I read somewhere that Mike McShane gradually stopped appearing in WL in protest to Tony Slattery's dismissal when the latter started being 'unreliable" because of his mental breakdown.

Tony got addicted to cocaine, which in turn made him "unreliable," he was also drinking a lot. He is also bipolar, and suffered mental breakdowns in the 90'.

@Lizzie2night I heard that story too. I had also heard a rumor that Mike's gradual dissapearance from the show was due to producers wanting him to lose weight to look more "visually appealing" and he protested *that* by appearing less.
