@Palomablanca1978 . Agree that this is brilliant. Genesis was forced to change post Peter. Credit where credit is due. Collins grabbed hold and ran with it. Have you ever heard of Brand X, Collins' jazz fusion band. In addition, to each their own, but seriously have you really taken the time to listen to Peter's solo work. OMG
OMG........PHENOMINAL!!!!! Genesis...an indelable mark of Classic musical history, I cant help but be intregued by the collaberative process that obviously took place between all of these supurb musicians.....saw them live many times,,,only a couple times with Gabrial, and all though all the shows were spectacular...the ones with Gabrial were without question...special. This is why music back then was almost religious,,,... where has the avantgard creativity faded too.....
When someone said the greatest drummers in classic rock were Kieth Moon, John Bonham and Carl Palmer, they forgot to add Phil Collins to the list. I never new Phil could kick ass on the drums like that. Wow!
@mrdudelz Phil's a beast, I totally agree. But do people really put Carl Palmer to that height? He's good, but rarely rises to great. I'd have Bruford at least over him any day.
@Fakename70 True, and "A Trick of the Tail" was a great album, but though he said at the time "What was i doing?" Peter Gabriel's departure, spelled an end to an ethos.
Finally...like seemingly...in one oftheir songs..."I walked stranger roads than this one..." Never was there anything that came that close to the Absolute Genuine Genesis!
@labora4best ...you,my friend is a listener.....not a player..hence your comments are fodder at best ,and blah de blah........cant be be arsed , because you will hear and wont LISTEN.... and cant see what you cant hear,,,and....cant smell the ...MUSIC....end of.
The chords starting at 7:57 make the hairs on the back of my arms and neck stand on end and it builds up to a climax at 8:25 when the bright chords come in again. Great stuff.
Absolute full agreement. Steve Hackett's playing and tapping took Genesis to an area of high power, from their firm roots in pastel shaded arty guitaring
have you checked out "ace of wands" off of his "voyage of the acolyte" album? Dude, he wrecks shop on that. P.S. I watch this video 10 times a day. I am 25 and in a progressive rock band under the teachings of Genesis, Yes, ELP, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, and Steve Vai. We are called Arcane Alchemy. Check us out too if you want for something new and not the same crap. Thanks, and I agree completely.
Genesis: Old Testament (Peter Gabriel). Genesis: New Testament (Phil Collins).

@martock36 I agree. Although I love Peter Grabriel IN Genesis, his solo work is atrocious. God I hate it, just like post-1977 Genesis.

Say what you like about Phil's later exploits but his work at this time was superb....
as was the whole band.....

@Pentalpha5
Agreed. Collins was actually quite a highly-regarded drummer when he took over the vocals after Gabriel left.

Their magnum opus...FOXTROT!
Masterpiece of theatre art music. Unmatched for scope, orchestration, musicianship and imagination.

Where did you get this? I would of killed for this in the 80s.
blabbermouth777 3 years ago
Yay Gabriel! Hit the notes and kept up the strength in the vocals at the very end!
mailbox827 3 years ago
Steve was superb, and never got the recognition he deserved when Genesis "got popular" in the 80s.
Us real fans know though.
Any talk of Genesis reunions that don't factor in Steve are a waste of time IMHO
