY entertaining stuff if you like a nice mix of hockey and fighting.
I miss him to as a ranger fan, I loved when the rangers trashed him as an islander in 94, gave up 23 goals in four games for the isles when we swept em, I miss the gold old Hextall chants throughout the garden, overall he had a good career though but as a ranger fan the hextall chants will always be remembered
That is really funny because your facts are NOT correct. A. HE did NOT give up 23 goals. B. HE did not play in all four games. No, he did not play well in that series but look at that Islander team in front of him! The Rangers were CLEARLY a better team from top to bottom. Hextall's play down the stretch was the ONLY reason they were even in the playoffs. Next time, if you are going to try to trash him make sure you have your facts straight. Otherwise you just make yourself look stupid!
By the way just to continue refreshing your memory the Iles scored a TOTAL of 3 whole goals in that series being shut out TWICE in the first 2 games. It is CLEAR that Islander team had problems beyond that of Ron Hextall. As I said, no he did not play well but THAT fact is a clear indication of what was happening in front of him. Remember the Goalie is only as good as the team in front of him! Either way there is no way you can simply point at him for that series so give it a rest!
Oh sorry I forgot about Jamie Mclennan, Hextall started most of those games,it really didnt matter. Islander team in front of him may have been bad, but its no excuse for playing that poorly, bc worse goalies have played better behind worse teams, and overall I did say in the earlier post he had a good career.
Well no, it does not excuse it completely but is sure as hell is a HUGE factor. Even the best goalie in the world can only do so much if they are being hung out to dry game after game after game and getting NO offensive support. It is ignorant and shows complete personal bias towards one player to lay the loss of a series where the TEAM scored a measely 3 goals at the feet of the goalie or ANY one player. The TEAM sucked! Offensively AND Defensively. THAT is why they lost. NOT only Hextall
It is also funny that you would choose the words "it really didnt matter" after mentioning Mclennan because you are so right. Game 1 Hextall 6-0 Loss, Game 2 Mclennan 6-0 loss. See a pattern here? It did not matter WHO was in net the results were going to be the same with THAT team in front of whoever was in net. Then after showing Hextall they have NO confidence in him and being outscored 12-0 they try to go back to him in game 3 at that point it is clearly over. Juggling goalies NEVER works!

Great video, got goosebumps. I forgot how awesome Hex was. Hockey needs more character players like Hex.
Some goalies give up softies, ie. Grant Fuhr, but then get stronger and stronger as the game progresses. Hex was one of my favorites. Awesome.

Thanks for the comment!

Hextall is the reason i became a goalie. I was seven his rookie year. He might not be the greatest of all time, but who ever is, hexy could kick there ass
thealbinoryno1313 3 years ago 2
Greatest all time? I'd say Patrick Roy. I think Roy stands a chance actually, hahah.
BooBooMcBad 3 years ago
Personally speaking I think Brodeur is the "greatest of all time". Just a notch above Roy in my opinion. But Hexy by FAR is my all time favorite and probably the most COMPLETE goalie ever to play. He did it all: Stopping the puck, scoring goals, acting as a 3rd defenseman with his skating & passing ability, enforcer to his OWN area and defending his teammates, he even body checked his opponents, He CERTAINLY got in their heads and under their skin like no other, mostly he was damn entertaining!
DaveTV2 3 years ago
Why I got thumbed down for saying I think Patrick Roy could go toe-to-toe with Hextall, I don't know. Especially with how he wrecked his opponents in fights.
Anyways, I just look at Roy in the playoffs, he has what, 3 Conn Smythes in 4 Cup wins to Brodeur's 0?
He got more wins on overall weaker teams and systems over the years than Brodeur as well.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he win in the head to head match-ups as well against Brodeur in the playoffs?
BooBooMcBad 3 years ago
For the record, I did not give you a thumbs down. Actually I will give you an up! But if you think Roy could have hung in a fight with Hextall you are nuts. I did not realize that was what you were saying. No way. Hextall had an advantage... we was nuts! He would have killed him.
Brodeur? Again that is just MY opinion. I can see your argument as well. Cont.
DaveTV2 3 years ago
Yes, I believe Broduer has played on a team with a great system. But I also think things (team, coaches, rules) have continued to change around him and they are still ALWAYS competitive and consistent and I think he has MUCH to do with that. Especially in today's NHL. I think they are both VERY close. Brodeur has been nothing but consistent in his career and do not think on can say that it was all just the system.
DaveTV2 3 years ago
No, definitely not all the system.
Maybe it's because I didn't watch Hextall at all though. I'm 17 myself so.
BooBooMcBad 3 years ago
I would definitely say you missed out on something if you did not get to see him play. SOOO entertaining to watch. As far as him vs. Roy goes in a fight. All I can say is that when Hextall jumped Chellios he had every opportunity to go after him. Roy had already broken the rules of "leaving the crease during an altercation" by skating out to below the blue line. But all he did was wait till Hextall was being forced off the ice by the refs to talk shit from across the rink. VERY wimpy!
DaveTV2 3 years ago
Roy definitely wins hans down as far as stopping the puck goes though.
If you have not seen it yet, check out the "Ron Hextall Career Highlights Music Video" on the "GenerationXFiles" YouTube channel. That is actually my page as well. I created that video. VERY entertaining stuff if you like a nice mix of hockey and fighting.

I miss him to as a ranger fan, I loved when the rangers trashed him as an islander in 94, gave up 23 goals in four games for the isles when we swept em, I miss the gold old Hextall chants throughout the garden, overall he had a good career though but as a ranger fan the hextall chants will always be remembered
procktit 4 years ago
That is really funny because your facts are NOT correct. A. HE did NOT give up 23 goals. B. HE did not play in all four games. No, he did not play well in that series but look at that Islander team in front of him! The Rangers were CLEARLY a better team from top to bottom. Hextall's play down the stretch was the ONLY reason they were even in the playoffs. Next time, if you are going to try to trash him make sure you have your facts straight. Otherwise you just make yourself look stupid!
GenerationXFiles 4 years ago
By the way just to continue refreshing your memory the Iles scored a TOTAL of 3 whole goals in that series being shut out TWICE in the first 2 games. It is CLEAR that Islander team had problems beyond that of Ron Hextall. As I said, no he did not play well but THAT fact is a clear indication of what was happening in front of him. Remember the Goalie is only as good as the team in front of him! Either way there is no way you can simply point at him for that series so give it a rest!
GenerationXFiles 4 years ago
Oh sorry I forgot about Jamie Mclennan, Hextall started most of those games,it really didnt matter. Islander team in front of him may have been bad, but its no excuse for playing that poorly, bc worse goalies have played better behind worse teams, and overall I did say in the earlier post he had a good career.
procktit 4 years ago
Well no, it does not excuse it completely but is sure as hell is a HUGE factor. Even the best goalie in the world can only do so much if they are being hung out to dry game after game after game and getting NO offensive support. It is ignorant and shows complete personal bias towards one player to lay the loss of a series where the TEAM scored a measely 3 goals at the feet of the goalie or ANY one player. The TEAM sucked! Offensively AND Defensively. THAT is why they lost. NOT only Hextall
GenerationXFiles 4 years ago
It is also funny that you would choose the words "it really didnt matter" after mentioning Mclennan because you are so right. Game 1 Hextall 6-0 Loss, Game 2 Mclennan 6-0 loss. See a pattern here? It did not matter WHO was in net the results were going to be the same with THAT team in front of whoever was in net. Then after showing Hextall they have NO confidence in him and being outscored 12-0 they try to go back to him in game 3 at that point it is clearly over. Juggling goalies NEVER works!
